In many countries, people work five eight-hour days or 40 hours a week. But some companies now want their employees to work just four days a week and still pay them for five. Is it too good to be true?
Planio, a German company, offered a four-day week to its employees earlier this year Schulz-Hofen, the founder of Planio, first tested the four-day workweek on himself. He said,“It is much healthier and we do a better job if we’re not working crazy hours. I didn't get less work done in four days than in five because in five days, you think you have more time, you take longer. ” Also, another company, called Guardian in New Zealand, tested how its employees reacted to a 32-hour workweek earlier this year. It said the workers reported feeling less pressured and more focused on the business.
In Japan, the government is urging companies to let their workers have Monday mornings off. And in the UK, Trades Union Congress (TUC) is pushing for the country to move to a four-day week by the end of the century, thinking that a shorter workweek is a way for workers to share in the wealth made by new technologies like machine learning and robotics. TUC’s Kate Bell noted,“It would reduce the stress of juggling working and family life. ’’
A study of 3, 000 employees found that nearly half thought they could easily finish their work in five hours a day if they did not have to stop and restart. The workers were from eight countries, including the United States,Britain and Germany. Dan Schawbel, working in Future Workplace, which carried out the survey with Kronossaid,“Because you always have the technology, you are always working, so you are getting burned out. He expects more companies and countries will permit a four-day workweek.

The comfortable lifetime position comes with a generous starting monthly pay of 21,564 SEK ($2,320), a guaranteed (有保证的) yearly pay increase of 3.2 percent, and even vacation time.
The position was put forward by Swedish artists Simon Goldin and Jakob Senneby in answer to a design competition for the Korsvagen train station, which is now under construction and planned to open in 2026. Instead of presenting an artistic design, Goldin and Senneby suggested using the 7,000,000 SEK ($753,000) prize money to hire a lifetime employee to do nothing! Surprisingly, the unusual idea appealed to the judges of the competition, who adopted the suggestion and announced their decision to carry out the Eternal (终生的) Employment Project.
The job only requires the lucky employee to arrive at the station each morning and ring the clock, which will turn on a bank of bright lights. The person can remain at the station all day —greeting passengers, texting friends, or even sleeping — or leave and return at the end of the day to clock out.
The job is guaranteed for life as long as he/she obeys these simple requirements and does not accept any other employment. Though the job sounds like a waste of life, the artists believe the employee will be doing important work to act as a witness (见证) of time.
The best part is that people from all over the world can apply to be considered for this unique position equally — be sure not to miss it!

The legislation requires waste producers to pay into the system themselves or through their suppliers that is what the government termed, a “polluter pays” principal. Businesses will have to change their waste processing before the tax comes into play. This is similar to the anti-waste legislation passed in France in February 2020 that prohibits the destruction(销毁)of unsold clothing, cosmetics, hygiene products and electrical products. Companies will have to reuse,or recycle the items.
Dealing with waste is a global problem and we must deal with the over 2 billion metric tons of solid waste generated every year. The World Bank estimates that overall waste will increase to 3.4 billion tons if nothing is done to change the situation.
The demand for legislation like the tough attitude the UK is taking has been increasing according to Positive News. And it is not just environmental groups calling for the changes. This is a consumer driven movement and people are willing to pay more for sustainable brands. Josh Bowden,co-founder of Noissue told Positive News.
What is absolutely certain is that local governments will save a lot of money as the responsibility shifts to the polluters. That could be better invested in things like social care or parks or libraries.” Other countries have made great progress in reducing waste. Sweden's recycling program is so efficient that the country is running out of trash. The recycling rate is almost 99 percent and they are rapidly approaching zero waste. Today, large companies are greening their brands and moving to sustainable packaging including Colgate,Waitrose,Nestle, and Unilever which now has recyclable black packaging. The government of the UK hopes that other companies will follow their example. A partnership between government legislation and private companies will go a long way to reducing the tons of waste going into our environment every year. Laws like the ones in the UK and France can be implemented around the world.

