Henry Cavill: Bring Superman to Life
Henry Cavill knew that he wanted to be a star at 16 years of age, after a chance meeting with movie star Russell Crowe who inspired his passion for acting. But for the British-born actor, the bright lights and attraction of Hollywood were a long way away. Supported by his secretary mother and stockbroker father, he decided to study drama during high school. His journey to super star began.
Before gaining the international recognition he has now, Cavill tried out for roles in the Harry Potter and Twilight series but failed to get either. He would have to keep waiting for his big chance.
Determined as ever, Cavill took any acting jobs he could get his hands on and appeared in several low-budget horror movies and TV shows in hopes of getting noticed. It almost worked. In the early 2000s, at just 22 years old, he narrowly missed out on becoming the new James Bond. Finally, in 2007, his hard work paid off. He won a leading role as the first Duke of Suffolk in the period show The Tudors. The TV show was very popular and helped to raise Cavill's popularity in America.
In 2011, Cavil landed his breakout role, playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe. He hasn't looked back and has since starred in many hit films, such as Mission: Impossible- Fallout.
More recently, he stepped back on to the small screen. Since 2019, he has starred in the popular series The Witcher, adapted from the book series and video games of the same name. In the TV show, Cavill played a brave monster hunter named Geralt of Rivia, which was the perfect role for Cavill because he was a fan of the video games. Cavill also got a chance to play a classic English character — master detective Sherlock Holmes — in 2020's Enola Holmes.
However, Cavill isn't just a good guy on screen. His charity work also makes him a real-life hero. In 2014, he took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge while wearing his full Superman suit to support the ALS Association. Currently, he is an ambassador for the UK's Royal Marines Charity, which supports war veterans (退伍军人). Why does he do it? He love to make people feel good and bring smiles to people' faces. Indeed, Henry Cavill in living proof that you don't always need to wear a cape (斗篷) to act like a hero.

The Hart Library
We are still stocking the Hart Library, a complete library containing everything from novels, poetry to reference materials.
Please note that many of the books and other works provided on this site were written many years ago, before the invention of the radio, atomic bombs and cars. Some are even older, written when the world was run by kings and queens, and most people did not know how to read them. The works reflect the times in which they were written, and many contain views about race, religion, science and other things that we find annoying or just wrong today.
We believe that part of the value of these works is the window they provide on the past. By providing these books we do not mean to present any point of view, except that education and reading are good.

And it shows how far phone-based AR has progressed in the four and a half years since Pokémon Go, a 2016 AR mobile game, sent millions of people out into the streets searching for imaginary creatures.
The free app, which comes out in time for next week’s landing of the Perseverance rover (探测器) on Mars, is nearly identical in design to the Smithsonian Channel’s Apollo’s Moon Shot released for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 2019. In that one, you could use your phone to send a virtual Saturn V rocket into space, and learn about the Apollo astronauts and their machines through more than a dozen interactive experiences. Take some photos on the moon, suited up in the Apollo 11 spacesuit, and share with friends on social media.
Simple AR has taken off in shopping apps and social media in recent years. But Mission to Mars AR shows that the technology is capable of much more than just adding rabbit ears or cool sunglasses to your selfies (自拍). The app offers seven experiences, starting with an overview of Martian geography. Turn the globe in front of you to inspect the planet’s frozen polar caps and vast valleys.
The experiences in Mission to Mars AR add a bit more challenge, but are easy to master after a couple of tries. Guide Perseverance through its “seven minutes of terror” — NASA’s now semi-official term for a Mars landing. The “Mission to Mars” module offers the most interaction. You guide the rover from rock to rock, using a laser to analyze their contents while being careful not to crash or get stuck in the sand. You can even fly a small helicopter on Perseverance, which is sure to be one of the real mission’s highlights.
Just as NASA rovers have advanced from tiny Sojourner in the 1990s to Perseverance, we’ve come a long way from just downloading Mars photos for our desktop wallpaper.

During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on "mother" — the real mother or the mother-substitute.
During the first two weeks of its warmth is perhaps the most important psychological thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes — one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However, if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.
Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Something that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire doesn’t "rub" as well as does soft wire cloth. Prolonged "contact comfort"with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.
According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a fury little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the bay rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding on to its "mother".
1. After the first two weeks of their life, baby monkeys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the former is ________________.A.larger in size | B.closer to them |
