Morley Safer has worked in television news for 61 years. He’s spent 46 of those years on his broadcast, longer than anyone else. As a     1     (travel), he holds some sort of record,     2     (take) planes, trains, boats, even bicycles to the ends of the Earth.

When he was 24, a door opened that would change his life. He was hired     3     a television news writer at the CBC, Canada's premier broadcasting network. “Chinese opera art is like a huge sponge,    1       (constant) absorbing, transforming and merging,” says traditional Chinese opera director Li Zhuoqun,     2     is credited with creating a market for traditional opera shows in small theaters across China.

Li Zhuoqun’s first directorial work “Death Do Us Part” is a story     3     (adapt) from the14th-century Chinese classic novel “ Water Margin”. She says that     4     (perform) this classic piece for today’s audience is     5     experiment and a challenge. “We decided to maximize the effect of our vocals and dramatic performances. To Li, traditional opera is “the art of regret” due to the unique charm of live performances. In the 26-year-old Ge Zhichen’s livestream on Douyin, an audience of thousands tunes in to learn about Suzhou Pingtan. Originating in the Ming and early Qing dynasties, Suzhou Pingtan is a traditional music art form     1     (perform) using the Wu dialect popular in the Jiangnan region. In 2006, Suzhou Pingtan     2    (list) as a national intangible culture heritage.

Although Ge was born in a family dedicated to Pingtan for decades, he first never considered becoming an inheritor. He recalled, “I had always wanted to be an actor. When I was 16, my father used a white lie to ‘trick’ me into attending a Pingtan school,     3     I became gradually fascinated by Pingtan,” he said.

Ge said that Pingtan faces     4     unique challenge: to lack of the audience. “The Wu dialect makes Pingtan stand out but also makes     5     inaccessible to a wider audience,” Ge added.