When 800 new high schoolers graded their feelings of worry on a scale (量表) of one to ten, one quarter said seven or more, suggesting serious stress (压力). Disturbingly, these uneasy youth were the most likely to cut classes, start smoking or even get involved in (卷入) self-harm, according to McGill University researcher Dr. Nancy Heath, who has studied the students for three years.
Luckily, there’s a good cure for your high schooler’s worries — volunteering. Parents are already struggling with over-scheduled kids, but the mental-health benefits of this particular after-school activity are widely recognized. “There’s clear evidence (证据) that doing something for others can help people manage stress,” Heath says. The biggest benefit is making new friends. High school is a social minefield (雷区). Teens struggling to find new friends can feel lonely.
They need a back-up social scene outside the classroom, Heath suggests. “Volunteering and getting involved gives a sense of community and belonging.” Team sports and some hobbies are social, but they can’t match the other benefits of volunteering. Serving food in a soup kitchen or chatting with lonely old people forces a teenager to focus on the needs of others, instead of thinking about their own worries.
We’ve found that, among youth who volunteer through our service programs, 61 percent report feeling increased self-respect. They’re 1.3 times more likely to have a strong sense of self than their peers (同龄人), and are more comfortable adapting to (适应) changes, according to an independent study by research firm Mission Measurement.
This winter, encourage the new high school student in your house to find a cause they’re interested in and get involved. It won’t help them find their locker, but it will ease the stress.

Eco City Farm in Edmonston, Maryland, is located near shopping centers, car repair shops and homes. The neighborhood is a working-class community. People do not have very much money, and they have limited access to fresh food in markets. Over the past two years, the farm has attracted volunteers from the community like Marcy Clark. She schools her four children at home. On a recent day she brought them to Eco City Farm for a lesson. Margaret Morgan Hubbard started Eco City Farm. She thinks of it as a place where people can learn to live healthier lives. “Growing food in a community and showing that you can have farms even in the city is helpful to strengthen the relationship in that community and brings people together,” she says. “Every piece of what we do here is a demonstration to show people everything about how to have a sustainable community.” From the Eco City Farm people come to know that they are not only growing food and raising chickens and bees, but improving the soil with compost made from food waste. Sixteen wooden bins are filled with worms. Their job is to eat the food waste and help make it into compost.
Eco City Farm is an experimental operation. The farm gets its power not from the local electricity networks but from the sun with solar panels. It has been suggested that the breeding pair should be rented to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) for 10 years and it is hoped they would give birth to babies during that time. Edinburgh Zoo would be the eighth zoo in the West to care for the species if the project goes ahead.
Zoo chiefs said that looking after the endangered animals could benefit conservation. David Windmill, chief of RZSS, said, “It is an opportunity to work on a global level with other conservationists to gain a better understanding of the giant panda, the threats they face, and what we can do to ensure their survival.”
At present, there are currently only around 1,500 giant pandas in the wild. RZSS has been working on the project for almost a year, and hopes to have giant pandas at Edinburgh Zoo by 2011, the year of the society’s centenary.
Mr. Windmill said that the project has received strong support from the UK and Scottish Governments and that this must continue if the zoo is to reach an agreement with the Chinese. As part of the proposed agreement with the Chinese government, Edinburgh Zoo will cooperate on research projects benefiting conservation in the wild.

Lei Haiwei kept calm during the final of the Third Season of CCTVs Chinese Poetry Competition on Wednesday night, becoming the champion after defeating Peng Min, a master of literature from China's top university.
Lei, 37, from Shaoyang, Hunan Province, is now working as a food delivery man in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. His interest in poetry was inspired by his father, who would write poems down, stick them on the wall of the kitchen and teach him to read them from a young age.
Lei missed the opportunity of going to university due to frequent school transfers when he was growing up. But that didn't diminish his passion for poetry. Since he was too poor to buy books, Lei would memorize poems in bookstores and write them out when he returned home. He used this unique method to accumulate more than 1,000 poems.

