Though a trip through Beijing has plenty of historical architecture to offer, the city's skyline also holds many achievements of modern design. However, Beijing has spread out its contemporary landmarks throughout the city, making it difficult for architectural enthusiasts to visit all of them. Therefore, we decided to gather them all into one place. Here is our list of Beijing's most iconic (标志性的) modern buildings:
CCTV Headquarters | The “Big Pants,“ as it is more commonly known, is one of just ten buildings in the city over 200m tall. The structure of the two leaning towers connected at the top and bottom by horizontal off-shoots (横向分支) is now so iconic that it is often used in film and television to prove the story is set in Beijing. |
CITIC Tower | Standing at 528m, CITIC tower is Beijing's tallest building and the tenth tallest skyscraper in the world. The office building serves as the headquarters of CITIC Group, but the basement level will soon contain a large shopping center and subway station. |
National Stadium | Better known by its nickname the "Bird's Nest”, the National Stadium is recognizable by its steel structures like a bamboo forest. The stadium, which seats an audience of 91,000, was built for the 2008 Summer Olympics. It is also scheduled to be used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics. |
National Centre for the Performing Arts | It's not hard to see how this theater earned the nickname of the “Giant Egg”. With an opera hall, music hall, several art exhibition halls, and restaurants, the National Centre for the Performing Arts is also the largest theater building in Asia. Besides the shape, its unique feature is that its appearance from glass to titanium (钛) and the surrounding reflection pool. |

But over the centuries, volcanic activity submerged this playground of the Roman nobility, leaving half of it beneath the Mediterranean.
Today, Baiae is one of the world’s few underwater archaeological parks open to visitors wanting to explore the remains of the ancient Roman city. A protected marine area, the site needs to be monitored for damage caused by divers and environmental factors. However, explains Davidde, Italy’s national supervisor for underwater cultural heritage, “Communication underwater is challenging.”
Cabled systems are the most reliable, but they are difficult to maintain and cover a limited operational area. And wireless internet doesn’t work well in water, because of the way water interacts with electromagnetic waves.
So Davidde teamed up with a group of engineers led by Chiara Petrioli, a professor at Sapienza University. Petrioli’s team has developed a network of underwater wireless sensors capable of gathering environmental data and transmitting it to land in real time. The system relies on AI algorithms (算法) to constantly change the network protocol (网络协议). As the sea conditions change, the algorithms adjust the information path, allowing the signal to travel up to two kilometers and data to be sent between transmitters one kilometer apart.
At Baiae, underwater internet allows remote, continuous monitoring of environmental conditions. Besides, it allows divers to communicate with one another and with colleagues above the surface, who can also use the technology to locate them with a high degree of accuracy.
Davidde anticipates that the network will be available to tourists visiting the archaeological site in the coming months. As they swim over the ruins, visitors will use waterproof smart tablets to communicate and to view 3D reconstructions of the ruins.
“Underwater internet has made monitoring of the archaeological site simpler and more efficient,” says Davidde, “At the same time, we can offer the public a new, interactive way to explore the underwater park.”

Visitors to the Olympic Games may leave disappointed if they see Athens only through the eyes of the typical tourist, who makes a beeline of the islands after the visit to the Acropolis(雅典卫城) and the unusual and attractive Plaka district. To fully appreciate and discover Athens’ many charms(魅力), do as the Greeks do: walk out into the neighborhoods, find the packed nightclubs, eat at one of the innumerable(数不清的) restaurants, or see Hollywood stars under real stars in a romantic outdoor cinema.
The Greek capital is named for the ancient goddess Athena, whose favourite animal was the owl(猫头鹰). It’s a fitting symbol for the city’s nocturnal (夜里的) nature, which often reaches its highest point in summer with a rush hour just before dawn.
As native Athenian Panos Demestiha said, Athens by day is unlivable(不宜居住的), but it’s magical at night. Athenians face up to heavy traffic block, decreasing green space, dusty streets… City officials are using the momentum(契机) of the August 13-29 Olympics to fix some of these problems and make city life more bearable.

The study, which involved people sitting for long and moderate cycling, suggests that whether and when we eat may affect how exercise affects us. In general, any exercise improves our health. But a wealth of recent science and personal experience indicate that different people can respond to similar exercise routines in different ways. Even if everyone completes the same amount of exercise, some people become more fit than others, or lose more weight, or gain greater control of their blood sugar.
Most exercise scientists believe that our genes, diets, figures, characters and other subtle aspects of our lives act together to shape how our bodies react to exercise. But some researchers suspect that meal timing matters as well. Working muscles need fuel during exercise, mostly in the form of sugar or fat. That fuel can come from our most recent meal, once its constitution sugars and fats reach our bloodstreams, or from our bodies’ stores of fats and sugars.
We all have such stores, especially of fat, some of it staying in our muscles and they are well and evenly matched. This muscle fat becomes problematic if we accumulate too much of it. Fatty muscles do not respond well to the hormone insulin (胰岛素), which directs sugar from the blood into the muscles. As a result, excess fat can contribute to insulin resistance, high blood sugar levels and increased risks for Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic (新陈代谢的) conditions.

It took 10 years to construct the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It connects the city of Kobe, on Japan’s mainland, with Iwaya on Awaji Island. Before it opened, the only way to get between the two cities was by ferry. However, the waterway was at the mercy of severe storms and when two ferries overturned in 1955, killing 168 people, public anger convinced the government of the need for a bridge. It's the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a length of 1,991 meters.
