Turkish Treats Hello London foodies! I’m kicking off this week’s blog by talking about a fantastic new Turkish restaurant in Soho called Moda. I can’t remember ever eating better dolma or hummus—it was so delicious! In fact, this is one of the things which the restaurant prides itself on—the freshness and authenticity of the ingredients. Apparently, the chef insists that the fruit and vegetables are brought over every day from his home region in Turkey—and from nowhere else. He may be a perfectionist, but it was so delicious that I can’t complain. Moda isn’t cheap, but it’s definitely worth every penny. And I’ve got great news for you. When I told him that I write a food blog, he said he’d give all my readers a 10% discount! Just mention this blog when you book. A very different restaurant, where I had lunch last Monday, is Chez Fitz. Situated near Leicester Square, its main selling point is that its food is all locally sourced (within 30 kilometres of the restaurant). My friends and I were completely amazed—we had no idea that so much could be grown so close to central London. But it turns out that there are pockets of green all over the city—you just need to know where to look. One final point: I couldn’t believe how pricey my weekly shop was this week. Normally if s about £40, but this week it was more than £55 for more or less the same amount of food. Any ideas why? More in a couple of weeks as I’m going away on my holidays tomorrow! | Comments |
SouthLondonMum 10 October Hi—regarding your last point, I’ve found the same thing recently. I read somewhere that the average ‘shopping basket’ has already increased by 20% this year. The prices have gone up so much, because of the awful weather we’ve been having, and they may go up even more. How are we meant to feed our families?
Ecovore 10 October I’m not sure we should be supporting restaurants like Moda. They are very bad for the environment. What about all the extra carbon emissions from the ‘food miles’ created by bringing over those ingredients from Turkey?
Anonymous 11 October I know what you’re saying, Ecovore, but don’t have a go at restaurants like Moda. If we grow exotic vegetables in the UK, then we have to use heated greenhouses and that probably uses even more energy. |

Ease (容易) of decision-making was the number one reason people gave me for eating the same breakfast or lunch every day. Choosing to drink a bottle of milk every morning takes some of the decision-making stress out of the start of the day. A bowl of cereal (麦片粥) was also among the quick, easy breakfasts people mentioned. In fact, experts say that it’s not a problem to eat the same thing every day, as long as that meal offers rich nutrition (营养). Mornings are busy for most people, so having a quick, easy breakfast makes a lot of sense.
Ease of preparation can go hand in hand with ease of decision-making, but it doesn’t have to. I sometimes prepare something that requires time or skills for my kids’ lunches if they have eaten the same thing every day.
The third reason people gave for eating the same thing every day was that an unchanged meal fits into their diet or nutrition plan. Some people who work regularly have found the right breakfast food to make them energetic, so they stick with it. Others who go on a diet prefer to eat the same thing rather than risk eating something they shouldn’t. It is easy for them to control their weight by sticking to the same breakfast daily.
The one response I didn’t receive from anyone was that they ate the same thing every day because they truly liked the food. I’ll admit: although I like eating hamburgers, I only eat them several times a week — but not every single day.

Tom I went to the Tai Kitchen last week with my friends. It’s the place with the long lie outside! But don’t worry—you won’t need to wait very long and the foods are worth the wait. Built at almost 10,000 feet on the top of an Andean mountain, the Incas built hundreds of structures made of stone. A large number of Machu Picchu’s surrounding structures date back to the early 13th century, but it was considered a chief sacred site far before then. The Inca people changed the large site into a very small but wonderful city, completely self-sufficient and hidden from below. Agricultural terraces (梯田) surrounded the entire city, fed by natural spring water, supporting the entire population.
Inca Trail
The trail is one of the most famous in the world and regarded as one of the best. It covers only 26 miles, combining cloud forest, green mountain scenery, forest, and plenty of tunnels, paving stones, and ruins. The four-day hike begins slowly but quickly changes into a difficult journey suitable for those in excellent shape. The trail winds through the Andes, leading alongside and through ruins. Though independent hiking was once permitted, now it must be done with a guide.
Funerary Rock
It is believed that the Funerary Rock at Machu Picchu was used as a place to prepare Inca nobles for preservation, or mummifying (做成木乃伊), a common habit among the tribe. Nobles would be laid out to be mummified by the hot sun and freezing cold nights after their organs were removed. The rock is also famous as a spot from which a view of the city is afforded.
Temple of the Sun
Within the city’s castle, deep within Machu Picchu, is the Temple of the Sun, accessed only by the Emperor and Inca priests. It means the Inca’s advanced knowledge of religion, weather, and nature, showing the great extent.
Incas went to adapt to and learn about nature. Still unbroken, the temple was built to honor the god Inti, who is exactly the sun. The temple was effectively protected. It was also a very important scientific center, built in half-moon shape with openings facing north and east. The windows’ shadows in the center of the temple helped see the start of winter solstice (至日), showing farming season.

【推荐3】FIVE UNUSUAL SPORTS
What sports are you into? Football? Tennis? Swimming? If you’re looking for a change, you might like to try one of these.
Octopush
Octopush (or underwater hockey as it’s also known) is a form of hockey that’s played in a swimming pool. Participants wear a mask and snorkel and try to move a puck (水球) across the bottom of a pool. The sport has become popular in countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. An ability to hold your breath for long periods of time is a definite plus.
Zoobombing
Zoobombing involves riding a children’s bike down a steep hill. The sport originated in the US city of Portland in Oregon in 2002. Participants carry their bikes on the MAX Light Rail and go to the Washington Park station next to Oregon Zoo (which is why it’s called “zoobombing”). From there, they take a lift to the surface, and then ride the mini-bikes down the hills in the area.
Office Chair Racing
Office Chair Racing consists of racing down a hill in office chairs that can reach speeds of up to 30kph. Strict rules are in place for competitors: they’re allowed to fit in-line skate wheels and handles to their chairs, but no motors. “We check each chair carefully in advance,” one of the organisers explained. The participants race in pairs wearing protective padding as they launch themselves from a ramp. Prizes are given to the fastest competitors and also for the best-designed chairs.
Fit 4 Drums
Fit 4 Drums is a new form of cardio-rhythmic exercise. Led by an instructor, the class involves beating a specially-designed drum with two sticks while dancing at the same time. It’s the first group fitness activity where you get to play a drum while getting an intense workout. A sense of rhythm is a definite advantage!
Horse Boarding
Horse Boarding involves being towed behind a horse at 35mph on an off-road skateboard. Professional stuntman Daniel Fowler Prime invented the sport after he strung a rope between his off-road “mountain board” and a horse. Participants stand on a board while holding onto a rope, attempting to maintain their balance as the horse gallops ahead. “The horse rider and the horse have to work together because if they don’t, the horse goes flying,” Daniel explained.
