This is a story of a penguin that swims 5,000 miles to a beach in Brazil every year in order to visit the man who saved his life. It sounds like something out of a fairy tale (童话故事), but it’s true!
Joao Pereira de Souza is a 71-year-old retired worker and part-time fisherman. He lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He found the small penguin lying on rocks at his local beach in 2015.
The penguin was starving and covered in oil. Joao rescued the penguin, naming him Din Din, cleaned the oil off his feathers and fed him fish to rebuild his strength.
When Din Din recovered, Mr. de Souza set him free into the sea, never expecting to see his new friend again.
The little guy wasn’t gone long though, and just a few months later, he was back at the same beach. He found Joao fishing and followed him home, staying with him for the rest of the year.
Amazingly, this cycle has continued over the past five years. Each year Din Din spends about eight months with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding(繁殖) on the Patagonia coasts of Argentina and Chile.
“I love the penguin like he’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,”Joao told Globo TV. “No one else is allowed to touch him. He attacks them if they do. He lies on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed(喂养) him fish and to pick him up.”
Professor Krajewski, a biologist who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, said: “I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well.”

I was fortunate to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the kids during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings we were alone and frankly I was uneasy about it.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big beautiful German shepherd (牧羊犬) on our doorstep. Where did this obviously well-cared-for dog come from? Even though he seemed gentle, he was powerful. The children took an instant liking to “German” and begged me to let him in. I agreed to let him sleep in the basement until the next day. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.
The following morning, we tried to find German’s owner with no results. German, meanwhile, made himself part of the family, wrestling (摔跤) with the kids and playing in the yard. Saturday night he was still with us.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children to the park. I left German behind in case his owner came by. When we stopped at a gas station, we were amazed to see him running after us. No way was he going to be left behind. So he jumped into the car and settled down in the back. He stayed again Sunday night.
Monday morning, I let him out for a run while the children got ready for school. He didn’t come back. We thought we’d never see him again. We were wrong. On Friday evening, German was back again. We took him in, and again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
It went like this for almost 10 months. We grew to love German and look forward to his coming. When we saw him come to attention and perk up (竖起) his ears, and heard that low growl (咆哮) begin deep in his throat, we knew we were protected.
Each week, between German’s visits, I grew a little braver on my own, but every weekend I enjoyed his company. Then one Monday morning we patted his head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time. He never came back.
I still think of him often. He came when I needed him the most and stayed until I was strong enough to go on alone. I’ll never forget him.

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important sea water is!
Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic (微小的) animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.
The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.
Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats (海域). Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered (提倡) to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important sea water is!

The area is also home to a Maori tribe called Ngai Tahu, which has spent years campaigning for the birds to return to their land. The Maori are New Zealand’s Indigenous people (first people known to live there), and they consider the takahē bird to be “taonga”, meaning a treasure.
Takahē are large, round, flightless birds with red legs, and they have lived in New Zealand since prehistoric times. Like many New Zealand birds, takahē evolved to be flightless because there were no mammals to compete with. When Europeans arrived in New Zealand, however, predators such as cats and ferrets were introduced and killed off many flightless birds. Takahē were declared extinct in 1898, but a small number of the birds were discovered in 1948 in a remote part of the Murchison Mountains.
Since then, conservationists have been trying to restore the takahē population in captivity. They gathered the bird’s eggs in order to keep the chicks safe from predators. The chicks were raised by volunteers, who fed them while wearing sockpuppets on their hands to imitate the parent birds. There are now about 500 takahē birds in captivity. Several pairs of adult birds have been released into the island’s sanctuaries and national parks. Experts will monitor them to see how they adapt to their new environment. If everything goes well, they hope to release seven more birds this month and 10 young birds next year.
Ta Tipene O’Regan, an elder of the Ngai Tahu tribe, helped to release the birds. He told The Guardian newspaper, ”There are few things more beautiful than to watch these large birds running back into lands where they haven’t walked for over a century. ”O’Regan said, “It’s an absolute joy. ”

The social media video app on Wednesday shared its list of top 100 videos, creators and trends in America during 2020. “These videos brought joy and inspiration to millions of Americans in the rough year,” said Kudzi Chikumbu, director of creator community at TikTok.
The platform has been widely associated with Generation Z (people born after 1996), millennials (people born in the 1980s or 1990s) and influencers who have started careers based on the shared videos.
The Weeknd's Blinding Lights and Jason Derulo's Savage Love inspired TikTok dance challenges that made them among the top songs used on the app.
For some TikTok creators, the pandemic itself became inspiration to create a connection with other users. Comedian Caitlin Reilly used the app during quarantine (隔离) to make fun of those annoying coworkers for one of the top liked videos. And singer Curtis Roach made an song for the endless days at home with his song Bored in the House.
The second most popular video was an Idaho man named Nathan Apodaca who shot to fame after coolly singing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, while skateboarding on a highway.
But the most liked TikTok video was awarded to Bella Poarch with 45 million followers, who created a simple but interesting video with a few seconds of well-timed head nods and eye rolls.
While the app might be designed for youth, Chikumbu said that the growth of TikTok this year has pushed it more into mainstream culture. “You're seeing everyone from the teenager to the college students with their parents and then their grandparents all making videos,” said Chikumbu. “And now TikTok truly transcends generations, particularly in this year when people had a lot of time to dig in and not only watch, but try.”

They will attend American schools, meet American teenagers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn, George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize American schools”, he says. “It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany, we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”
1. The whole exchange programme is mainly to________.A.help teenagers in other countries know the real America |

The love between sisters is going to be tested again in “Frozen 2.” Queen Elsa and Princess Anna will take a journey. Together, they hope to save the kingdom of Arendelle. We also get to meet some new characters.
The clip (片段) opens with a narrator (讲述者) speaking. “Far away, as north as we can go, once stood an enchanted forest,” he says. The scene flashes back to a young Elsa and Anna. They are talking with their parents. In the first movie, the parents died in a terrible accident. “You see an enchanted forest?” Anna asks her dad, King Agnarr. “Yes. It was a magical place, but something went wrong. Since then, no one can get in or out,” the narrator continues. Scenes show characters battling with swords and shields. The forest soon gets covered in purple flames and smoke.
Next, you see the sisters talking in a caring moment. “What would I do without you?” Elsa asks her sister. “You’ll always have me,” Anna promises. Then the adventure begins. The people of Arendelle are shown running out of the kingdom. Of course, Anna is not going to let her sister go into the forest alone. “Excuse me? I climbed the north mountain, survived a frozen heart and saved you from my ex-boyfriend, so you know I’m coming,” Anna says.
The final clips show the whole group going into the enchanted forest. The crew is led by Elsa, Anna and Kristoff. Olaf the snowman is there, too. Sven, Kristoff’s pet reindeer, joins them. During their journey, there are some new faces. One is the fierce female leader of the roaming Northuldra group, Yelana. Another is the free-spirited member of the Northuldra, Honeymaren. She is joined by her cheery brother, Ryder, and the curious and cute salamander, Bruni.
It looks like we will finally learn why Elsa was born with magical powers. We will also continue to see that Anna will do anything for her sister. “You can’t just follow me into fire!” Elsa shouts at Anna. “Then don’t run into fire!” Anna fires back.
