My grandfather is an     1    (intelligence) and retired worker. On summer evenings, we often sat together outside the house enjoying the cool air. It     2    (be) the first time that he had told me lots of his experiences.

My grandfather said they weren’t let out at once. If so, they would have died. They were kept at    9     entrance to the tunnel where it was very dim, and they were fed on some thin porridge. After a day or two, they had made a full     10    (recover).

A father,     1     son was 16 years old, was worried because his son had no courage at all. So the father made his     2     (determine) to call on a Buddhist monk (和尚) to train his boy.

The Buddhist monk said to the boy’s father     3     (firm), “You should leave your son alone here. I’ll make him into a real man within three     4    (month). However, you are not allowed     5     (come) to see him during this period.”

The deadline was due and the boy’s father returned. The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and     6     experienced boxer. Each time the fighter struck the boy, he fell down, but at once the boy stood up. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, “What do you think of your child?”

“What a shame!” the boy’s father said. “I never     7    (think) in the past that he would be knocked down so easily. I won’t have him left here any     8    (long).”

“I’m sorry that that’s all you see. Didn’t you see that each time he     9    (strike) down, he stood up again instead     10     crying on the floor? That’s the kind of courage a real man should have.”
