This is a major change from a city that was once considered harmful for bicycle riders. Now, city leaders are hoping for a 100 percent turn around. Today, over 1 million Parisians are traveling by bike daily without the proper infrastructure, using lanes (车道) shared by cars and motorcycles. This will all soon change.
Some of these measures are already in place. As part of the 2021-2016 cycling plarcalled Velo Act 2, bicycle parking will be increased at the same time car parking spaces are reduced. The city has already removed 70 percent of its on-street automobile spots. There will be 40,000 secure bike spaces installed near railroad stations funded by the city and an additional 50,000 will be built. Paris already has 1,000 km of safe bike paths including 52 km that were added during the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) when people were hesitant to use public transportation. There are now plans to add an additional 130 km of paths to encourage people to cycle. The aim of Velo Act 2 is to allow people to cycle from one end of Paris to another.
“This cycling plan is one of the essential parts of ecological and social transformation that we are leading in Paris,” said David Belliard.

Local authorities in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin trialled (试行)a temporary widening of two cycle paths on 27 March, arguing it would help cyclists keep the required 1.5-metre distance apart while car traffic was down owing to Germany’s coronavirus (冠状病毒)restrictions.
On Friday, the council declared the plan a success because it had improved cycling safety while not blocking traffic.
The council said it had used removable tape and mobile signs to mark out the widened paths, which can be removed when the current restrictions on movement are lifted.
Residents in 133 other German cities have formally submitted applications for similar pop-up bike paths to their local authorities on the back of a campaign by Environmental Action Germany (DUH), an environmental NGO.
The campaign group cites new research linking air pollution to higher coronavirus death rates as an argument for redrawing road signs across the country. “The coronavirus is showing us that clean air is necessary,” said DUH’s chair, Jürgen Resch. “It is now especially important to temporarily make it more important for people to move safely on their bikes. This will help improve air quality, enable exercise in fresh air while keeping a safe distance and avoid unnecessary accidents.”
In Germany, bike repair shops are allowed to work because of the Covid-19 going on. Three federal states, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, have allowed bike shops to stay open.
1. Why did German cities decide to widen temporary cycle paths?A.To avoid traffic jams. | B.To go to work conveniently. |

【推荐3】Sales of electric vehicles(EVs)grew by 40 percent last year worldwide. In the US, nearly a third of drivers want their next car to be electric. Almost 100 pure-electric vehicles are set to be launched by the end of 2024. Many manufacturers, including GM, Jeep, and Volvo, have promised to offer fully electric lists before this decade is done.
Though some EVs are still eye-wateringly expensive, plenty of other EVs are even more affordable. When assessing the cost of an EV, keep in mind that many states offer additional buying payment if you're switching to an electric vehicle. Some models will even qualify you for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. Then there are the long-term savings. A typical EV owner spends less than a traditional car owner on vehicle services. One reason is that EVs don't have transmissions or clutches, two of the costliest parts to repair.
EVs go without the classic vroom(加速时发出的呜呜声)we expect to hear when we floor it. That quietness can catch pedestrians off guard and strikes some drivers as terrible. That's why several electric automakers have turned to sound designers to copy these desired engine noises.
You can run an electric car through a car wash without worry. The water will not damage any of the electrical components or the battery because these systems are specially sealed to prevent water entry. What you do need to watch out for, however, is extreme cold or heat. Both will affect the battery and reduce an EV's range.
While EVs produce far fewer emissions than conventional cars do, they aren't without environmental influence. Coal is still burned to create the electricity that charges them. And EV production is emission intensive(密集排放型). So power systems need to become carbon-free and EV batteries need to fully become recyclable before EVs can be truly emission-free.
1. What can we know about EVs from Paragraph 1?A.Their trend is uncertain. | B.Their future is promising. |
C.Their producers are declining. | D.Their purest ones are launched. |
A.Lack of expensive parts. | B.Long-term free repair fees |
C.The government's support. | D.The additional buying payment. |
