Swimming and English Learning

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.

Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.

Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.

Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.

Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.

Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.

【推荐1】“Buffalo, buffalo, Buffalo, buffalo, buffalo, buffalo, Buffalo, buffalo’’ is a real sentence.

How?

Let's break it down, starting with simple phrase.

Monkeys from Pisa bully deer from London.

Ok, admittedly, it's an impossible scenario, but it is a grammatically fine sentence. In English, we can use place names as adjective, so let's shorten the sentence a little.

Pisa monkeys bully London deer.

Now we'll throw in some giraffes from Paris to even the score with those mean monkeys.

Pisa monkeys, whom Paris giraffes intimidate, bully London deer.

English is peculiar in that you can omit relative pronouns, e.g., “ the person whom I love’’ can be expressed as ‘’the the person I love.’’ Let’s do that to this sentence.

Pisa monkeys Paris giraffes intimidate bully London deer.

This kind of pronoun removal can be a little more dedicate to grasp when written than when spoken. Saying the above sentence with pauses after monkeys and intimidate can help. Now we need to replace both of the verbs, intimidate and bully, with their (admittedly uncommon) synonym, buffalo.

Pisa monkeys Paris giraffes buffalo buffalo London deer.

Again, pauses help keep the meaning in mind: Put a pause after monkeys and the first buffalo. Now we'll replace all the worldwide place names with the second-largest city in New York State, Buffalo.(That’s Buffalo’s tallest building, One Seneca Tower, below.)

Buffalo monkeys Buffalo giraffes buffalo buffalo Buffalo deer.

You can probably guess what the next step is. But before we replace all the animals with the common name for the American bison, note how the capital letters in the above sentence help you keep the place names separate from the other usages of the word. Ok, here goes:

Buffalo, buffalo, Buffalo, buffalo, buffalo, buffalo, Buffalo, buffalo.

One last thing to note: This exceptional sentence is possible because the plural of the animal buffalo is buffalo, not buffalos, otherwise all the words wouldn’t be identical.

1. How should we read the following sentence with proper pauses?
A.Buffalo buffalo Buffalo / buffalo buffalo /buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
B.Buffalo Buffalo /Buffalo buffalo buffalo / buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
C.Buffalo buffalo Buffalo / buffalo buffalo buffalo / Buffalo buffalo.
D.Buffalo buffalo /Buffalo buffalo / buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
2. What’s the key element to make this sentence possible?
A.The relative pronouns in English can be omitted.
B.In English, place names can be used as adjectives.
C.The city has the same name with a kind of American bison.
D.The word buffalo has the same form of singular and plural.
3. Where can you probably find this article?
A.Wandering the Earth
B.Linguistics Around Us
C.Popular Animal Science
D.Collins English Grammar

The central principle of the Babbel language learning approach is that people should spend about 15 minutes per day studying a new language. This is surprisingly short compared to the length of time that university students are expected to use to study a language nightly (about 90 minutes) .     1    I sat down with Babbel's language expert, Karohine Schnur, to find out how 15-minute language lessons are all you need to become fluent in a new language.

Karoline started off by explaining the central principle behind the Babbel learning approach. "If you read a lot of information, you won't be able to absorb everything, "she said.     2     The background information is thrown away, and never goes into our long-term memory. But it s not so great for language learning. “     3    Repetition is really important in language learning,” Karoline added.

Because repetition is so important, the Babbel app (应用程序)is quite useful in learning a new language. It has a Review Manager that's designed entirely for repeating information and getting it into your long-term memory. When talking about the rationality (合理性)behind this approach, Karoline explained, "It's based on time intervals.     4     ”When using the app, you' ll notice that items come up for review not only right after a lesson is completed, but in the days and weeks that follow. She continued, "If you keep getting it correct, the time until you see it again expands. After all those steps are done,we say, ‘    5     ' " In this way, Babbel isn't just helping you memorize vocabulary, but truly learn a language.

A.OK, this is in your long-term memory.
B.How much do you remember after a week?
C.It's designed with the limitations of human memory in mind.
D.So how are people at Babbel picking up new languages in so less time?
E.Each time you repeat something and get it correct, it will move up a step.
F.To get something into long-term memory, you must make connections and repeat it.
G.The brain is a master at deciding what information is important and what is background noise.

【推荐3】When learning English, most people felt uncomfortable about speaking. They could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. Here are some ideas that are from some people’s experience.

Don’t worry about making mistakes.     1     Actually, other people will still know your meaning and they probably won’t notice your mistakes.

Use every chance you get to speak.     2    For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class and not to speak to your classmates in your own language. At home, you should also try practicing new words and grammar learnt in class.

Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join a conversation group, such as the chat groups in the study centre.    3     Or you can go to the English Corner and speak English with others.

4     With the development of Internet, online study provides us with more chances to study English. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.

Be confident to speak aloud. Many people are shy and they can’t speak English with confidence. However, language is a tool for us to express and make others understand us. We just need to speak what we want to express, and not take much care about others’ opinions.     5

A.They are free to join.
B.Practice speaking online.
C.There are many clubs in the school.
D.Listening to English songs is a good way.
E.It’s good for you to take the chance to speak English.
F.Making mistakes is normal when learning a language.
G.I’m sure you can feel a lot more confident without thinking too much.
