Recognizing a cat’s emotions from its face is often hard, even for its owners. Now, researchers from Canada’s University of Guelph insist that cats also express emotions on their faces—one just has to learn     1     to interpret them!

For their study, Professors Lee Niel and Georgia Mason surveyed 6,300     2    (volunteer) from 85 countries. The participants     3    (show) the cats’ faces from a series of short videos.

The researchers, who published their findings in the November 2019 issue of Animal Welfare, found that only 13 percent, or 819 participants, were able to read the cats’ emotions     4    (accurate) over 75 percent of the time. Further research showed that the so-called “cat whisperers” were primarily women and veterinarians(兽医), Younger adults also seemed to be able to read the expressions even     5    (well) than older individuals.

9    (find) out if you have what it takes to be a “cat whisperer,” take the fun cat faces quiz     10    (create) by the study’s researchers.

Bill Bryson’s book A Really Short History of Nearly Everything     3    (cover)many different aspects of science, such as what happened to dinosaurs, why the oceans are salty, how heavy the earth is, and a chain of life, genetics, planets, weather, atoms and etc. From his point of view, the Big Bang was the start of     4     universe and it only took less than a second     5    (happen). Filled with countless illustrations and photographs that accompany facts     6     are short and to-the-point, the book gives a rather detailed but short history of the science of the world.

For many science lovers, the book is perfect. Bryson writes in a     7    (humor)manner, but he is very informative. I love the book’s     8    (organize). The vocabulary fits perfectly with the subject matter, and unfamiliar terms     9    (explain)finely. The book has done me and every curious kid burdened by a dull textbook or a brain-dead science teacher a huge favor. It is     10     great significance for a classroom, home school setting, or library.
