Michelle was eight years old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Jack, now only an infant(婴儿). He was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save Jack the baby now but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

At the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little moneybox. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the drug store six blocks away . . .

She waited for a long time before the pharmacist(药剂师)turned around and asked her. “And what do you want?”

“Well, it's' about my brother,” Michelle answered . “He's really, really sick . . . and 1 want to buy a miracle.”

“I beg your pardon?”said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don't sell miracles here, little girl .I'm sorry but I can't help you, ” the pharmacist said. “Listen, I have money to pay for it.” And with these words, Mich poured out all the coins from her pockets. At this time, a well-dressed man behind Michelle stooped down and ask the little girl. “I'm selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”

“One dollar and eleven cents, ” Michelle answered in a low voice. “And it's all the money I have, but I can some more if I need to.”

Two Tickets to the Big Game

Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big quarterfinals basketball game.

Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s outstretched hand. Marcus, the oldest, spoke the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets? But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you?”

“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb, the youngest.

“Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad.

“I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only has two season tickets. He was thoughtful enough to offer the tickets to Saturday’s game to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend.”

Dad scratched his head. “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most. Let me sleep on it—okay, guys and girls?” he added quickly before I could correct him.

The next morning, we hurried into the kitchen, only to find a note next to our breakfast, which read, “Mom and I go to pick up some books from the library. All of you get started on the Saturday chores as soon as you finish breakfast.”

“Chores! He’s got to be kidding.” Marcus said as he set down his glass of milk with a thud(砰的一声). “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is a mere eleven hours away?”

“Wait for me!” Caleb added, slurping the last of his milk and dashing after his brother.

A few minutes later, as I was washing off the kitchen countertops, I heard the familiar “thump…thump…thump” of the basketball bouncing off of the driveway. Frustrated, I knocked on the window three times. When the boys looked up, I meaningfully held up a kitchen sponge and dishtowel. Marcus casually nodded to me and held up five fingers. Sure, five more minutes! I shook my head from side to side as I began to replace the lid(盖子) on the garbage container.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,

Papa had a special relationship with nature. He always found something there to appreciate: a white cloud floating in the distance, birds darting about the trees, a field of grain blowing in the wind. Little things I barely even noticed captured his fancy and filled him with joy. He'd been that way since I was a kid.“Beautiful," he would say about a view we'd seen a hundred times before." Learn to love nature and you will find true happiness!" He always told me.

But the man looking out the patio door with me now wasn't the same father I'd grown up with. Diagnosed with Alzheimer (老年痴呆) at 52, he'd moved in with my husband and me and our four children. This Papa forgot names and words. Most of time, he just sat there quietly and listlessly, without saying a single word.

Every day I raced against time. Kids' busy schedules kept my eyes on our family calendar of events. Before I knew it, this day had flown by, and it was time to pick my daughter up from after-school swim practice. Papa and the toys took a ride with me to the pool. My daughter climbed in back with her towel, chatting with her brother In a low voice fearing that I would he angry about too much noise, while Papa sat quietly in the passenger seat.

I stepped on the gas, thinking about starting dinner. If I got the chicken in the oven right way. I could mix up a batch of cookies for desert. Jon could get started on his science project...My mind was occupied with housework, suddenly, I heard a strange noise. There was something wrong with my car! Pulling over, we all got out and waited for traffic police. The road at this spot lay between two lakes, a little far away from the city center. Thinking about my schedule and sick papa, my whole world was going to collapse at that moment.

Mrs. White, the English teacher, gave the class a writing task. “Write about your summer vacation,” she said. “Be. as creative as you can. But make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”

That night Sam stared at a blank sheet of paper at his desk. What could he write about his boring summer vacation? He’d actually been happy to get back to school.

So he wrote what he wanted. Not an essay (短文) but a short story, science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer - it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens (外星人) just worked 24 hours a day!

Sam handed in the story soon. However, later that night he lay awake until 3A. m. , thinking. “ How will Mrs. White like my writing?” English was his favorite. Maybe he would ask Mrs. White for a chance to write another one she wanted.

The next morning, Sam got to school, only to know Mrs. White had already read and graded the essays.
