You may have celebrated the new year on January 1st, but the next day cats get to celebrate the new year. Well, actually, cats don't celebrate the new year, they celebrate the mew year.

Any cat owner will tell you that cats consider themselves to be far, far better than us. They most certainly feel they deserve all that life has to offer, so why not have a Happy Mew Year Day For Cats Day just for them? Like the human version of New Year's Day, it is on this special day that our feline(猫科的)companions can paw and consider the “mewness” of the brand new season and all of the possibilities it holds. Perhaps this will be the year their people start feeding them tinned food instead of dry? Will the useless dog realize that the cat is king in this house? All these questions and more can be considered by our kitties today while they go about their normal business, looking distant and disinterested.

The truth is that many animal related holidays can also help raise awareness about the millions of unwanted, unloved and abused pets that end up in animal shelters and are eventually put to sleep for lack of funds to keep them alive. So if you haven't got your own perfect feline ruler yet, it's time to take action on January 2. As you're welcoming in the New Year into your life, won't you consider opening your heart and your home to a new four legged friend as well?

Cats can serve many purposes around the home- they are natural, greedy hunters; they're the perfect mix of both fun and silly. Nothing beats the thankfulness of a cat, for sure! You may have all sorts of New Year's resolutions that may or may not work out, but adopting a cat is something you will never regret, and the cat will never forget.

1】When parrots are kept as single pets, they tend to feel lonely just like humans. This is why researchers looked for a way to connect single pet birds by teaching them how to video call each other.

This experiment is not incredible since parrots are known to be very smart and easy to train. If they can be trained to talk, teaching them how to make a video call would be a piece of cake. However, what the researchers wanted to know through this study was whether birds would call each other when given a choice. The answer to this was a clear “yes”. Researchers from Northeastern University, the University of Glasgow, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that virtual interactions could help with the behavior of a parrot and improve their communication skills.

In the first two weeks of the study, the birds learned how to make a video call by ringing a bell and touching an image of another parrot on the screen. The caretakers carefully monitored the birds’ behavior during this stage and ended the call as soon as the birds stopped paying attention or started to show signs of fear or aggression (攻击性).

The next phase, which they call the “open call period”, allowed the birds to make calls freely and pick the bird they wanted to call. The remaining 15 participants made 147 video calls over the period of three months, which was equal to over 1,000 hours of video footage.

The study had a few significant findings. First, the birds engaged in most calls and formed strong preferences. It also showed that the birds who initiated the most were the ones who got the most call requests from other birds, which is similar to human socialization. The birds also developed attachments with their virtual friends’ human caretakers.

The researchers warned owners not to do the same experiment on their own as it should only be done by trained caretakers. It may cause parrots to become aggressive, scared, or uncomfortable.

1. What is the purpose of the experiment?
A.To test parrots’ intelligence.B.To improve parrots’ mental health.
C.To help parrots to develop more skills.D.To find a suitable way to raise parrots.
2. What made the experiment possible?
A.Parrots’ needs.B.Parrots’ preferences.C.An experienced team.D.Parrots’ nature.
3. In which case did the researchers end the video call in the experiment?
A.When the parrots were tired.B.When the parrots were busy calling.
C.When the parrots showed discomfort.D.When researchers got their desired results.
4. Why did the researchers warn owners not to do the same experiment themselves?
A.To avoid causing harm to the parrots.B.To protect the owners from being hurt.
C.To prevent their research being copied.D.To get more trained caretakers involved.

【推荐2】The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat: the loss of their food—bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.

Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.

A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the report’s authors. He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world.”

In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves.

“But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.

The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of the Chinas wild panda population. In addition, about 375 are living in research centers and zoos in China.

1. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Necessity to Change Pandas’ FoodB.A New Threat Faced by the Pandas

2. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.
B.Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.
C.Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will possibly disappear.
D.Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.
3. What does Liu Jianguo mean?
A.Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.
B.China needs more help from World wildlife Fund.
C.China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
D.It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5 degrees.
4. How many wild pandas are there in China?
A.About 2,000.B.About 635.C.About 260.D.About 2,635.

【推荐3】In Northwestern Italy, rice farms are employing bats. Bats are the foremost known predators of insects that are active at night, including several pests that can be found in rice fields. "The idea is that what is needed to achieve sustainable food production is what we already have, but has been ignored for a decade," says Laura Garzoli, 2017 winner of BCFN Young Earth Solutions.

“It has been predicted that, globally, 50 percent of pest species have become pests because chemicals killed their natural predators. There is no sustainability in the long term if there are no conservation efforts,” says Garzoli.

Since 2017, Garzoli, along with colleagues from the National Research Council has fixed 60 artificial bat roosts in three rice fields in Northwestern Italy. Now, they are collecting bats’ waste to analyze their diets at these sites and to gain insight into the insects living in these areas.

“In Italy, there are 34 bat species, each feeding on a variety of insects —each bat species has its preferred insect snack,”—says Garzoli. Bats can eat up to one-third of their body weight each night, which means they can consume thousands of insects per night. They are also flying hunters — they can prey on new non-native pest species.

Garzoli is committed to developing an awareness of the importance of bats in the ecosystem. "Their usefulness has been acknowledged in several countries — not only do they contribute to protecting crops, but they are important pollinators. Bats still get bad press in the news, in particular concerning the spreading of virus diseases, says Garzoli to Food Tank. She explains, "Many bat species are nowadays facing the risk of extinction.”

Garzoli is also drafting a best practice guide for farmers outlining habitat management techniques for sustainable production.

1. Why do some species become pests according to Garzoli?
A.Their habitats are endangered.B.Ineffective chemicals are widely used.
C.Their natural enemies die off.D.People are unaware of their danger.
2. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Bats' ability to manage insects.B.The variety of bats’ diets.
C.The risk of increasing foreign pests.D.The condition of bat roosts.
3. What could cause the extinction of bats according to the text?
A.An increase in unknown diseases.B.The introduction of new crops.
C.Their poor adaptability to artificial homes.D.People's misunderstanding of them.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Turn waste into treasureB.Say yes to bats
C.Applaud BCFN Young Earth SolutionsD.Unlock the secrets of rice farms
