The successful people you admire are there because they resisted the temptation(诱惑) to quit. So every time you want to quit and take the easy way out, just tell yourself that success doesn't come overnight. The tips below are on how not to give up.
Things don’t get easy just because you switch places. The reality of life is that wherever you go, you’ll always be faced with challenges. It’s better to work on the challenges of something you have already started, rather than quitting and starting on a new set of trials in a new goal.
See the bigger picture. Every time you want to quit, tell yourself that if success were easy, everybody would be successful. Most people quit because they forget to draw the bigger picture when they start on a goal. Some have drawn the bigger picture, but forget it in the face of challenges. Always remember that journeys leading to success are often long and difficult. Take the disappointments you meet along the way and if you fall, stand up, dust yourself off, and get moving.
See success as a journey, not a destination. Success is a result of small and smart choices. If you do this consistently and never quit when the going gets tough, you'll start to see the results of your perseverance. Making smart choices every day starts by taking big tasks and breaking them into smaller units. Working on smaller tasks will help you to see your progress. If you want to read a large book, breaking it into chapters seems more doable than finishing the whole book right away.
Successful people are patient. They understand that progress takes time. For example, if you decide to write a book, writing just two pages a day results in 60 pages a month. That makes over 300 pages in half a year. That’s a very long book by any standards.

When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of different flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than sitting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass, as if a painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.
“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.
“And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”
Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

俗话说:与其诅咒黑暗,不如点亮光明。(It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness),结合你自己或者身边人的一个事例,谈谈你对这句话的理解。
One day, my brother and I were alone in our apartment. The reason was that my parents had both gone for a ball party and had left me in charge of everything. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. All of a sudden, the doorbell rang. Ding-dong! Ding-dong! My younger brother had rushed to the door before I decided to answer the door. We both thought that our parents had come home. As a result, he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside of the house stood a man who wore a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He looked no different from other people and he said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home so he could talk with them.
Without any thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books, which he was selling. I quickly explained to him that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. However, it seemed that he was not willing to follow my advice and he had an intention (意图) to enter our house.
Then, I realized something terrible would happen. As I was about to close the door, he forced his way into (硬闯) our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up (绑上) his hands but I tied in a special way so my brother could untie (解开) himself as we often did. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for something valuable. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside and what’s worse, I did not have the keys.

Mom and I spend mornings cleaning up the dirt that blows into our house. The dirt gets into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. We rarely drive our car because Dad fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor.
When my sister, Faye, and I walk to school, we wear scarfs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay home and help Mom put wet sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in.
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch, Dad headed out to the field to check on the cattle. Faye and I played in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped.
Then Mom shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside, quickly now!” I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust. All the birds flew away. “Faye, go with Mom!” I shouted. “I’ll warn Dad.”
Faye dashed to the house. The storm hit so fast; I hardly saw her climb the porch steps. Fine sand hit my face and the day turned into night immediately. I stumbled (跌跌撞撞地走) over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed for Dad, hoping my voice would lead him back.
The dirt and sand stung (刺) my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I found my way to the car and opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Dad was still out there! I needed to help him find our car.
I found the switch (开关) for the front lights. They gave out some light, but would it be enough for Dad to see them in the thick darkness? I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Dad would hear it. I pushed until I had no more strength in my arms.
