An unlikely combination of Irish dance and hip-hop music is flying high on the Internet as a young African-American dancer combines her passions in her videos during quarantine.
With fast-paced steps on TikTok, college student Morgan Bullock, 21, has got more than l million views and the hearts of fans worldwide. “It was really unexpected and it happened really fast,” Bullock said in an interview.
Bullock has been dancing since she was 3 and began Irish dance training at the age of 10.She placed 43rd in 2019 at the World Irish Dance Championships, which has been put on hold during the quarantine.
As Morgan's videos became very popular, she faced questions about whether this style of dance is fit for her. “I haven't really had to think about my race as an Irish dancer,” she said. “At the beginning, my mom had reservations just because it was something that we had never heard of and it's not very typical for someone who looks like me to want to do Irish dancing. But after years of competing with Irish dancers across the globe, my mother rejects what others say. You wouldn't tell an English girl she can't do ballet just because she's not French. It's just a form of dance. Because Irish dance is also a dance form, it's such an amazing thing that it is something that people can enjoy all over the world without, you know, shame from the Irish dance community.”
Morgan is grateful that her dancing can educate and inspire a wider audience about Irish culture. “Growing up, I didn't really have someone to look to as an Irish dancer who really looked like me. So it's just really great that I can be that person for young girls and boys or whoever wants to do Irish dancing or do something that's a little bit out of the box for them.”

He thought the team could make something to help hard-of-hearing people enjoy live music even more with the technology now available.
Belquer, who is also a musician and theater artist, is now the “Chief Vibration Officer” of Music: Not Impossible, which uses new technology to address social issues like poverty and disability access. His team started by tying different vibrating cell phone motors to bodies, but that didn’t quite work. The vibrations were all the same. Eventually, they worked with engineers to develop a light haptic (触觉的) suit with a total of 24 vibrating plates. There are 20 of them tied to a undershirt that fits tightly around the body like a hiking backpack, plus one that ties to each wrist and ankle. When you wear the suit, it’s surprising how it feels.
The vibrations are mixed by a haptic DJ who controls the location, frequency and intensity of feeling across the suits, just as a music DJ mixes sounds in an artful way. “What we’re doing is selecting and mixing what we want and send it to different parts of the body,” said the DJ. The haptic suits were just one component of the event. There were American Sign Language interpreters; the music was displayed on a screen on the stage.
The suits are the star attraction. Lily Lipman, who has auditory processing disorder, lit up when asked about her experience. “It’s cool, because I’m never quite sure if I’m hearing what other people are hearing, so it’s amazing to get the music in my body.”

These large seabirds are socially monogamous (一夫一妻制的) and often mate for life, staying with the same partner with trust. But “divorce” is not unheard of. As is the case with other monogamous animals, a female albatross will leave a partnership that lacks breeding (繁殖) success.
Although “divorce” is natural among these birds, Ventura recently began noticing that its rates seemed to vary from year to year for the roughly 15,500 pairs of black-browed albatrosses breeding on New Island. “There were clearly years in which more pairs split up, compared with the previous years,” says Ventura, whose team combed through about 15 years of breeding data.
To investigate, the group focused on two environmental variables (变数) vital to the albatross: wind speed and sea-surface temperature. Each affects the birds in different ways. Higher winds make it easier for them to soar for greater distances to gather food. Increasing sea-surface temperatures, on the other hand, limit the nutrients available to the albatross by curbing the production of phytoplankton (浮游植物), which has huge effects on the rest of the marine food web. As a result, albatrosses must travel farther and struggle more to find enough food. This throws breeding schedules into disarray and increases stress levels among partnerships — both factors that can decrease breeding success.
And digging deeper, the team found that in warmer years female albatrosses were more likely to leave their mate even after successful breeding attempts. “Previous successful females are the ones that are most affected by this.” Ventura says. Ventura assumes that similar patterns may appear in other seabird populations and possibly among some monogamous mammals, highlighting a potentially overlooked consequence of climate change. “If you have a situation where increasing sea-surface temperature is leading to higher divorce rates, which reduces breeding success for the populations as a whole,” she says. “Ultimately you’re sending fewer albatrosses out into the world, and that’s going to impact the population more widely.”

Vihlen once made an 84-day crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1968. It was then the smallest boat to have made the journey. The sailing boat April Fool was 5 feet and 11 inches long. But Tom McNally broke the world record in 1993 by crossing the Atlantic in a boat that was 5 feet and 4.5 inches long.
In order to regain the world record, Hugo set out alone later that same year to cross the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Falmouth. This time he was in Father’s Day, his home-built boat, which was half an inch shorter than McNally’s.
During his crossing, Hugo had to sleep on his back with his knees bent. He woke every hour to check his heading direction and general sailing conditions. After facing everything the Atlantic Ocean could throw at him, and some close encounters with large ships, Hugo finally arrived in Falmouth 105 days later. He could hardly walk and had lost 34 pounds in weight, but he had regained his record.
His reception on arrival in Falmouth was hardly a hero’s welcome. One of the waiting journalists found him a pizza to eat while his boat was taken to a local sailing boat club. When they arrived at the sailing club for a celebration tea, they found the club dosed. He felt a pity for that. But luckily, a member of the public brought a bottle of champagne to toast his success.

Malala remembers her feelings, “I really had two choices. One was to remain silent and be killed, and the second was to speak up and then be killed. I chose the second one.”
Using a fake name, she wrote a diary about the difficulties under the Taliban, which was published on the Internet at age 11. At the same time, she used her real name and began making public speeches in favor of education. Months later Malala was identified as the diary’s author.
By 2012 Pakistan’s army had forced most of the Taliban out of Swat and restored (恢复) order. Life was returning to normal, and girls were returning to school. Malala’s life, though, was about to take an unexpected turn.
On October 9, 2012, Malala and her fellow students got on the bus after school to go home. Minutes later, two men boarded the bus and asked, “Who is Malala?” Without realizing what they were doing, the students turned and looked at their friend, showing who she was. The men shot Malala in the head, and Malala was badly injured.
Fortunately, Malala had an operation and survived. However, she needed additional care, so doctors decided to fly her to Birmingham, England, for recovery. Malala spent three months in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham making an outstanding recovery.
Nine months later on July 12th — her 16th birthday — Malala spoke at the United Nations. In a speech that was heard around the world, she demanded education for everyone.
On December 10, 2014, Malala and another person were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. At 17, Malala had become the youngest person to ever receive it, and she offered these words. “I’m just a determined and even stubborn person who wants to see every child getting quality education.