Even so, he seized any available moment to recite poems. "For example, I am used to reciting poems when I wait for food at restaurants, and traffic lights on my way to deliver food. Reciting poems not only enriches my knowledge, but also makes my job less boring," the courier said.
Last November, Lei went to Beijing and began recording the TV show after standing out from more than 70,000 people who signed up for the competition. After winning, Lei returned to Hangzhou and continues his delivery work and the memorizing of poems.

Videos on the social networking platform Douyin—also know globally as TikTok—that show men and women with perfect physiques working out or giving fitness tips are commonplace. Trying to stand out from millions of such videos can often be difficult, but a relatively new account, which has only been active since last year, has managed to do so easily.
The fitness instructor behind this account is not a young woman with a slim, toned figure that would leave viewers green with envy. The star here is 70-year-old Chen Jifang, a Shanghai resident with 3 million likes on her Douyin videos. She was once even featured on a reality show on China Central Television.
According to her trainer, who helped to manage the Douyin account, Chen attracted more than 400,000 followers within just a few months. "The main group that I wanted to encourage was people ages 30 to 50," says Chen. "I think they will be motivated to work out in the gym after seeing that a granny like me can. The message I want to convey is that it is never too late to pursue good health."
While most people would be concerned about having an elderly family member perform such intensive workouts in the gym, Chen has the full support of her family. Her husband shows his support by doing most of the housework. Her daughter, on the other hand, helps to pick her gym attire(运动服装).
Chen may be a star in her own right, but she is also just one of many elderly citizens in China's major cities who are embracing exercise.

Worldwide, up to five million people catch the illness each flu season, and around a quarter of a million die from it. Part of its power comes from the fact that the virus changes so quickly that the body is hardly prepared. “The antibodies we’ve built up no longer recognize the virus – so we lose our immunity,” says Jane Metz at the University of Bristol. It also makes it harder to develop effective vaccines, and even if one comes out, governments often fail to persuade enough people to take it up.
The hope is that by understanding better why flu spreads in winter, but naturally fades in summer, doctors could find simple measures to stop its spread.
Previous theories had centred on our behaviour. We spend more time indoors in the winter, meaning that we’re in closer contact with other people who may be carrying germs.
Another popular idea concerned our physiology(生理机制): the cold weather weakens your body’s defenses against infection. In winter, without much sunlight, we may run low on Vitamin D, which helps power the body’s immune system. Moreover, when we breathe in cold air, the blood vessels in our nose shrink, which affects the normal function of white blood cells, allowing viruses to slip past our defenses unnoticed.
While such factors both play some role, analyses suggested another ignored cause may have been lying invisible in the air that we breathe. Thanks to the laws of thermodynamics(空气热力学), cold air can carry less water vapor before it reaches the “dew point” and falls as rain. So while the weather outside may seem wetter, the air itself is drier as it loses the moisture. And researches in the past few years has shown that these dry conditions seem to offer the perfect environment for the flu virus to flourish.
In wetter air, the epidemic struggles to build strength, while in drier conditions it spreads like wildfire. And comparing 30 years’ climate records with health records, Jeffrey Shaman at Columbia University found that flu epidemics almost always followed a drop in air humidity.

This eating performance has rapidly spread its influence to some Asign countries such as Japan and China where it became popular. In China, mukbang is' called “chibo”, in which mukbangers make their content into short videos and vlogs and upload them onto huge social media platforms like Weibo.

To discourage this practice, many video and live- streaming platforms, including Douyin, Kuaishou and Bilibili, have removed videos that show food waste.
People in China have realized the need for safeguarding food security and halting food waste. In Shanxi province, local restaurants have been asked to serve half portions to avoid waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed that restaurants adopt the“N-1 mode”. For example, a group of 10 diners should only order enough for nine people at first.
