When you think about a Hawaiian holiday, you probably think about relaxing on the beach with a drink in your hand and the sun on your body. Although Hawaii is certainly a perfect place for a lazy holiday, there is much more than just sunshine and beaches.
These large islands of Hawaii that are open to visitors each offer something a little different, where you go will depend on what kind of holiday you prefer.
Molokai(莫洛凯岛)
If you go on holiday to experience local culture and history, then there is no place better than the island of Molokai. Take a tour of the Halawa Valley, where the earliest Hawaiians are thought to have built one of the island's first villages, and find out what Hawaii might have looked like hundreds of years ago.
Kauai(考艾岛)
Do you prefer your holiday to be more exciting? The island of Kauai is home to the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park ,a state park full of beautiful scenery and nature trails(小路). Why not try a hike along the ocean the 18-kilometer trail? Or book a place at the Hanakoa campsite so you can rest under the stars .
The Island of Hawaii
Hawaii's biggest cities are on the island of Oahu, but Oahu isn't the state's largest island. That would be the Island of Hawaii, also called the "Big Island". And if you dream about leaving the city behind and spending all of your time with the local wildlife, this may be the place for you! Here you can swim with manta rays(魔鬼鱼)and snorkel(用通气管潜泳)with green sea turtles, and maybe you'll see a dolphin or a humpback whale by the Kona Coast.

The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks in its surface and other damage.
The dome was completed around 1863. U.S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast iron frame(铸铁钢架) is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the present construction(=building) is to repair the leaks, to fill in the cracks, to take off unnecessary layers of paint.”
Workers are removing old paint. They covered a large part of the building in plastic and a special cloth to protect workers from the wind and other elements. Much of the work is done at night, when lawmakers are not in the building.
Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its present appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was dramatic, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly. It is kind of a disappointment.”
Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries...and you know, there just needs to be preventive maintenance(保养). I am not upset with that at all.”
The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for the inauguration of a new president in January 2017.

If you’ve ever visited a large city or famous site, there’s no doubt you’ve seen the marks left behind by tourists.
Even if tourists act responsibly, the number of visitors alone presents a risk.
Other negative effects of tourism may not be as evident. Tourists may visit a popular destination with little or no regard for those who call it home.
Tourism most definitely has its advantages, of course, economic and otherwise. There is nothing greater than experiencing a new place, people or culture firsthand.
A.Tourism can cause damage to local environment and culture as well. |
B.People have defaced (损坏外观) historical sites around the world. |
C.Some tourists even kill the local wildlife to eat, which badly damage the balance of the natural environment. |
D.Sometimes they may act rudely to residents or simply not observing community rules. |
