About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching(把……重新连上) it to the keyring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.

The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched, even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.

Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.

But there was a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't have confidence in actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choices did I have?

My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is one of the biggest holes on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.

I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest!

I pulled the car into the garage and got out, just like every night for the past 16 years. The difference was that I wouldn’t have a job to take in the morning. I used to be a VP in technology for a national bank until it was closed.

I’d put my heart and soul into my job. Not only did I work long hours, but I was on call 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. My kids joked that, though they were the teenagers, I was the one who was glued to the cellphone and had to be told not to text at the dinner table.

My wife, Michelle, went back to work fulltime once my job was threatened. But our kids would be going to college—our son, TJ, was a high school senior, and the girls, Sarah and Tara, were in ninth grade—and I wanted to give them the education and opportunities they deserved. God, if I can’t provide for my family, I asked, what good am I?

A ray of light streamed through the window, as if beckoning(召唤) me. I opened the door and stepped out into our yard. The lawn, the maple tree planted when I was young and the flower beds were overrun with weeds. They needed pruning(修剪).

Treasure this time. The thought came out of nowhere. But clear, clear as it could be, I shook my head. I couldn’t get distracted by random thoughts. The clock was ticking. I needed to get busy finding a new job.

I went up to the house. “I’m sorry, Dad,” TJ said. “I know how much your job meant to you.” His concern was mirrored in the girls’ faces. Then Michelle added, “It’s going to be okay. We’ll get through this together. Maybe you should consider this time as a break. You deserve one.”

A break? Was she kidding? There was no time to rest. If anything, I needed to work even harder.

Paragraph 1

The next morning I got up before everyone else and opened my laptop.

Nick had a difficult childhood, with neither mom nor dad giving him love because his parents died when he was ten. Now he was 27 years old. He had no friends around. As for his work, delivering newspapers couldn’t support his family. He had a wife, Kara Lewis, but he did not know exactly how to get along with her. His life was in a mess and he couldn’t see his future.

That night, Nick had a quarrel with his wife and he’d stormed out of their apartment, leaving his phone behind so she couldn’t contact him. Then he drove the car and smoked in the parking lot; he liked to go there when he needed to be alone. Looking up at the stars, he sat in silence for 15 minutes or so. Then he decided to head home.

He was on the way back to the apartment just after the midnight when he saw the house on fire. Flames were climbing up the front porch, lapping at the home’s walls. Hurrying out of the vehicle, he immediately regretted not having his phone. “Hey, help, the house is on fire!” he yelled into the night. Nobody responded. He ran around to the back door. To his amazement, it swung open. Without thinking about the danger, Nick dashed into the burning building.

It was a two-story house where Walter family lived with two daughters,18-year-old Kay and 2-year-old Sally. That night the parents were not at home, with their 18-year-old daughter taking care of Sally.

The curtains were melting as Nick ran through the hallway of the burning house, peering into rooms that were in flames and searching to see if anyone was home. Just then, one face emerged from a room at the top of the stairs and peered down at him, her eyes wide. “Your house is on fire. You need to go!” Nick yelled, hurrying her out of the house. After they were out into the fresh air, Nick heard the girl kept screaming, “There’s a baby in there! I couldn’t find her in the bedroom.”

“Is this all I got?“ asked my daughter, Allison. “I asked for a new cell phone and a laptop!”

“Where are the rest of the presents?” asked my son, Blake.“I wanted a set of golf clubs and a skateboard!"

Money had been tight, and as a single parent, I was doing the best I could. My children received almost everything on their wish lists when their father was alive, but things were different now. Blake was now thirteen years old and Allison twelve. I knew we had somewhat spoiled(宠坏) them. My feelings were hurt, but I didn’t want to show it. I was also very disappointed in their reactions to their presents.

The months went by quickly. I was planning our next Christmas celebration in my head a little every day, for I was determined to teach them a lesson.

I contacted agencies to find a family that desperately needed help. They were a low-income family, and my children needed to know they existed and what they had to go through.

That Christmas we did all the usual traditions, such as putting up a tree. But as Christmas Eve drew closer, there were still no presents under the tree.

I said that we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them. They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and food. I went on to explain my disappointment in their previous actions and words.

We went shopping that weekend and bought gifts for all the children. We purchased gloves, hats, socks, shoes and coats for them. Then, we picked out age appropriate toys. We bought three toys for each child. Next, we needed coats, hats, gloves, socks and shoes for the adults. We purchased everything they would need for a nice Christmas dinner and then picked out some things to help them get through the winter.

It was the day before Christmas Eve, and the day we would deliver the food and gifts. After having breakfast, we set off.
