As mountains go, 1,642-foot Squaw Peak isn't particularly impressive. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming content among its steep, slippery cliff's (悬崖), resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.

Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak's record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the splendid view; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking over the lip of the high cliff with her husband.

When Grant's mother rejoined him, the two headed down the trail. Suddenly, he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!" a man yelled. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. She'd fallen off the side of the mountain.

Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant decided to lend a hand. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, Grand walked off the trail alone.

After 15 minutes of climbing over very large rocks, pushing past sharp brush, and slipping down patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a kneeling position on a small rocky outcropping (露出地面的岩石). The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Incredibly, she was alive.

“Paula!" Grant shouted.“ Paula. Is that you?"

The woman hardly responded. Grant called 911 to report her location. He waited where he was for a bit, but she kept trying to move, and every time she moved, she slipped a little more. Afraid that in her confused state of mind she might fall off the outcropping to her death, Grant crawled on all fours up a tight, narrow path, gaining traction (牵引力) by digging into the dirt with his fingers and feet until he reached Paula.

The scene of firefighters in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia being frozen into “icemen” while braving the fierce snowstorm to rescue people moved many to tears.

On March 12, Qi Yuehua, head of the Baerhu Road Station of the New Baerhu Zuoqi Fire and Rescue Brigade in Hulunbuir, said in an interview that the team members worked continuously for nearly five hours two days ago, saving 8 people trapped in 3 cars. The temperature at the time was around minus 30 degrees Celsius, so there was later a scene of firefighters being frozen into “icemen”.

“At 12:46 on March 10, we received a call for help, saying that a vehicle was trapped in the snow 35 kilometers away in the direction of National Highway 332. A driver was trapped in the car waiting for rescue” said Qi Yuehua. “By noon, a fierce snowstorm had formed, and it was blowing strongly and the temperature was very low. Obviously, it was dangerous to drive out, but everyone must immediately go to the scene.”

The two rescue vehicles with 12 firefighters set out at 12:50. The visibility was less than 5 meters that day, and the snowy road was slippery, making driving very difficult. It was hard to tell which way it was to the rescue site, and the rescue team could only move slowly based on previous driving experience. Consequently, it took more than an hour that day to drive for a journey that usually takes only ten minutes.

At 14:18, the rescue team eventually arrived at the scene and found the location of the trapped driver. Due to the heavy wind and snow, the door of the vehicle could not be completely closed. The driver hid in the car, trembling violently with cold. The firefighters found that two other vehicles with seven people were also trapped there. They were involved in a traffic accident due to slippery roads and poor visibility.

After a heart operation, I figured taking care of a dog would keep me active. So I went to the animal shelter, where a little dog in a cage caught my eye. Her name was Honey and she was five months old. The worker opened Honey’s cage and I picked her up. We both went to the yard where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down, watching Honey run after it. She ran back toward me, ball in mouth. Immediately, I filled out the paperwork and took Honey home.

One morning last year I decided to take Honey out with me. My wife was away for a few days and I didn’t want to leave Honey alone. I took my keys and opened the door of my car. Honey jumped into it and sat in the back seat.

I drove around the road slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. I felt the car slipped in the soft soil, and rolled and rolled until I heard a horrible noise. A giant part of the roof hit my leg and chest. I was pinned. With a sharp pain in my chest, I looked over to find Honey was still in the back seat, trembling.

I tried to see if I could unpin myself, but I failed. I fetched my cell phone and dialed 911. Just as I’d feared, I couldn’t get a signal at the bottom of this valley. Robin, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me. There was no reason she would drive up to my house.

My chest hammered. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the pills. I ate one and took a deep breath. My heartbeat slowed. I knew that I must get Honey out first. There was a hole in the driver’s side window, small but maybe enough. Painfully, I reached over and picked her up. I gently got her through it. I patted her and she jumped to the ground and ran up the side of the valley.

It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice Esposito arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station, jumped into her minivan and began the 20-minute drive home to her husband and seven-year-old son. She’s just returned from visiting her mother and had traveled the route so many times, she practically drove on autopilot: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then ----wham! Out of nowhere on that awful night of October 10, 2017, a car hit Esposito's minivan, forcing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the minivan, injured but mostly just stunned(吓晕) by the impact and by the vehicle's airbags.

As it happened, Pete Dipinto was getting for bed. He'd just closed his book and was ready to sleep when he heard the loud noise of metal on metal and broken glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window. A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and, still in his pajamas(睡衣), ran out of the door. ''Any firefighter would have done what I did,'' he said. ''We're always on duty.''

The first car he came upon, 2000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once DiPinto concluded the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito's minivan straddling(横跨) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a shocking sound: the bells signaling an oncoming train.

''I see the headlight of the train. '' he said. DiPinto ran to Esposito's minivan and banged on the driver's side window. She just looked at him, her eyes unfocused. ''I don't know where I am,'' she said. She seemed unhurt.
