Mr. Hadley was my 6th grade teacher. At that time I was a short girl weighing 70 kilograms. Boys always laughed at me because of it. So I became an extremely shy young lady.
One day Mr. Hadley told us that we would be required to come to the front of the class and read the reports that we had completed.
When my turn came, I refused to stand in front of all those students and open up to their tricks. Mr. Hadley handed me my report and asked me to read it. I gave it back to him. He walked to the font and said, “Martha has a very good report here and I think everyone needs to hear her read it. If you make strange noises or make fun of her in any way, I will let you fail right here and now. OK?”
Mr. Hadley walked back to me and handed me the paper again, asking me to go to the front of the class. I walked there on legs that were shaking and I felt a rabbit in my chest. Everyone was all quiet, including those boys. I stood there trying to be calm.
Mr. Hadley walked over to me and put his arm around me, “You can do it. I have confidence in you!” His words helped me calm down. I read the report and instead of the kids laughing at me and making fun of me, they all stood up and clapped their hands.
From that day on the kids never made fun of me and some actually made friends with me. I continued to be quiet and shy all through school but 1 knew if I had to stand up in front of the class, I could do it.

What she had to say was simple—I was a follower with the potential of a leader, and what I needed was some new friends and some time to grow up. She suggested to my mother that I repeat the 7th grade. After a pout (噘嘴), a plea and a prayer, I made a deal, “give me the summer and I’ll show you!”
That summer, I made it my business to do just that. By the following school year, I was awarded a medal that valued my efforts. Two of those three friends she warned me of eventually became alcoholics—one an ex-con (前科犯), the other a woman-beater. Ms. Dinos saved my life.
Twenty years later, Ms. Dinos and I were reunited on the internet. However, she didn’t remember the event at all. Right then it hit me. That event that meant so much to me was just a singular moment in her well-lived life. And I learnt that Ms. Dinos had since become a famous garden designer, for she had a gift for planting seeds.
It was only months after reuniting with Ms. Dinos that an old student of my own popped up online. She informed me of the moment that I inspired her. According to her, I once shared a drawing of mine with the class. That student was so moved by the drawing that she wanted to learn to do the same. That picture ignited in her a passion that she later turned into a career. My own little seed was planted and now has grown.
Now understanding what I do about the power of planting seeds, I take every opportunity: share what I can with as many young people as possible. I offer bits of wisdom or words of encouragement, but sometimes just a smile—it goes a long way. I know that one day, when they’re ready for it, that seed I planted will he there, ready to grow.

C.He begged for another chance. | D.He decided to change schools. |

C.the author had the same feeling as Ms. Dinos | D.the author was surprised by Ms. Dinos’ reaction |
A.Invited. | B.Unfolded. | C.Sparked. | D.Displayed. |
A.Seeds need planting. | B.We are all gardeners. |
C.Pictures perform miracles. | D.Ms. Dinos predicts the future. |
I was sitting in math class; my teacher, Mrs. Gratz, was trying to get the attention of everyone arriving before the bell that would start the fourth period. As most of my classmates sat down and waited for our teacher to begin the lesson, a student walked in right after the bell rang. He was a real troublemaker. It was painfully obvious to anyone who knew him that he didn’t care much about school or authority. He continued walking through the classroom, sat down next to one of his friends and began talking loudly with him. At this point our teacher had attempted to quiet everyone down several times, succeeding with just about everyone except for him. By him arguing with a teacher for seemingly no reason and causing a scene, I could see on my teacher’s face that she was getting more and more upset as time went on, because her class time was being wasted.
It’s important to present yourself in a positive way to people that can have an effect on your life. Parents, police officers, teachers. Those in positions such as these are the ones who should be respected most, even if you don’t think so. Watching a young man argue back and forth with a teacher, a person of authority, taught me a valuable lesson about how to act when in a situation like this. If you disagree with someone, you should find the proper time and place to deal with it. Truly, the time for wasting time is not during school hours and the place for disrupting (扰乱) a teacher’s lesson is not in school itself.
I try to respect all figures of authority, especially when they treat the people under them fairly and with equal respect. Back in this 7th grade, this event changed my life, and that’s the reason why I still remember and learn from it to this day. Sitting in class and listening to the teacher every day can get boring, but it is also worth quieting down for, because of what you can take away from the class, and what you can gain from just showing some respect.
1. Use one word to describe the student who walked in right after the bell rang? (不多于 1 个单词)2. What examples does the writer give to show who should be respected most? (不多于 4 个单词)
3. When should a student deal with a problem he/she has with a teacher? (不多于 4 个单词)

Based on the number of failures he had seen in car groups, he estimated that only about one in fifty attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what an incredible opportunity he had.
Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2018 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before picking brains of a friend who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower onto the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the more recent Batman Tumbler from the series film Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2019, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba, before being used by Blackburn’s son for his hope.
“It was great. It was so good to see the kids’ and adults’ excitement at seeing the Batmobile.” Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lover’s hope is to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so he can visit sick children and take them out with his son.

