Yachi has been pacing (领跑) for Youyou for several years. They crashed into each other repeatedly when they first tried running with the 30cm-long rope between them. When they run, a 30cm-long blue rope connects Youyou’s left wrist (手腕) to Yachi’s right. They move like each other’s mirror image, using the rope as a form of communication. When Yachi’s and Youyou’s speeds are the same, the rope will naturally relax. The two don’t actually need to talk too much about running. Now, they run like each other’s clones.
Thanks to the rope, running is no longer a lonely task, explains Yachi. “This is a matter of achievements for both of us. Not only am I helping him improve, he is also pushing me to hold on and be strong,” he says.
When preparing for a competition, more pacers join them, forming a running formation. During training, Yao Ying runs in front, Yachi is on Youyou’s left, and Xiao Yu’er is at the back. Watching them run from behind, the unbreakable formation seems to surround (包围) Youyou; but in fact, all of them are surrounded by the unbreakable force of friendship.
Training is no longer the only purpose of their runs. It also allows them to hang out together as friends. When they go out to eat, Youyou doesn’t really like the restaurants that are overly attentive because he’s visually impaired, which makes him feel uncomfortable.
Yachi, Yao Ying and Xiao Yu’er all know Youyou well. No matter what they do, how much progress in running is made, and what exciting competitions are waiting, running has allowed them to connect and head into the unknown together, which in itself is a great achievement.
1. What can be inferred when the rope connecting the runner and the pacer relaxes?A.They have different speeds. | B.Their rope should be removed. |
C.They need further communication. | D.Their running pace is harmonious. |
A.It is a boring task. | B.It is a win-win practice. |
C.It stops him from running faster. | D.It requires him to push the runner. |
A.The food is not pleasing. | B.He isn’t treated normally. |
C.He isn’t offered enough care. | D.There are too many people there. |
A.Pacing Is More Than Just Running | B.Friendship Develops with Competitions |
C.An Excellent Running Team Is Being Formed | D.A Visually Impaired Runner Achieves Success |

However, that changed when he approached the Discovery Channel to help kick off Shark Week with a race against one of the world’s fastest and most efficient shark-a great white!
On Sunday, July 23 at 7:00 p. m., over five million viewers tuned in to watch the competition. While television viewers saw the competitors swimming side by side, in reality, Phelps raced by himself in the cold Allantic waters off of Cape Town, South Africa. The Discovery Channel film crew then inserted his computer-made competitor simulating (模拟) a real shark’s speed, which was estimated by attracting a great white with a fake seal over the same 100-meter stretch of the Allantic.
Though Phelps managed to complete the distance in an impressive 38.1 seconds, 9.41 seconds faster than his personal best of 47.51 seconds, he was no match for the great shark, which clocked 56. I seconds. Like a true champion, the fish celebrated the victory by leaping out of the water. Phelps, meanwhile, took the loss in good humor, saying: “Remaleh? Nexttime ...warmer water.”
The swimmer later said/4Honestly, the first thought that went through my head when I saw the shark, is that there’s probably very little chance for me to beat him.
While some fans were disappointed that Phelps did not race a live shark in the ocean, organizing that would have been dangerous for the swimmer. Besides, Discovery Channel’s aim in organizing the competition was to cause excitement and interest in sharks. Considering that it was the highest Shark Week special in the program’s 29-year history, they surely succeeded.

Budapest
Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It's actually made up of the twin cities of Buda and Pest, which are separated by the mighty River Danube. The city is famous for its cafes. There are several good ones to choose from, but you must try either Gerbeaud, or the famous New York Cafe. Order a “somloi galuska", a very rich chocolate dessert. Finally, you can' t leave the city without visiting one of its amazing Turkish baths. Some of them date back to the 16th century.
Bucharest
A fourteen hours train ride east will take you through Transylvania to Bucharest, capital of Romania. Once there, you should visit Mamie's Inn, which is a 19th century caravanserai (an inn built around a large courtyard, which is big enough for caravans). It's located in the Lipscani district (the heart of the city), and it's also a great place to have lunch and a drink.
Sofia
From Bucharest it's only 300 kilometres to Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. The city sits below the massive Vitosha Mountain. Sofia is an ancient place, and parts of the city walls date back to the 7th century BC and can still be seen. It' s also a holy city, and two of its major tourist attractions are churches. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is well worth a visit, but you should find time for the Boyana Church, a small medieval Bulgarian Orthodox chapel. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has incredible wall paintings dating back to 1259.
So, we hope we've given you a few ideas of places to spend your Easter. Wherever you go, have fun and send us a postcard!
