●Patagonia is probably the safest part of South America. I’ve hitchhiked in Chile without problems and would thoroughly recommend this as a form of transport. (Get tips on hitchhiking in South America here.)
●Car hire is also an interesting and rewarding way of seeing Patagonia, although booking in advance during high season is again recommended. I recommend using Rental Cars and suggest you check out this complete guide to planning a Patagonia road trip for essential tips and tricks.
●The shoulder seasons, October — November and March — April, are far quieter and cheaper for backpacking in Patagonia. Accommodation and agencies in some towns are sometimes not running in October or April though.
●Bus schedules vary depending on the season and change year-to-year. Always visit the bus station when you get to a new place to confirm timings and buy tickets for the next leg of your journey. It’s also important to plan additional days into your Patagonia backpacking trip in case you can’t travel on the day you had initially intended. For more information about this subject, check out this detailed guide about getting to Patagonia.
●Self-catering is by far the best way of keeping costs down on these Patagonia backpacking trips. Where possible, I’ve highlighted the best places to stock up on food. I’ve also written in more detail about visiting Patagonia on a budget.
●However, crossing the border between Argentina and Chile, you cannot take fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese or meat. It will be confiscated and if you don’t own up to it (particularly when heading into Chile), you may be fined.

Alentejo, Portugal
Head to the Alentejo region, Portugal’s rural heartland. Here, you can see Roman remains in its UNESCO-protected capital évora, road trip through peaceful countryside planted with trees and olive groves, and enjoy the wild coast. The conserved Atlantic coastline offers miles of unspoiled beaches and is popular for surfing, with the best waves from autumn to spring.
Val Gardena, Dolomites, Italy
During fall in the Dolomite mountains of Northern Italy, the changing leaves compete with the enrosadira (朝霞) — as the setting sun hits the mountains at just the right angle, causing them to glow pink. It’s an all-out feast for the senses in Val Gardena, whether you’re hiking mountain trails within the UNESCO World Heritage landscapes of Puez-Odle National Park, or tasting the local Ladin cuisine during a three-week food festival.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Greece’s second city sits on the Thermaic Gulf, opening onto the Aegean Sea. Famed for its vast culinary offerings, it’s also mostly bypassed by tourists from the US. During October and November, venture out of the city to take in the changing leaves along the hiking trails near Mount Olympus, 90 minutes southwest of Thessaloniki.
Baden-Baden, Germany
Baden-Baden actually has more appeal in fall, with spectacular views of the surrounding Rhine Valley and Black Forest as the leaves start to glow with color. Autumn’s temperatures are ideal for soaking your bones after a hike in Baden-Baden’s many hot springs like the ones at Caracalla Spa, which first opened in 1877. You can also stop into a winery to sample the wares, as well as local specialties like onion tart.
1. What do Alentejo and Val Gardena share?A.They are both well-known for hot springs. |

C.They are both situated in the heart of the country. |
D.They both offer breathtaking mountain landscapes. |

You can’t get the “feel” of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus. Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.
Explore on Your Own
Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school’s selling points. But the oldest and prettiest buildings don’t give you the entire picture of a college. Try to walk the extra mile and get the complete picture of the campus.
Read the Bullet in Boards
When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide an easy way to see what’s happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what’s going on outside the classrooms.
Eat in the Dining Hall
You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall. Try to sit with students if you can. Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there enough healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons (优惠券) for free meals in the dining halls.
Visit a Class in Your Major
If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You’ll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they arc in classroom discussion. Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major. Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit-most colleges don’t allow visitors to drop in at class unannounced.
Talk to Lots of Students
Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren’t getting paid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about college life that isn’t part of the admission script. Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking or studying, but a group of random students might.
