Kyrgyzstan, $25/day
Kyrgyzstan is the choice for most travelers interested in trying out Central Asia, and most well-suited to travelers of all budgets. Food is cheap, so is getting around using the minibuses. You can find hostels and local home stays for less than $10. Meals cost $4 – $8 per day.
Romania, $33/day
If you are planning a European trip that’s affordable and a little bit off the beaten path, Romania is perfect for you. Unlike other popular places, many charming towns here remain unknown to most foreigners. You can also take free walking tours in the numerous historical sites. Hostels run $10 – $15 per night, food is hearty and delicious, and the public transportation is reliable and affordable. Meals cost $10 – $15 per day.
Arizona & Utah, $55/day
For an American Southwest road trip, you’ll spend an average of $110/day when you are solo. If you have just one other person, you’d be able to split the costs almost perfectly in half. If you have two other people along, take it down to one third and so on. The more the merrier.
South Africa, $40/day
Any hostels in South Africa are in beautiful settings and each has a unique personality, and affordable too. Food can get expensive. To save money, cook your own food. Grocery stores are plentiful and have reasonable prices. By at least cooking your own breakfast, you can save a lot of money. The best (and possibly cheapest) way to get around the country is to rent a car and share with 3 other people. Meals cost $12 – $15 per day.

Soar Over at RISENY
RISENY places visitors inside a 180-degree capsule to create the sense of flight. The experience begins with a film told by actor Jeff, which touches on the city’s history, specifically Times Square and its global impact. Then visitors are taken to a re-creation of the city’s first subway station at City Hall in 1904, which transforms into a theater with special visual effects. Eventually, a present-day subway car virtually transports guests to the galleries.
Learn About Insects in Danger
In this new photography exhibition at AMNH, photographer Levon has photographed 40 endangered species (selected from the Museum’s world-class research collection). Some of the extinct and endangered samples more than 100 years old are almost brought back to life through the photos that show their extreme details and features. Each photograph took about three weeks to create.
Brain: The Inside Story
This new exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History challenges children to think lovely thoughts about thinking. At the Brain Puzzle station, youngsters build a model starting with the areas that control basic functions, and then add regions that strengthen complex operations, such as remembering, feeling emotions and planning.
Battery Park City Library
As one of the city’s most beautiful libraries, nearly every architectural feature is made from recyclable material. 【推荐1】Corn is among the most commonly consumed grains on the planet. Globally, the average human will consume 70 pounds of corn each year! That’s a whole lot of corn that needs to be grown each year, and that’s not even accounting for corn being grown for animal consumption and biofuel. Just like many other popular foods, farmers are finding it difficult to get enough corn produced.
Of course, complicating matters is the fact that corn is a tropical (热带的) plant, meaning farmers can’t produce it during the colder months of the year. Now, researchers from Cornell University’s Boyce Thompson Institute have developed their own solution: a new variation of corn that recovers much more quickly after being exposed to cold temperatures.
Lead researcher David Stern, president of the Boyce Thompson Institute, and his team made this incredible breakthrough by building on research originally published two years ago. That study had discovered that increasing the levels of an enzyme (酶) called Rubisco in plants caused them to grow more rapidly and reach larger sizes. Rubisco helps plants turn atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) into sugar. Regarding corn specifically, Rubisco levels in corn drop considerably in cold weather.
This time, the research team planted a large group of corn plants, and provided a portion of the group with more Rubison. Then, they allowed all the plants to grow for three weeks at 77 degrees Fahrenheit (normal growing temperature for corn) before dropping the temperature to 57 degrees Fahrenheit for two more weeks. Finally, they heated things up back again to 77 degrees.
“The corn with more Rubisco performed better than regular corn before, during and after chilling (冷却),” explains first author Coralie Salese-Smith. “In fact, we were able to reduce the severity of chilling stress and allow for a more rapid recovery.”
All in all, the corn with more Rubisco was able to recover from the colder temperatures more quickly and with less damage done. The Rubisco corn plants grew to be taller. These results are very promising. However, Stern and his team say they’re still working on improving their approach.
1. What makes the research particularly necessary according to the text?A.The great climate change. | B.Lack of heat-tolerant corn. |
C.The large demand for corn. | D.Corn’s insensitivity to climate. |
A.They made those corn plants resist Rubisco. |
B.They assessed corn plants’ ability to absorb CO2. |
C.They removed all the chilling stress on corn plants. |

A.It has functioned well in solving global starvation. |
B.It is qualified enough to be grown around the world. |
C.It recovers from the colder temperatures more slowly. |
D.It isn’t yet completely perfect for chilling tolerance. |
A.Much More Corn Plants Are Badly Needed |
B.Corn Plants Aren’t Sensitive to Cold Weather |
C.Scientists Have Developed Cold-resistant Corn |
D.Tropical Corn Is Going to Become History Soon |

This is a unique moment. We are stepping up to another phase of our lives at a time of great hardship and global difficulties. Hope this ceremony will help erase sad memories, refresh beautiful ones and add more splendid memories into our lives.
I was born in the middle of war, which caused my family to move to Serbia for three years. When the war ended, we returned to Bosnia. My mother, who is and will ever be my heroine, was the only figure who guided me, provided for me and kept me on the right track, in the hope for a better life. I owed her so much as she is responsible for huge part of my success. I will always remember her teachings “to complain less and always find solutions at the price of whatever it takes” , which brought me to China, an ancient land of new hopes.
During the COVID-19 outbreak, I got the best opportunity to understand China. I saw millions of people united with one goal-to win the battle against this epidemic. I have never seen such a collective dedication from a nation, turning things for the better by sacrificing personal convenience on a grand scale. China's governance and health care system proves to be one of the most efficient in the world. With a population of 1.4 billion, China not only has successfully controlled the transmission of the corona-virus but also assisted many other countries across the globe.
Everyone has a role to play in the battle against the virus. In Tsinghua, I played a tiny but necessary role: Staying on campus, studying online, cooperating during temperature checks and respecting social distancing measures. The rules set by the university and Chinese government had everyone's health and safety as first priority. This made me feel safe and confident that China was on the right track towards victory. Throughout this time, despite the immense challenges, Tsinghua has facilitated many online conferences, which helped me nurture more skills in my field of study.
……
Let's undertake everything we can for the sake of unity, humanity and the international community. Let's work together for a more promising future and prosperous world.
