【推荐3】A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn
Published in 1980, A People’s History of the United States is an absolutely invaluable examination of the history of the US told not from the point of view of those with power, but those with none—the factory workers, the poor, the women and minorities upon whose backs the US was built. Zinn’s remarkably cohesive (有凝聚力) and conversational work offers a historical view on America that many of us have never considered.
Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee
Published in 1975, Tao of Jeet Kune Do includes various notes and essays by the great Bruce Lee. Far from simply a martial arts book, it illustrates that Jeet Kune Do—the system which Lee invented—is as much a system of thought and an approach to life as it is a way of fight. Tao of Jeet Kune Do is a fascinating and stimulating read. It reflects the thoughts of one of the great human minds of our time.
The Courage to Write by Ralph Keyes
While Ralph Keyes’ conversational guide is an invaluable tool for those who hopes to be writers, it is equally eye-opening for those who simply enjoy reading. The origin of Keyes’ insight lies in his over three decades of teaching writing and is appealing to writers of all levels. Comments from successful authors illustrate how they overcame difficulties in their creative processes. Originally published in 1995, The Courage to Write has become a standard book for ambitious writers.
At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson
Bill Bryson reflects deeply on the history of all of our comforts. Room by room, he explores the origins of all of the “modern artifacts” that we take for granted (想当然), in his typical style—humorous and informative. This 2011 work has, on the surface, a narrower focus but becomes just as involved and in-depth as his previous works.
