Finding a balance of living with each other, being sociable, and respecting privacy (隐私) can make a new household even better.
Respect (尊重) others’ space
This especially applies to food! Don’t eat anything that you have not bought yourself. Decide on whether you share common household goods like milk, shampoo, and toilet paper. If you haven’t agreed to share, do not touch.
Communicate Well
Learn your housemates’ needs and preferences and respect them. Are they a clean freak, while you’re happy to let the dishes sit for a few days?

【推荐2】Living alone is hard, especially for old people. Besides, some old homeowners might have trouble bringing food and articles of daily use in from a car. Or they might need someone to tell them where they’ve put their house keys.
College students are trying to find cheap, comfortable places to live without borrowing even more money from a bank. Dorms(宿舍) are a choice for some, but they often come with crowded bathrooms, shared bedrooms. And sometimes university housing is even more expensive than local apartments. A Canadian organization, Toronto HomeShare, noticed both of these problems and came up with a way to solve the problem.
College students usually deal with some housework and provide company while living in comfortable environments without breaking the bank. The old benefit from it spiritually. Nick, a 27-year-old graduate student who lives with 75-year-old Maureen Tara, said, “Coming back home to Tara’s family helps me recover because it’s such a relaxed environment here. If I’ve had a hard day and I’m feeling low, there’s lots of love in the air.”
The level of care that older housemates need is different. Joshua is in a poor state of health. His son thanks the college student living with his dad for his help in dangerous situations when he’s not around. “At least, there is someone to talk to my dad,” says Joshua’s son. Students who’ve moved to a new city, far from their families and the comforts of a home-cooked meal, also need to find peace in their living situation.
Boston’s Nesterly is a homeshare app for senior/student living pairings, and people living in St. Louis’s Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood can take part in Homeshare St. Louis. The advantages of senior/student homeshare program are clear, and they might just make college students wonder why this wasn’t a choice when they were sharing crowded dorms with others.

It was, it seemed, so huge to me as a child. And it had a lovely living room with a piano in it and a lovely sort of hall with lots of carpets and chests and antiques(古董)and so on. And there was a mysterious room. It was the drawing room, and we only used it on Sundays, or Christmas Day or Easter Day, and I used to be amazed about this room because it had the best furniture in it but it was covered up with sheets. It was as if all the furniture was wearing clothes and it seemed to me ridiculous that we couldn't enjoy this beautiful furniture all the week through. And probably my favorite rom was the kitchen. It had a lovely red flagstone(石板)floor, which was always highly polished, and an Aga, you know, one of those big cookers that heats the whole room so it was always warm there. It was a very warm room with baked bread and my grandmother used to make ice cream and we’d eat it in there and … there was a vegetable garden leading from there so I spent a lot of time in the vegetable garden picking peas and eating them — my grandmother used to really cross with me because I used to pick all the vegetables and the fruit for our meals and then I’d eat half of them, because they tasted so delicious coming fresh from the garden.
I went back to it a few years ago and it was a big mistake. They've modernized it inside, they've got rid of those lovely old fire-place … have just gone. And they've knocked a wall down so the drawing room and the living room have become one big modern plastic kind of room. But I think what upset me most about it was the feeling that the house had shrunk. It had become smaller and my memory of this lovely large warm comfortable. house had turned into an old house with modernized rooms inside it. And it taught me a lesson really, that you can’t go back on the past and recapture it. But there's still a beautiful memory there.

D.It had a mysterious atmosphere on Sundays and festivals. |
A.the house was in terrible condition | B.the house had a new owner |
C.she couldn't move back into it any longer | D.it was far from what she had expected |
【推荐1】Grandparents are sources of extra dollars, hearty hugs. There’s a long history of literary grandparents — passing down wisdom, sharing adventures, being eaten by wolves. Here are a few of our very favorite grandparents from some of our very favorite kids’ books.
Hipple Grandmother (from My Hipple Grandmother by Reeve Lindbergh)
This grandma is a wonderful reminder that not all grandparents grew up during the Great Depression. Grandparents come from a wide variety of backgrounds and time periods, so it’s fun to celebrate a grandmother who “hasn’t cut her hair at all since 1969.”
Uncle Alp (of Heidi by Johanna Spyri)
This children’s classic, originally published in 1881, actually has a surprisingly progressive attitude towards grandparents.
Throughout Spyri’s text, grandparents act as caregivers, and the transformation of Heidi’s grandpa, Uncle Alp, from a bad-tempered hermit (隐士) to a loving parent figure is the emotional core of the book.
Grannie (of Red Riding Hood retold by James Marshall)
Red Riding’s poor Grannie might be the most famous grandparent. Red was able to see past the wolf’s trick, but her grandmother’s fate depends on what version of the tale you read. If you prefer your grandmothers undigested, you’ll love this classic tale told by James Marshall.
Nana (of Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Peña)
Young CJ and his Nana are waiting for the bus after church one Sunday, and CJ starts wondering why they have to take the bus, why he doesn’t have as many toys as other kids, and why they live in a “dirty” part of town. His Nana addresses each question with patience and grace, helping her grandson understand inequality with the kind of insights.
