Animals

The park is home to 540 kinds of animals. Among them are Hainan gibbons (长臂猿), one of the world’s most endangered species. Hainan gibbons look like monkeys, but they have no tails. They usually eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 kinds of plants, mostly in treetops 15 meters above the ground.

Plants

The park is a “live museum” of plants. More than 3,600 kinds of wild plants grow there. It is also home to 133 kinds of national key protected plants. Cycas hainanensis is an example. It has big, feather-like leaves. It grows slowly, but can live up to 200 years. This ancient species probably was around when dinosaurs lived on earth.

Culture

The Li and Miao ethnic (民族的) groups have lived in the park for generations, mainly in the central Wuzhishan area. From their houses to their clothes, you can taste their culture. Li and Miao people live in houses that look like upside-down boats. To keep away animals like snakes and ants, they build their houses above the ground.

Day 1 Take a boat trip to Tambopata National Reserve

You’ll first have breakfast in Inkaterra Hacienda Conception. After some free time, we’ll travel along the Madre de Dios river by boat to meet the wildlife in the Tambopata National Reserve, as well as some other animals at the Sandoval Lake. In the glow of sunset, we’ll return to where we live and some nocturnal (夜间活动的) animals may show up.

Day2 Fly to Cusco for a tour

A driver will send you to the airport for your onward flight to Cusco. Our guide and our driver will wait for you at the Cusco Airport and take you to Sonesta Hotel. The first attraction during the Cusco tour is the Plaza de Armas. Next, we’ll have a look at the Qorikancha (the Temple of Sun) which features both the Inca culture and the Spanish colonial culture. Then, we’ll head for the Sacsayhuaman to appreciate the well-known stone walls.

Day 3 Explore Machu Picchu

As the relics of the Inca Empire, Machu Picchu has been listed as a world heritage (遗产) for its architecture among the mountains. During the two-hour visit, our guide will tell you more about its history. Later, you need to walk to the top of the Huayana Picchu on your own to overlook the Machu Picchu. Remember to bring some snacks for lunch in advance. Then, you need to take the return bus to Aguas Calientes and walk to the hotel yourself.

Day4 Visit Floating Islands and Taquile Island

Our guide will accompany you to take a motorboat to the Uros Islands. Since the islands were built on the floating reeds (芦苇), they are also called the Floating Islands, through which you can know more about the Uros people’s life. After another three-hour boat ride, we’ll reach the Taquile Island. A family visit with a simple lunch there is arranged.

【推荐1】April will bring a new product — the Apple Watch — into the market. Last week, the watch was firstly introduced by Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. The price of the watch will differ from $349 to $1,099, depending on its size, strap and whether it is a sports or regular style.

Apple engineers and designers have put in a lot of thought and hard work into creating this “small screen” on your wrist. The “sensor” on the screen not only detects your finger, but knows the difference between when you are tapping, and when you are pressing harder.

The watch also has “haptic feedback”. You can send personal messages to your friend - such as drawing a star or a special sign with your fingers, or tapping the watch, say 3 times, and your friend will receive those taps on their wrist.

Besides telling the time, the watch will use Bluetooth to connect with your iPhone and show calls or text messages that come in.

According to Tim Cook, the watch may open up a whole new area of applications that we had never thought of. Some car factories like BMW have developed an app that allows its car owners to open their cars with the watch. A Hotels’ app may allow you to open the door to your hotel room without worrying about losing the smart-card. And finally, even airlines are jumping in - passengers may be able to simply wave their wrist to check into their flight.

The biggest use of the watch, however, is as your personal fitness coach. The watch can measure your pulse (heartbeat) using a sensor at the bottom of the watch. It also has the same “accelerometer” as your iPhone, so it knows when you are moving, and also how much you are walking or running. It will remind you if you have been sitting for too long without much activity.

Many stores are planning to stop selling FitBit devices(设备) to welcome the Apple Watch. Will Apple Watch really replace these devices and make fitness much more fun?

【推荐3】When Mexican scientist of the evolution of animal behavior, Laura Cuaya, moved to Hungary for her postdoctoral studies in Budapest, she brought her pet dog, Kun-kun, along for the ride. Cuaya couldn't help noticing how locals warmed to dogs. This prompted her naturally curious scientific mind to start asking questions. “Here people are talking all the time to Kun-kun, but I always wonder if Kun-kun can recognize that people in Budapest speak Hungarian, not Spanish?” So she set out to find an answer through a scientific study.

Cuaya and her colleagues decided to use brain images from MRI scanning to shed light on her hunch. They worked with dogs of various ages that had, until the experiment, only heard their owners speak just one of the two languages, Spanish or Hungarian. Not surprisingly, getting the dogs to happily take part in the experiment took some creative coaxing and animal training! The researchers first needed to teach Kun-kun and her 17 fellow participating dogs including a labradoodle, a golden retriever and Australian shepherds, to lie still in a brain scanner. Their pet parents were always present, and they could leave the scanner at any point.

The research team played children's book classic The Little Prince in both Spanish and Hungarian while scanning the dogs' brains with an MRI machine. They were looking for evidence that their brains reacted differently to a familiar and unfamiliar language. The researchers also played scrambled versions of the story to find out if dogs could distinguish between speech and non-speech.

The images reveal that dogs' brains show different patterns of activity for an unfamiliar language than for a familiar one — the first time anyone has proved, researchers say, that a non-human brain can distinguish between two languages. This means that the sounds and rhythms of a familiar language are accessible to non-humans.

Interestingly, the team also found that the brains of older dogs were more skilled at detecting speech “suggesting a role for the amount of language exposure”. They suggest that dogs have refined their ability to distinguish between human languages over the long process of domestication.
