As an English learner, we sometimes get questions like this: “How can I speak English with more confidence?" That is a great question.     1     Today, we have several pieces of advice to help you.

Every day, the most important person you talk to is yourself. That's to say, your own thoughts matter. If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may say things like, "English is too hard" "I'm so sorry for my English." What's worse, you are sure to start believing them.     2

To sound more confident, speak loudly and slowly enough so that people can easily hear you. Many English learners worry that speaking too slow will make them sound inexperienced.     3     So avoid worrying that you are speaking too slow for the people around you.

4     If you are not confident, you may try to say as little as possible. For example, if asked what people's favorite color is, an English learner may give a short, direct response like, "blue", while a native English speaker is likely to say, “Well, to be quite honest, I don't really have an actual color, but I guess I may go for something like blue or grey.”

Reading out loud can help build confidence in how your English sounds. List words you have trouble saying and later check their pronunciation.     5     So avoid checking word meanings in a dictionary while reading.

A.But you are more likely to make mistakes if speaking too fast.
B.Take a few minutes to read the materials that you enjoy aloud.
C.So replace unhelpful thoughts with better ones when speaking.
D.Using long sentences shows that you speak English confidently.
E.Learners should read for pleasure and enjoy what they are reading.
F.Speak in complete sentences and give longer responses when possible.
G.Whatever language we are learning, we would all love to speak confidently.

【推荐1】How to Improve English Pronunciation

It’s true that you do not have to sound exactly like a native English speaker. However, when you meet someone for the first time, a good pronunciation will help leave a good impression on him/her.     1

Learn the rules.

You cannot correct your pronunciation when you don’t know the rules of it. So, start improving your pronunciation by first making yourself clear about the knowledge.

Watch while listening.

Find an article with recording.     2     In this way, you can learn the relationship between the spelling of a word and the sound, and what words sound like when they’re in a sentence together.

Have yourself recorded.

Hearing your own voice can be a strange experience.     3     If there’s a letter or word that you want to improve upon, record yourself saying it. Then compare it with the recordings of native speakers. Find the differences and improve your way of pronunciation.

Add correct stress to words.

4     That means greater force is used in speaking some words. You can hear this when you say a word out loud. For example, the word “introduce” is pronounced with a stress at the end, so it sounds like this: “in-tro-DUCE”.

    5

After learning how to say something correctly, you need to practice often. For at least 30 minutes a day, repeat the correct way to pronounce the words. With enough practice, you can get what sounds right too.

A.Here are some tips on improving your English pronunciation.
B.Write down what you hear.
C.Look at the words while listening to the recording.
D.But it is a great way to improve your speech habits.
E.English is a stressed language.
F.There are some excellent recordings on English pronunciation.
G.Practice every day.

【推荐2】Do you want to improve your spoken English?     1

Repeat the language!

Repeat words and sentences over and over again until you can say them really fluently (流利地). For example, say “I went to the shops, I went to the shops” repeatedly.     2     Then later when you're speaking, if it’s come out naturally.

    3

First, write out in note form (笔记形式)the story you want to tell, and then use those notes to practise telling the story. Just choose any story you like, and practise telling it.

Memorize language!

4     You can do this by writing them out, or by speaking them out loud so that you’ll be speaking normally (正常地). And the more you do this, the more they’ll stick in your mind.

Practise forming questions!

Look at a sentence and see if you can change that into a question.     5     So, for example, when seeing the sentence, “She’s seen the film,” you need to change it into the question, “Has she seen the film?” And the more you do this, the more fluent and quicker you’ll get at making questions.

A.Practise telling stories!
B.Listen to English!
C.Try to remember as many phrases and expressions as you can.
D.Read your coursebook (课本)or a magazine.
E.Here are four quick tips for you.
F.Making questions is quite difficult if you haven’t been practising it.
G.The more you say it, the more it becomes fixed in your brain (刻在脑子里).

【推荐3】Maybe you live in places where English is not the main language. When you speak, your speech might be slower than you would like. This is because your mind is still translating things from your first language into English, which can also sound unnatural. English, like every other language, has its own sentence structure. The good news is that thinking in English can bring you a huge step closer to fluency! It is not very difficult, but it does take conscious effort and practice.

Think in single words

Charles Thomas has taught English to Union members, children and teenagers for over 10 years. He tells his students to name the things that they see around them, wherever they are. Start with nouns and then add in verbs, he suggests.

Think in sentences

For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like,“It s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.” Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.

Think in conversation

This is a great way to practice what you might say in a real conversation. For example, let's say the imaginary person asks you a question like, “What did you think of the talk show last night?” How would you answer? Imagine the conversation and practice it in your head. You can do this out loud or in silence.

Practice it daily

“When you're doing it every day, over and over again, little by little, that's the key. Because when you make things a habit, it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you're thinking in English,” Thomas says.
