阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。

I used to be the silent type of person before my senior year in high school. But one thing that I have brought with me all the time is my sense of independence. I didn’t like others seeing the real me, thinking that they’d only judge what I had done and what I was doing critically. I didn’t want to get hurt. Maybe I was overly cautious. But more than that, I wanted to prove to those people who looked down on me that I could do things on my own.

But then, what happened in my senior year in high school changed everything. Being the President of a newly-founded club, a secretary of another one, an assistant of a laboratory and a student in the top section, I felt extremely tired sometimes. And what I finally got was a one-week hospitalization later due to a physical breakdown.

My mistake during that time was that I refused help from my members. I wasn’t tyrannical(专横的) in my term, but my motto “As long as you can do it, do it” made me feel more sleep as soon as I hit the bed, I didn’t say anything. And that was the roof of my physical breakdown.

However, when I got back to school, I saw my members doing their jobs successfully—not relying on me in many ways. And somehow, it made me realize the importance of cooperating with others. I learned that sometimes, I really couldn't make it on my own.

1. What was the author like before his senior year in high school?(no more than 5 words)
2. Why didn’t the author want others to see the real him?(no more than 15 words)
3. What does the underlined words refer to in Paragraph 3?(no more than 15 words)
4. What did the author find when he got back to school?(no more than 10 words)
5. What can you learn from the author’s story? Express it in your own words.(no more than 20 words)

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。作者年少时立志长大帮助遭受痛苦的孩子们。长大作者兑现诺言做慈善工作,并号召人们:做力所能及的事来帮助周围的人。

【推荐1】When I was five or six years old, I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself, “When I grow up, when I can get rich, I will save kids all over the world.”

At 17, I started my career here in America, and at the age of 18, I started my first charity organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia(白血病), and whose story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to my grandmother who lost her battle against cancer in 2012. And her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation(CLF). We’re all humans. And we all just want a chance: a chance of life, a chance of education, a chance of a future, really. And at the CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.

People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is that you don’t have to be rich to help others. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t even have to be college-educated. But it can start with your neighbor, the person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, and the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a decision to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother used to say, “If you’ve got a dollar, there’s plenty to share.”

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了一艘轮船向印度启航,在经历了暴风雨后终于找到陆地的故事。

【推荐2】Finally, in March of 1703, the Adventure set sail for India. The winds were good until we got near Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa. Then a strong wind began to blow. We were trapped in the wind for twenty days. After many hours, the wind finally stopped and the sea became quieter. The storm had blown the Adventure hundreds of kilometers to the east.

“Where are we?” I asked the captain.

“I can’t tell for sure.” He said, “we are running out of water. We must reach land soon to fill our water barrels (桶).” Many days passed and we saw nothing but the sea. One morning, before everyone died of thirst, a sailor cried out, “Land!” Everyone on the ship was silent for a second. And quickly the ship sailed closer to the land. The sailors suddenly became turnultuous and all cheered.

“You men,” said the captain to the sailors, “take the rowboats and go. Fill the water barrels with fresh water.”

“Captain,” I said, “may I go with them to take a look at this place?”

“Of course,” he replied. “You can tell me later what it is like.”

When the rowboats reached the coast, one of the sailors said, “we will have to walk along the coast to look for fresh water.”

“I’m going to take a little walk,” I told them. “I will meet you back here in an hour.”

I walked about a kilometer, enjoying being on land again. Then I turned and walked back to meet the sailors.

When I arrived on the beach, the sailors were not there. They were in the rowboats, rowing as fast as they could toward the Adventure. I was going to shout out to them when I saw a very huge man walking through the sea. I was trying to catch up with the rowboats. 【推荐3】What a day! I started my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous the night before, but I had no reason to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!

The day started very early at 7:00 am. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. My mom dropped me off at the school gate about five minutes before the bell rang. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me.
