TikTok, a hugely popular short-form video platform, shut down its Shop apparatus in Indonesia after the country banned commerce     1     social media platforms, a setback for the app’s venture in a major market. TikTok Shop is one of the social network’s latest attempts     2     (generate) more revenue. Creators and brands can add a Shop button     3     their videos and live broadcasts,     4     (allow) users to buy products with a few taps without leaving the app.

The app     5     (it) was not banned in Indonesia. But people there could no longer buy or sell goods through TikTok or other social media platforms after the trade ministry issued new regulations. The rules,     6     essentially authorize the separation of e-commerce and social media,     7     (mean) to protect local merchants, prevent algorithms from dominating the market and stop the use of personal data for business purposes.

Zulkifli Hasan, Indonesia’s trade minister, said recently that “predatory pricing” by social media companies was hurting small merchants.Some Indonesian merchants who had relied on TikTok Shop said the new rules hurt their business. Dennies Soesanto, who sells bags and suitcases, said his sales on TikTok Shop were triple that of other e-commerce platforms. “    8     (close) TikTok Shop is not saving the small and medium enterprises,” he said, “but saving other e-commerce platforms.”

The crackdown in Indonesia, home     9     six million sellers on TikTok, could increase the pressure on TikTok Shop in the other countries     10     it operates.

Starting from November 1st, people will be knocking on doors across the country     1    (collect) personal information. This is for the     2    (seven) national population census (人口普查). Normally, the Chinese population census takes place every 10 years. It gathers data including   name, age, ID number, gender, education, marital status     3     housing situation.

This year, about 7,000,000 staff will visit homes for registration work. New methods—online information registration will also be used during this census.     4    (compare) with previous surveys, new methods will be     5     (convenience) for people not living     6     they are officially registered, and who do not want to be bothered by census takers’ door-to-door surveys. The data     7     (expect) to give a full picture of the population—its size, structure and distribution and recent changes.

The census provides support for making national development policies and it has a large impact     8     our lives. For instance, areas with a higher number of children may receive     9    (much) funding for public schools. The results can be used to investigate population trends in different cities. The census will help find out     10     number of foreigners living in China and can also tell how many Chinese people have moved to other countries.
