Greenport, one of Long Island’s great summer destinations, offers many family-friendly ways to spend the day in the village.
PARKS AND BEACHES
Mitchell Park: It is a dog-friendly spot where kids can play. Families can wander along the waterfront and watch boaters.
Arshamomaque Preserve: Located on the edge of Greenport, the preserve is a place where families can explore—just make sure you keep your dog leashed (拴着). Featuring 126 acres of wetlands and woodland habitats, lookout for an abundance of wildlife.
Orient Beach State Park: About 10 miles east of Greenport, it has a large sandy-yet-rocky beach where peoples it in the sun while others fish. The park is a great place to bird watch.
ACTIVITIES
Skate Park: The park is open, featuring ramps (坡道), a half-pipe and other items on which to trick. Safety gear (用具) is required.
Mini Golf: Golf at Drossos Motel is open to the public daily. The course has 18 holes and features the Jennie’s at Drossos snack bar.
SHOPS
Greenport is a very walkable town, with much of what can be shopped on Front Street.
Goldsmith’s Toys & Electronics: This shop has direct appeal to kids. Walk past and see the rubber ducks in the window—it’s the store’s signature item—but walk inside to find a variety of toys and seasonal fun; it’s an independent toy store that’s been in town for more than 30 years.
Sweet Indulgences: It’s also highly likely your little one digs treats, so a stop by this shop should not disappoint. Parents can purchase the many household items for sale, while also finding lots of sweets and chocolates.
One Love Beach: It’s another place that should have youth appeal, as it carries beachy gear while also offering water skis and sailboats for rent.

When to buy
If you’re shopping for domestic flights, check prices on Tuesday afternoons. This is an old tip but still valid because most U. S. carriers continue to release sales on Tuesday morning, and competitors quickly drop their fares to match the better deals.
When to fly
Weekdays continue to be generally cheaper times to fly than weekends for most flights. In the U.S. specifically, the cheapest days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. A good itinerary (旅行计划)for the expensive U.S. spring break travel period is Tuesday to Saturday; it won’t be cheap exactly, but it will save you money (in most cases) over weekend-to- weekend travel.
Direct vs. connecting flights
Compare the price of direct with connecting fights. Sometimes adding a stop to your route will save you money, and it might be enough to endure the extra-long flying day. Some examples:
Boston to Seattle: $247 direct, $234 one-stop
San Francisco to Raleigh/Durham: $553 direct, $362 one-stop
Okay, the savings on Boston-Seattle might not be worth it to you, but I’ll bet you’ll think twice about the direct flight for San Francisco to Raleigh.
Compare, compare, compare
Stifle the impulse to go to your favorite airline site to purchase tickets without doing any comparison; it’s a disaster. Example: Let's say you want to fly from New York to London and figuring your favorite U.S. legacy carrier will get you there for the best price.
Airline price: $554 round-trip
Comparison price: $486
Obviously, the legacy carrier did not have the cheapest flight, but wait, there’s more: The comparison site also showed a cheaper flight from the same legacy carrier ($521 ). See what you’re missing when you fail to compare?
1. When could the best price for flights within the U.S. most possibly be found?A.Monday morning. | B.Tuesday afternoon. |
C.Thursday morning. | D.Sunday morning. |
A.Choose direct flights rather than connecting ones. |
B.Take the cheapest deal from their favorite airline. |
C.Look for flights to Europe throughout the summer. |
D.Avoid weekend-to-weekend flights in holiday seasons. |
A.Put off doing something. | B.Feel free to do something. |
C.Get well prepared for something. | D.Force someone to do things he dislikes. |

By adding more salt, sugar, and fat, food companies design food to make us want to eat more and more. Moss says people have an addiction to junk food because they are often powerless to resist it. This also happens to people who smoke or take drugs.
Today, one in five children in the United States is obese. Health professionals want to encourage healthier eating habits and remove childhood obesity. But this is a contentious (有争议的) issue. Some people believe that everyone should have enough self-control to choose what they eat, while others say that food companies should stop designing and advertising addictive food.
Moss’s article mentions how Kraft Lunchables were advertised on television to make kids feel as though they were in control of their food choices. The ads said, “All day, you gotta do what they say… But lunchtime is all yours.” Kraft, the company that owns Lunchables, sold the idea of power to kids, and it worked. Sales skyrocketed!
Children are an important target for companies producing junk food and soda. Children who eat and drink their products are more likely to buy these same products when they grow up to be adults.
Many people believe that rules should be enforced to protect children from unhealthy food advertisements. They argue that we should follow the lead of countries like Norway and Sweden, where it is illegal to advertise to children under the age of 12. However, companies that sell junk food believe these rules inconvenience consumers and target the snack food industry unfairly. Others say that advertisements are good because they teach children about new products and can help them become critical consumers — people who think carefully about the products they buy and use.
1. Why are people addicted to junk food according to Moss?A.Because companies add salt, sugar and fat to the food. |
B.Because people often smoke or take drugs. |
C.Because people are powerful to resist it. |
D.Because companies use science to design and advertise the food. |
A.Kraft Lunchables succeeded by advertising. |
B.Kraft Lunchables were advertised on TV. |
C.Kraft Lunchables were not popular among kids. |
D.Kraft Lunchables advertised to help kids control their food choices. |
A.Extremely important. | B.Possibly dangerous. |
C.Making careful judgments. | D.Expressing disapproval. |
A.Positive. | B.Objective. | C.Negative. | D.Indifferent. |

Melbourne people, like all Australians, enjoy travelling and their increasing experience of other countries means local tastes have changed. The city has become much more cosmopolitan (世界性的).
Someone told me that in Melbourne you can sample the cuisines of seventy-five different countries; I haven’t managed to eat my way through them all, but it’s a wonderful challenge. And besides the top-class restaurants, you mustn’t miss Melbourne’s café culture and wonderful beachside places at St Kilda.
If you enjoy your food, you will love exploring local produce markets. One I really like is the Queen Victoria Market on the corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Streets, which sells a huge variety of fruit and vegetables.
My friend joined me for my most recent trip home. It was fun showing him all the familiar landmarks, but also going to places I’ve never been before. From Melbourne, we took the Great Ocean Road, a 150-mile highway that is a scenic delight. We passed through an area that includes the world-famous Twelve Apostles, the Otways rainforest and Bells Beach along with resort (度假胜地) towns such as Torquay and Apollo Bay.
We’ve still got a pretty extensive “to do” list, including a trip to Queensland and the Barrier Reef. And although I’ve been to Hayman Island a couple of times, I’d like to get to know some of the more special resort islands that can be reached only by private boat or helicopter.
The flight to Australia is a long one but perfectly comfortable if you follow a routine like mine. I get on board and immediately change into my flight pyjamas (睡衣) — one day I’m going to work out how to accessorise them with fashion items, but until then I just look like someone wearing pyjamas!
I just love to travel. It’s an Aussie thing: as a people we are up for jumping on a plane and going off to explore. I can’t wait to see where I’ll go next.

Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a four-hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time that I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous Saint Catherine Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a diner because we wanted to order poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁) . It is delicious.
However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French-speaking city in the world. But since almost the rest of Canadians speak English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we’d head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveler can choose whichever direction he wants to go.
