It was my first job, working as a temporary sales girl during the Christmas rush at Richardson’s, the finest jewelry store in our city.

The job was very important to me. Dad had passed away and Mother and I did not have enough to live on in those hard Depression years. I worked in the diamond department. My duties were to arrange the goods, keep them clean, and run errands (跑腿). It was interesting work that I enjoyed thoroughly.

As Christmas drew near, the days became more rushed, but also more exciting. One afternoon, Miss Allan, the head of the department, asked me to get her the diamond ring from the end showcase. I hurried back, with the ring in my hand when I noticed a man on the other side of the row of showcases. He was tall and in his early thirties. But it was the expression on his face that stopped me. He looked bitter, angry and confused. From his well-cut but worn-out suit, I could tell he was one of thousands trained for jobs they could no longer find. He gazed at the beautiful stones with the despair of a man whose right to earn them had been taken away. I had a sudden feeling of sympathy. But I had other things on my mind and soon forgot about him.

A few minutes later Miss Allan called for me again. This time for the clip (夹子) that went with the ring. The clip was at the very front of the window. I got it. But just as I was backing out, my sleeve caught on the corner of a tray (盘子) of diamonds. The tray started to fall, and six magnificent diamond rings rolled across the floor.

Down on my knees, I collected five rings with the greatest speed and put them in the tray. But I couldn’t find the sixth! I thought it must have slipped through the tiny opening between the showcase and the window. I ran around the counter and looked down. It wasn’t there. Just then, out of the corner of my eyes I saw the tall man moving quietly toward the door of the shop, a few yards away. At that moment I knew that he had the ring. He had been standing at the only spot to which it could have rolled. I reached him just as he got to the door.

One day, some young people from a local rehabilitation (康复) center visited a wildlife park. Tippi, a guide, stood before a cheetah (猎豹). “Her name is Subira. She’s a three-year-old cheetah,” she tole the audience.

All the visitors sitting in the chairs were amazed by the cheetah’s beauty, except a teenage boy, Cory. He pulled a long face and made noises, showing his boredom.

Tippi continued, “The cheetah is the fastest animal on earth.” “Aren’t you, honey?” She asked in a cheerful tone, looking at the cheetah lying atop a tree. Giving Subira a dirty look, Cory replied, “Oh, just a skinny cat. Next! Bring out the stupid tigers or whatever so we can get this over with!” However, the cheetah gently looked at Cory and make a happy sound. “I think she likes you,” Tippi told Cory. “I don’t care,” the boy just replied.

What had happened to Cory? Why was he so angry? The boy had dreamed of someday playing Major League Baseball and having many fans. He knew he had a promising future. That was before the car accident. In it, he lost his leg and also lost his hope, joy and spirit. He felt useless and hopeless.

Now he sat in a wheelchair, angry at the world. He was here today on another “boring field trip” from the rehabilitation program. Suddenly, the creature jumped down. Seeming to show her skills, she immediately ran fast forward. “Oh, she’s so beautiful,” the crowd said.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight(天窗). Sibson was shaken by a clap of thunder before he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly through his two-story wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.

Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to check. He opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt glad because the room had a separate outdoor stairway,” he explained to the media later.

But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was stopped by a wall of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped. Suddenly, a piece of wood fell from the roof. Sharp pain raced through his body as he looked down and found his leg bleeding.

Sibson’s house was three kilometers off the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew calling for help would be fruitless.

Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke alarm struck his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his phone and flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise. That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.

Huggons dialed 911, and the operator warned him not to enter the house. But Huggons said, “There is no way I am going to listen to Sibson scream and die in that fire.”

“Anyone there?” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second floor balcony. He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his breath.

After one more attempt to get inside the house, Huggons gave up and circled around back. The wind parted the smoke just enough for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him.

With the wind fueling the fire, there was no time to waste and the second floor seemed to be falling down in the next minute.

THE TEACHER’S HAND

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment—to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.

But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, weakness and unhappiness. His father died in a car accident and the driver wasn’t turned up yet. When first introduced to the teacher, the tiny shy boy greeted her in a timid tone, with his head down. She felt as if her heart was broken when he hesitated back and forth, glancing now and then at other kids playing games. She promised that she would help him out. As other children played on the playground, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side, one hand in hers. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.

Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
