The darkness was gathering as she wobbled(颤颤巍巍)in high heels along the side of the highway. The car had come to an unexpected stop, and like a normal teenager she did the only thing she could think of...get out and walk.

It was cold and late, and home was far away. This could be a long night. If only someone would stop and offer her a ride. She prayed for help and dragged herself forward.

The lights of a truck shone from behind as it approached. “Maybe he will stop,” she hoped. The brake lights flashed on as it stopped. Next instant, the cab door opened. A wordless invitation was extended and she understood. Without hesitation the girl climbed up into the seat and closed the door. Slowly the truck pulled back onto the road and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.

I woke up in a cold sweat, alarmed. Was that a dream or was it a vision? It was unbelievably real, and the girl was my daughter! I jumped from my bed and ran to her room. Her bed was empty.

I stood in horror trying to think why she had not come home. As the mental fog began to lift, I remembered she was visiting her friend that evening. Perhaps she stayed there for the night. It was 1:30 am, but I raced to the phone and dialed a number.

“Hello?” The voice was heavy with sleep.

“Hey. Sorry to wake you. Becki didn’t come home tonight and I was wondering if she stayed at your place?”

“No, she left here a few hours ago. She should have been home at least by midnight!” The voice on the other end began to reflect my own panic.

Over the next forty-five minutes I alternated between lying in pray and pacing the floor in anxiety.

At 2:15 am lights appeared as a car turned up our long driveway. I could tell immediately that it was not my daughter’s car.

I was standing in the bus terminal (终点站),waiting in the line behind a woman who appeared to be in her 50s. She had a tired look on her face, and her shoulders seemed to sag (下弯) under the weight of her bags. I looked around, finding there seemed nobody feeling interested in the woman except me.

My heart went out to her. Without hesitation, I stepped forward and offered to help her with her bags. She looked at me with surprise, but then nodded gratefully.

As we walked to the waiting area, I struck up a conversation with her. I asked her where she was going and if there was anything I could do to make her journey easier. She told me that her husband died in an accident several months ago, which was a severe blow to the family. Her son was so depressed because of the sudden change and spent all day drinking alcohol and doing nothing. Now she was traveling alone to visit her sick daughter in another city and was feeling overwhelmed with worry and tiredness.

I could understand her well, and I couldn’t help thinking of myself and my family. A year ago, during my first year in the company, I struggled to find my footing (立足点). The rules were unfamiliar, the work was challenging, and I had difficulty recognizing my own worth. I often questioned whether I would be able to make it through each day, as my father was gone, my mother was unemployed, and my young brother was only seven years old, relying on me for support. Fortunately, since I received a badge (徽章) from my little brother, things began taking a positive turn. The words on it had been a source of encouragement for me, and I kept the badge in my purse wherever I went.

Jimmy loved ice cream. It was his favorite dessert. He wanted to eat ice cream all the time. His parents let him have a small dish each night after dinner, if he ate all of his vegetables. At home, Jimmy usually had chocolate. His mother spooned it out of the carton (硬纸盒) and into his bowl.

Jimmy liked eating ice cream at home, but he really loved going to the ice cream stand to get an ice cream cone. There were so many different flavors to try. Jimmy always did his best to try a new kind of ice cream each time.

When Jimmy turned eight, he had a checkup at the doctor’s office. Dr Katz said that ice cream wasn’t a very healthy snack. “It’s fine to have a little ice cream once in a while, but not every night,” she said.

After the doctor’s visit, Jimmy and his mom drove home. “Can I still have ice cream for dessert tonight?” Jimmy asked.

“I don’t think so, honey,” Mom said. “We should all try to be healthier.”

That night at supper, Jimmy ate all his vegetables. But there was no ice cream for dessert. Instead, Mom came up with a new rule. “If we want to eat ice cream, we’ll have to earn it by walking to the ice cream stand,” she said. Jimmy was willing to give it a try, so they decided to take their walk on Saturday afternoon. According to the map, the ice cream stand was a mile away.

Saturday was a hot and sunny day. Jimmy began to feel sweaty. The sun was so bright that he had to squint (眯着眼). He kept his eyelids (眼皮) almost all the way closed, with just a small crack to stretch out of. “I’m hot,” said Jimmy. “How much farther is it?”

My husband camped every summer as he was a child. He was feeling homesick for camping, so after we got married, he invited me to join him. Since then, we have had wonderful camping experiences.

With a tent, we set off for California’s Big Sur Coast. On the first night, I stayed awake, worrying that a gang of naughty little creature would break into our tent and dive into our snacks. By the second night, my imagination calmed down and I started to get the hang of it. And by the third day, I was hooked. It was refreshing and relaxing to stay close to nature. We’ve been camping ever since. Of course, later, with our children.

We made wonderful family camping memories for the past years: Songs and talent shows by the campfire under the stars. Meals beneath a canopy of trees. Hikes to lakes and waterfalls. Some of our memories are funny, while some are a little adventurous, especially when our children were little.

Once, when we camped along Chalk Creek, I was fascinated by the stunning beauty that surrounded us. But, I was worried that our 15-month-old boy would fall into the creek (小溪). Though its maximum depth was about two inches, I wasn’t about to take chances. I tied a rope around his waist to keep him near to our spot. That lasted about ten minutes. He was uncomfortable, his crying letting the whole campground know it. So instead of tying him up, I just kept a close eye on him. It worked — he didn’t end up in the creek.

Another time, we rented a boat in Vallecito Lake. The sky was clear when we headed off, but storms moved in fast in the mountains, quickly interrupting our peaceful morning trip. The wind picked up and thunder rolled. My husband stopped fishing to start the motor. Nothing. He tried again. No luck.
