"Breakfast time!" I quickly put on my clothes and rushed down the stairs.

"Come on, we don't want to be late!" My mom said. The aroma (香味) of pancakes filled the kitchen, making the room warm. I looked out of the window. The sun was out, making a warm and bright morning.

"Today's the day, zip lining (高空滑索)!" My dad said, sounding very enthusiastic early this morning.

Today we would go zip lining. The excitement built up inside of me as breakfast went on. After breakfast, we set out in my dad's car. Half way through the ride, the sun grew hot, and the leather on the seats burned my legs. I thought about the trip, how my parents went but not me. It was my first time experiencing something like this. I also thought about my fear of heights, one thing I tried to get rid of multiple times. It got in the way of so many fun activities like roller coaster at Kings Island.

We were basically there by now, the sun still blazing hot. We pulled up to a big sign where our instructor waited for us.

"Hi y'all!" said our instructor cheerfully.

"So, have y'all done this before?"

My parents nodded but I shook my head. Our instructor went over safety instructions while we each put on a safety harness (安全带). I started to get nervous. A never ending roller coaster of excitement and anxiousness built inside of me when I looked down the cliff. My heart skipped a beat when the wind howled, blowing leaves and twigs in the trees. My legs started to shake.

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏) and...” Cheers broke out.

“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.

“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.

“Don't forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”

Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!

The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.

The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.

“Jobie!” Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”

Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.

Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.

When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles started. Before that, they got along great. Laura was always protective of her little brother, and he in turn, was very fond of her.

Maybe it was about needing space or demanding independence. Whatever the reason was, it drove my husband and me crazy. It would start over the smallest of excuses. One minute the house would be quiet, and the next they’d be shouting at one another. And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would have to step in. And there would be a truce...sort of. At least until the next fight. Our once happy home was being turned into a war area.

One night, in hopelessness, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behavior was. We asked them for ideas about how we could regain peace in the family.

We asked each of them to come up with a half dozen appropriate results that we could apply the next time they had a fight.

The following day we were presented with a list of results from each. Some even looked pretty good. Examples: Clean the other person’s room; Do the dishes for the other person; Hug and make up, etc.

We decided to arrange those results around the edge of a board, and then we attached a spinning arrow in the middle. When you gave it a spin, the arrow would finally stop and point to one of the results. Then we hung the board up in the kitchen. We crossed our fingers, and waited.

It was amazing. Just the existence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an immediate calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. But it only took about ten days before peace was destroyed by another battle. So we called them both into the kitchen.

Cheemi was a poor orphan living in Pune. Nobody knew where she had come from. Yet everyone accepted the frail little girl and named her Cheemi — the little sparrow. She helped people by doing odd jobs for them, such as fetching vegetables from the corner shop or looking after babies when their mothers went shopping.

Everybody in the neighbourhood liked Cheemi, except Kaki. Kaki was the richest woman there. Cheemi, in her eyes, was dirty and inferior to her. Therefore, she would not allow Cheemi into her big house. The house was almost like a mansion with big wooden carved doors and huge halls. Surprisingly, the windows of the rooms decorated with beads and curtains, were very small.

Kaki lived with her son, her daughter-in-law Gauri and her little grandson, Chotu. Chotu was a great favourite with the girls. Gauri was a very nice, educated lady and didn’t mind Chotu being carried by others. Kaki, however, never allowed Cheemi to touch Chotu. How Cheemi wished she could play with him!

That year, Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered the city. The water rose fast. There was confusion everywhere. Police vans were trying to help.

When water entered their house, Kaki and Gauri were on the ground floor. Within seconds the water rose. The police persuaded Kaki and Gauri to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and confusion, they forgot that Chotu was sleeping on the first floor!

The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The door to the room was closed but not bolted. Any moment the water could rush in. The women panicked. “Chotu!” they cried. “What’ll happen to our Chotu?”

Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult to crawl (爬) in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take the risk.
