My family live on a farm, in the middle of a small jungle. Every day after school, I go to the fields with my father. Once, at the corner of our field, I encountered a shy baby deer. Naturally, I tried to pet it, but it ran away. Eventually, he started accepting food from me. Soon we were familiar with each other. I called him Choco. I can’t live without him and he can’t live without me.

One day I was playing with Choco on the farm. I sadly noticed two men standing just opposite our farm. I kept on playing till dusk, when I suddenly had to go back to home. As soon as I walked in, Hardy, My dog, greeted us, wagging his tail.

That night, Choco probably went to his hut. I was at home and in bed, but my mind was still with the road and the men. Why did they come to watch us? I was worried. I couldn’t fall asleep as usual.

The next morning, I could find Choco nowhere. I was sure the two men had taken MY CHOCO! My mind was uncontrollable as I followed Hardy in his search for Choco. We finally reached the place. It was a big house, with an open a gate. Hardy jumped in, and I followed him. As was expected, Choco was there beyond the fence. I must rescue him. All of a sudden, a man and a black dog started chasing us, so we ran away.

The next day at school, I met my old cousin. We discussed the matter for hours and finally, an idea came to us.

Last fall, our family was on our way back from a weekend in the mountains. My brother and I were riding in the back seat of our car. I was looking out of my window when suddenly I saw a dog standing by itself on the side of the road. I shouted at my dad, and he made a U-turn to go back and see if the dog was all right.

We got out of the car, walked up to this cold, damp spot (潮湿的地方) and found out there wasn't just one dog — there were three and they were puppies (幼犬). Then we discovered another puppy in a box, down below in the ravine (山谷). My dad went to save that puppy. He said that it looked like it was going to die. The poor little thing wouldn't eat any of the treats we gave it, and it was shaking.

My mom, dad, brother and I were full of questions. Who had left these puppies here? Why would anyone do such a terrible thing? What were we going to do with these four little puppies? We knew that we couldn't just leave them. Since we already had two dogs, we wouldn't be able to keep them either — especially four of them!

My mom went back to the car and got a dry box. We carefully placed the puppies in the box, and my mom held them on her lap (大腿部) as we drove to the nearest fire station. Since it was Sunday, the local animal shelter (收容所) was closed. Mom and I walked up to the front door of the station and knocked on the door. A fireman opened the door, and we asked him if they would take care of the puppies until Monday and then take them to the local animal shelter. While we were talking to the fireman who had opened the door, four other firemen had started playing with the puppies. One of the puppies was already running around the fire station. The firemen could tell how worried I was about these lovely little things, and they agreed to keep the puppies until the next day.

Kay Day, an 87-year-old UK woman, loves elephants. But Day, who suffers from dementia(痴呆), rarely leaves her nursing home room and hasn’t seen a real elephant for a really long time. Until now.

Day is so fond of elephants that her room is full of elephant photos and toys. She dreamed of seeing an elephant up close again but never thought it would happen. On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Day’s dream became a reality after her nursing home took her on a special trip to the Whipsnade Zoo.

The nursing home collected money to be able to realize Day’s dream. “Day doesn’t join in many activities and tends to spend quite a lot of time alone,” said the nursing home manager. “So when we sat and discussed wishes, we found out she would love to see an elephant. When we found the Elephant Experience at Whipsnade and contacted them, we said we should make her dream come true!”

Day was so excited about going to the zoo that she marked off the days on her elephant-themed calendar. Day’s carers telephoned her family and asked them to come along on the trip to support her on that exciting day.

Since the Whipsnade Zoo is a protection zoo that is working to protect wildlife as well as connect people with nature, the staff runs a lot of programs including various animal experiences and “Be a Keeper” days.

Day often told people around her that she would like to pet and feed the elephants herself as she did many years before. And she said that the elephants’ trunks (象鼻) are her favourite part of the huge animals. “It’s such a wonderful feeling to have an elephant take some food out of your hand, put it in his trunk, curl (卷起) it up and put it in his mouth, ” she told the reporter when she was interviewed.

During summer vacation when I was twelve, a sawmill (锯木厂) was operating in the woods near our farm. Early each morning, I’d watch the men cut down big trees, saw them into logs, and deliver the logs to the mill.

The logs were dragged by a team of horses named Jack and Billy. They were gentle, and I petted them every chance I got.

One day, Mr. David, the mill owner, said he’d pay me 15 cents a day to bring fresh water to his men. In 1942, that was a lot of money! I said yes.

One afternoon when Jack and Billy were pulling a log up to the mill, a stick injured Jack’s right front hoof (蹄). After Mr. David removed the stick, the horse driver said that the foot should be doctored. But Mr. David said he didn’t have time for that. He said if the horse couldn’t earn his keep, he’d get one that could.

I felt sick inside. Jack and Billy were my best friends! I couldn’t stop thinking about Jack’s foot and what Mr. David had said.

For the rest of the day the team pulled logs from the woods. By nightfall, Jack was limping badly. Mr. David told his crew that the mill would be closed for three days because he’d be away for the Fourth of July. He offered to pay me a dollar to feed and water the horses while he was gone. I quickly agreed.

The next morning, I rode my bike to Mr. David’s barn. I wanted to look at Jack’s hoof. I reached down and grabbed the hair on the back of his leg, as I’d seen Mr. David do, and Jack lifted up his foot so I could see.

The part inside of the big iron shoe looked red and mushy (烂糊的).

I didn’t know anything about medicine, and Mr. David said he wouldn’t pay for a doctor. But if he didn’t earn his keep, Mr. David would get rid of him. But what could I do?