A gym near my house was offering free two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo(摔跤和柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands, After the instructor showed various escape techniques, I wondered what I was doing there. Seconds later, I reminded myself that I was on a search to push my boundaries(极限). By the time class ended, I was full of energy.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a punch that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I'm proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself s not about strength; it's about strategy(策略). At the same time, I'm calmer and less anx1ous—a benefit my family enjoys. As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn't want to be late for her tennis match.

After two years of chemo (化疗) that helped control the disease, ay body was weak and lifeless. I felt as if I were a puppet who needed help to lift his arms or hold up his head.
I began to run. After six months my strength had come back. On one of my runs, one where I felt I could run forever I decided I was going to try to run a marathon.
After telling my Dad about my plan, he told me of a program that trains people to run marathon. while raising funds for Leukemia research at the same time. So that summer, through the Leukemia Society’s Team in Training program, I started to train for the Marine Corps Marathon. During mile after mile of uncertainty, the day finally came to run the marathon.
On October 27, 1996, at 8 A. M., along with 19. 000 other brave souls I started on a 26.2-mile journey that I will never forget.
I first saw my wife Patty at the six-mile mark She seemed happy that I was still looking as if I knew what I was doing, and having a good time doing it. At Mile 17, my mind was going back to those two horrible years that tried to bring my family and me down. I saw her again. The concern in her face told me she knew I was starting to struggle. I felt as if we were thinking the same, nine more miles and these last few years will be behind us.
That thought alone pulled me forward. Mile 22, 23, slowing but going, 24, 25, then there it was. The Iwo Jima War Memorial (纪念馆). I have seen nothing so grand and inspiring in my life. Three hours and forty-one minutes after I started, I crossed what I think has to be the most fitting finish line in all of road racing!
That night the Leukemia Society gave me a pin at post-race party that simply says, “Leukenia26.2.”
If God wills, my cancer may once again take away my hair and my strength, maybe even my life. But it can never take away my pin, or the fact that I am a marathoner.

Featuring 20 of her original recipes, Bake Away has been in the works since her first year of high school. It hit the shelves on Oct. 26, 2021, and was promising to enjoy good sales. Each recipe in the cookbook is tied to a location. The first, for CPS bread, is inspired by Vij’s memory of picking fruit in her grandfather’s garden in Temescal Valley.
The University of California Irvine first year student intends to major in literary journalism and minor in environmental science, but baking is in her blood. “I want to work at newspapers or magazines and write columns, specifically about the environment. I love to write, but my dream job is to own my own bakery,” Vij says. “That’s really my passion.”
“UCI was a good fit for me because my family is around me,” Vij says. “Family is a really big part of my life — something I can depend on — and I go visit them a lot. Each Bake Away recipe comes from a different city and a different experience I’ve had with my family.”
Her favorite is the U District cake, influenced by the tea she used to share with her mother on their monthly trips to Seattle’s University District. “It’s my whole family’s favorite recipe because it just tastes so good and because we’ve been making it more as a family over the past year. It’s kind of become a family recipe.”
The profits from Bake Away will go to No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit working to end child hunger. “Growing up, my mom and my family were really involved in volunteering, and I always wanted to give back,” Vij says. “I decided to partner with No Kid Hungry, especially because the book involves food.”

Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteer don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I also wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends, I flew to Caltutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
1. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who_______.A.has a strong wish to be successful |

While my brother chose the path of mastering musical instruments, I was attracted to the field of languages. Growing up in a multilingual household where Chinese, Cantonese, and English mixed, I felt it natural to continue exploring new linguistic possibilities.
Languages fascinated me. I was attracted by the way words gracefully rolled off tongues and how each language seemed to unlock a door to an entirely new world, no matter how challenging they were to learn.
Eager to try beyond Asian languages, it was my mother who suggested French as a suitable starting point. The elegance and poetic charm of the language quickly attracted me. The melodic flow and the way the words effortlessly danced off my tongue caused an exciting feeling, fueling my desire to explore deeper into its complexity. Interestingly, despite my passion and talent for it, French proved to be the language that took the longest to fully grasp. Nevertheless, I insisted and never gave up expanding my linguistic arsenal (宝库).
After realizing that Spanish wasn’t the right fit for me, I found myself addicted to the fascinating world of German. Being enrolled (就读) in a German-speaking school speeded my progress, and two years later, my command of German surpassed my years of studying French. As time passed, I added Latin, Ancient Greek, and Japanese to my linguistic arsenal.
It fact, speaking multiple languages is not a mere achievement; it is a joyous celebration of the richness of human expression. For me, it serves as a powerful tool to develop connections with people all over the world.
