How have you been? I’m having a good time on my holiday in Shangri-La. It is the name of a city in Yunnan, China. I decided to come here because I wanted to experience the real Shangri-La for myself, even if it’s different from the paradise we read about in the book. So far, I really like it here.
On Monday, I left Lhasa at noon, and after changing flights once, I reached Shangri-La at eight in the evening. That night, I was so tired that I had a quick bite to eat and then crashed at the hotel.
Yesterday, I went to the Potatso National Park. The park covers such a wide area that the ticket for the park includes a bus tour, as it is the only way to see all the major sites in one day. Just to give you an idea of how large the place is, imagine a park that spans across vast forests, wetlands, lakes, meadows, and several villages! On the bus, I made friends with the passengers around me, and they said that I had definitely picked the right season to visit the park. The autumn scenery, they said, would be absolutely picture-perfect.
On top of its beautiful scenery, the park is also famous for its rich biological diversity. Did you know that Potatso makes up less than one percent of China’s total land area, but it contains more than 20 percent of the country’s plant and animal species? I even saw two black-necked cranes (鹤) at the picturesque Bita Lake! Bita Lake is absolutely my favorite place in Potatso. Just imagine, a beautiful lake, blue skies, majestic mountains, and golden trees all around me. Spending time there can be an amazing experience, which gives me a good rest.
Tomorrow, I am going hiking at the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Fingers crossed that there will be good weather! Anyway, I need to get some sleep now since tomorrow’s going to be a long day, but I’ll tell you all about it when I get back!
Love,
Chris

【推荐1】Saving Mr. Banks (2013) ★★★
BBC One, 10:30 p.m.
John Lee Hancock’s film unapologetically tells the Disney side of the twisted making of Mary Poppins. It presents Walt Disney’s (by Tom Hanks) struggle with PL Travers (by Emma Thompson), who wrote the original books, as a kind of Norman Conquest of charm over a brilliant but unhappy writer. The sugar-to-medicine rate is 15 parts to one, but there’s nothing wrong with true sweetness.
The Dark Mirror (1946, b/w) ★ ★ ★
BBC Two, 8:05 p. m.
Olivia de Havilland, one of the last surviving stars of golden-age Hollywood cinema, died last month, so this film makes for a sad rewatch. It’s an old-fashioned thriller in which psychiatrist (精神病医生) Lew Ayres has to decide which identical twin ( both played by de Havilland) has committed a murder. The entire story is somewhat unrealistic but de Havilland fully shows her acting skills. Robert Siodmak directs.
Jonathan Edwards: One Giant Leap ★ ★ ★ ★
BBC Two, 8:30 p.m.
Twenty-five years ago, medals for British athletes were very rare indeed. The 1995 World Athletics Championships brought just one gold for the UK, for triple-jumper Jonathan Edwards, whose world record leap (跳) of 18. 29 m stood for two decades. This film tells a story of pressure, faith and positive thinking.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015) ★ ★ ★ ★
ITV4, 9:55 p.m.
In the famous college experiment of the title, a psychology professor set up a make-believe prison and randomly assigned students to be either prisoners or guards to study the effects of unearned authority. The frightening results are captured (捕获) in Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s recreation. Ezra Miller plays a prisoner abused by the guards, while Billy Crudup is excellent as the unknowable professor.

【推荐3】National Space Center, Leicester
An interactive museum of super-size space experiences: from a giant planet Earth you can touch to the UK’s biggest domed planetarium and a 42-meter rocket tower. You can’t miss the latter as you drive into Leicester—the structure looks like it's wrapped in giant inflatable pillows. Inside, it houses Blue Streak and Thor Able rockets. Take in the full scale of them by riding a glass-sided lift up to the viewing platform. Elsewhere, there are six galleries with plenty of buttons to press and screens to touch. It's all under cover so it's a good place to visit on a rainy day!
What about lunch?
The Boosters Café serves reasonably priced hot and cold snacks and drinks (hot dog from £4.95, plus jacket potatoes, soups, sandwiches and salads) at the foot of the center's two rockets. The café offers vegetarian and vegan options too. There's more seating in its Soyuz Lounge. Look out for the table with the big red button that says “Do not press”, and make sure you press it. We took sandwiches and ate them while we queued for the planetarium show.
Exit through the gift shop?
The gift shop is the first thing you pass on entry and, as this place is one big loop, it’s also the last thing you see as you leave. It's stocked with space-themed souvenirs including books, games and telescopes. Some are quite pricey.
Getting there
There is a regular bus service(No. 54) with a stop two minutes' walk from the center, as well as a park and ride service from Birstall. East Midlands Trains and Cross-Country Trains operate services to Leicester station, from which the center is a 25-minute bus ride. If driving, it’s just off the A6,north of the city center. Parking is £3 for the day.
Value for money
It's not cheap-adult £15, 5-to 16-year-olds £12-but once you've paid you can revisit as many times as you want in a year, and admission is free for kids under five.
Opening hours
10 a.m.—4 p.m. Monday to Friday,10 a.m.—5 p.m. weekends and school holidays.
