Tea or coffee? Sometimes we choose one over the other based on the belief that it's    1     (healthy), better for keeping us alert (警觉的) or for calming us, or has fewer side    2     (effect), But is there any real reason to choose    3     tea and coffee, other than personal preference?

The amount of caffeine in tea and coffee varies,    4     depends on the strength, variety and brewing method, but coffee tends    5     (contain) more than tea. Purely based on the    6     (assume) that caffeine equals increased alertness, coffee wins at waking us up. But some research suggests it's not that simple.

There's evidence the effects of caffeine in a cup of tea are enhanced by an amino acid called L-theanine, if it is drunk    7     (regular). The research finds “L-theanine may interact with caffeine to enhance performance in terms of attention switching and the ability to ignore distraction”So if you find tea has    8     more positive effect on keeping you alert, you might be right!

Whats the price of all this extra alertness? After 5-6 hours, around half the caffeine you    9     (drink) will still be in your system, and after 10-12 hours, a quarter of it could still be there, according to sleep scientist Matt Walker. This means you may have trouble    10     (stay)asleep.

Winemaker Xu Hai long has gotten much busier after Nov.7 as this period is considered the best season of a year to make huangjiu, or yellow rice wine, in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province.

Every day, the 62-year-old winemaker performs a variety of tasks,     1    (include)soaking, steaming and mixing rice with yeast(酵母) before putting them in containers.

This time of the year also sees a marked increase in the number of visitors.

Among the recent visitors was     2    group of ten foreigners from various countries,     3     were on a tour of the Shaoxing Huangjiu town. Shaoxing, a waterside city, is     4    (wide) regarded as the home for yellow rice wine in China.

During the trip, Xu showed to the foreigners some of the     5    (step) required in the early stages of winemaking. Valles Sabrina Christine said she was particularly impressed by how the winemaker handled the rice.

The techniques employed by local winemakers like Xu are hardly different     6    those used by their ancestors thousands of years ago. In 2006, the process of making Shaoxing yellow rice wine     7    (list) as an intangible(无形的) cultural heritage under State     8    (protect).

According to Wang Jinjin, a national first-class winemaker and wine taster, the ancient methods take a lot of time and effort but produce    9    (good) tasting wine than modern means.

The locals would traditionally store the wine in preparation for future celebrations like the birth of a new child and weddings. Huangjiu drunk during a daughter’s wedding is called nverhong, or “daughter red”, while those prepared     10    (celebrate) a son’s graduation from college is called zhuangyuanhong, or “scholar red”.

If there were Grammy Awards for animals, the indri, a critically endangered species of animal in Madagascar,     1    (definite) could be the winner — just because they are the few existent animals     2     musical rhythm.

Rhythm in animals has been a topic of discussion for scientists. “Only a few primate species sing,     3     they are precious resources in our search for the evolutionary origins of human musicality,” said Dr. Aniruddh of Tufts University.

Scientists from Madagascar invested up to 12 years in the forest     4     (record) songs of the 20 indri groups, and found the presence of rhythms featuring in human songs. Further analysis found both a 1:1 rhythm, where intervals (间隔) between sounds are the same     5    (long) , and a 1:2 rhythm, meaning the second interval     6     (be) twice as long as the first one, present in the lemur's songs.

“If an indri had some sort of metronome (节拍器) in its head     7    (go) ‘tac, tac, tac,’ then they would likely produce     8     we see. It’s so close to human music,” Dr. Aniruddh said.
