How we look and how we appear to others probably worry us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to     1     the trends of fashion.

Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation without     2    . Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress. A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did. The advertisers show us the latest     3     styles and we are     4     under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull.

What causes fashions to change?   Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can     5     a fashion. Take hats, for example. In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a(n)     6     in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example.

Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like in stead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The     7     of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashions of the top fashion houses.

At the same time, appearance is still important in certain circumstances and then we must choose our clothes     8    . It would be foolish to go to an interview for a job in a law firm wearing jeans and a sweater; and it would be     9     to visit some distinguished scholar looking as if we were going to the beach or a night club. However, you need never feel depressed if you don’t look like the     10    fashion photo. Look around you and you’ll see that no one else does either!

The Best Company to Work For

Every year, Fortune magazine publishes a list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For”. Howdoes the magazine choose the companies? Firstly, it uses a survey: 350 employees answer 57 questions about their company. Secondly, Fortune looks at important     1     of companies: for example, pay, benefits, and communication between workers and management. Finally, the magazine must     2       the results to find its Top 100.

Wegmans Food Markets, which ranks No. 1 on the list, has a motto (座右铭) , “Employees first, customers second”, and it is also one of the 50 largest private companies in the US, with annual sales of $3. 6 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Apparently, being good to your employees is no     3     to making money.

How much of Wegmans’ success is due to the company’s policies? “Up to a point, the success is because of the freedom they give us,” says one employee. “On the other hand, no company gets rich just by not being     4     to its employees. Wegmans has great marketing strategies and it’s     5     within the community. I’ve been here for 15 years. Looking back, I’d say that the company’s     6     for customers’ benefits, such as the Shoppers’ Club electronic discount programme in the 1990s, have been just as important as the benefits to staff.”

But the employee benefits are     7    . Fundamentally, Wegmans believes in     8     development. As well as scholarships, the company gives its employees business opportunities. For years, one employee made delicious cookies for her colleagues. She     9     started selling the cookies in Wegmans. ‘I just asked the manager,’ she says. ‘While looking back, I think I should have asked earlier. I could have made more money!’

The staff’s freedom to make decisions is another thing you won’t find everywhere. Essentially, Wegmans wants its workers to do almost anything to     10     the customers. Believe it or not, an employee once cooked a Thanksgiving turkey in the store for a customer because the woman’s turkey, bought in Wegmans, was too big for her oven.

The best bosses know how to subtract work

Companies are used to celebrating addition. Profits, customers and share prices should go up rather than fall. Innovation is the adding of new products. Larger numbers are a measure of career success.

Firms are not always opposed to subtraction. There are good kinds of cuts. Reducing costs is a necessary part of management, though not a welcome one. But the value of doing less is     1    . The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on.

That means     2     time for employees to get work done. Meetings are almost always called by bosses. Some are useful; many of them are not.

Shopify, an e-commerce firm, began the year by deleting 12,000 meeting s from corporate calendars, and asking everyone to think carefully before     3     them. The company reports a rise in productivity as a result of the     4    .

The only thing worse than having too many meetings is not being invited to them at all. So whenever meetings take place,     5     large numbers of people can turn up. Minus-minded managers will give employees permission not to attend if they are not needed.

Good bosses,     6    , will send messages when necessary, not every time a bright idea pops into their head. They will reduce the tempo of work, by leaving employees time to concentrate. They will be clear if something is urgent or not.

Subtraction is not just about removing day-to-day distractions. It’s also about taking decisions to kill off projects and products that are going nowhere, and to focus efforts on the most important bits of the business.

In “The Case for Good Jobs”, a new book, Zeynep Ton of MIT Sloan School of Management argues that doing less can often make     7     sense. Costco, a well-regarded American retailer has a deliberately limited product     8    . That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively.

Less may not sound like a great outcome for customers, but at some point choice is deeply     9    . When you have spent more time trying to decide what to watch on a streaming service than it takes to go to the cinema and watch “Oppenheimer” twice,     10     seems pretty attractive.

Food Waste in the Netherlands

Uneaten bread, yellowed vegetables, overcooked rice or noodles are all thrown away by the Dutch, which is a problem in the Netherlands. In 2010, each person there threw away about 48 kilograms of food per year,     1     with 41 kilograms in 2016, a slight improvement.

A food industry expert says the problem in the Netherlands is that everyday food is so cheap that people     2     have no idea. But don’t forget that a family throws away 50 Euros worth of food every month, that is, 600 Euros a year, and that adds up to a lot of money, doesn’t it? He offers a number of tips on how to deal with     3     food waste. For example, take your shopping list to the supermarket so you can cut down unnecessary food     4    . As far as cooking is concerned, do as much as you can eat. “So if you’re measuring for four people, don’t take it for granted, but use a measuring cup to measure it     5    ,” he said. “We waste a lot of rice and cooked pasta. Turn the refrigerator to 4 degrees instead of 6 or 7 degrees. So you can keep the food longer. If you have a lot left-over after dinner, you can     6     it and just put it in the microwave one day a week. It’s easy and it saves money.”

In recent years, the Netherlands has taken many measures to deal with food waste. For example, since its launch in January 2018, it has used an APP called Too Good to Go, which allows hotels, supermarkets and bakeries to     7     how much food they have left each day, and nearby consumers can use the APP to find out where they can pay a small amount of money for the leftover food. The Grand, a five-star hotel in Amsterdam, is also     8    . “In the past, we threw out all the cheese, sandwiches, meat and other products from the breakfast buffet (自助餐), and it was a     9     waste,” said a staff member, “Now we don’t waste so much, so this application is really a good     10    .” The idea for the APP came from Denmark, and the application is now up and running in nine countries.
