About a half-mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming.

In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum (起泡的浮渣).Some times a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away.

When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across. The ice looked solid. No water showed through it”, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.”Harry urged. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.

In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack (裂缝)! I stretched out (伸展) my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures.

I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice.

I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot.“I can’t get out!”I screamed when I caught some breath. Then I saw he turned and ran from the pond. Despair and scare beat me out of breath. After what seemed to be hours of fruitless waiting. I was on the verge of breaking down.

17-year-old Tammy lives on the Little Acres Farm with her family. In October, they create a successful hay maze (干草堆的迷宫) on the farm and people buy tickets to get in. However, people like to see pumpkins on Halloween, and the farm doesn’t have very good pumpkins.

One morning, Tammy’s father told her, “The Shelby Farm is planning a hay maze this year, which means they are going to compete with us.” “Oh no!” said Tammy, “they’ll take away our business!” “Well, we’ll just have to make ours bigger and better,” Dad suggested. “Tammy, you have good social skills. I need you to go over to the farm and see what they are up to,” Dad said. “Can I trust you to do a good job?” “Of course you can, Dad!” she said. “I’ll find out what’s going on and come back with a full report!”

Early the next morning, Tammy took her bicycle and went to find out information about the Shelby’s plan for the maze. When she got to the farm, Mr. Shelby was staring at piles of hay in front of the barn, looking confused. In his hand was a bright orange pumpkin.

“Hello, Mr. Shelby,” she smiled, “how lovely the pumpkin is! If only our farm had pumpkins like it.” “Thank you, Tammy. I’m glad you like it. Why not take it home as a gift for your family? We got a plentiful harvest of good pumpkins this year.” “Thanks, you are so kind and generous.” When Mr. Shelby handed the pumpkin to Tammy, he sighed, “How I wish my farm had a hay maze as beautiful as the pumpkin.” Looking at the pumpkin in hand and the piles of hay in front of the barn, Tammy had an idea in her mind.

When Tammy got home, she showed the pumpkin to Dad as well as her solution to the current situation.

At one time children made May Day baskets to celebrate spring and enjoy the rewards of giving surprising gifts to their beloved ones. When I was in perhaps the third grade, our class took on such an adventure. For several days, we worked on creating paper baskets. We cut colorful stripes of construction paper and wove them together, following our teacher, Miss Anderson. We cut and wove and glued. Then we decorated them with our crayons and more cutting and gluing. Finally, we fitted paper handles onto the tops so that we could secretly hang our creations on the doors of unsuspecting receivers: surely our mothers.

We were finished right on time. Miss Anderson brought armloads of flowers for us to use in stuffing our prizes. Lilacs and tulips and al the colorful flowers of spring. We had to wait until the day was nearly over before we were allowed to choose the flowers that were just right for our baskets. I chose the biggest, most beautiful blossoms, allowing myself to be selfish for the sake of my mother. Then we fidgeted (烦躁) away what remained of our day, waiting for the clock to tick down the minutes to our release.

Finally, mercifully, the bell rang! We threw on our coats, gathered our homework and our lunch boxes, tied on our scarves and then, carefully, we cradled our offerings of love and off we ran to our individual homes! I was so excited! I ran as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. I paused at the corner of my house, to catch my breath and savor the moment. Then I glanced down to admire my offering one last time before I hung it lovingly over the doorknob. Horrors! Shock, dread and depression! My flowers were gone! Apparently, bouncing out on my mad dash home, all that was left was a sad, messed-up, wrinkled little empty basket! I stood on the doorway and burst into mournful sobbing tears.

Mrs. March has four daughters. They are Amy, Jo, Meg and Beth. Summer vacation came, and the girls wanted to relax and not do any housework.

“May we, Mother?” asked Meg, turning to Mrs. March, who sat nearby.

“You may try your experiment for a week and see how you like it. I think by Saturday night you will find that all play and no work is as bad as all work and no play.” said Mrs. March.

“Oh, dear, no! It will be wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg eagerly.

The next morning, Meg did not appear till ten o'clock. The room seemed lonely and unclean as no one had done their duties that morning. Jo spent the morning on the river, and the afternoon reading. Beth spent the morning with her music, pleased that she had no dishes to wash. Amy sat down to draw flowers.

The second day, the third day... they repeated the same life.

Though Mrs. March did her daughters’ duties around the house, keeping home pleasant. It was astonishing what a strange and uncomfortable state the house was in with everyone “resting.” The days kept getting longer and longer, and the girls became upset more easily, quarreling quite a bit more often.

No one would admit that they were tired of the experiment, but by Friday night, they realized that they were glad the week was nearly over. Mrs. March then decided to finish off the experiment in an appropriate manner.

When they got up on Saturday morning, there was no fire in the kitchen, no breakfast in the dining room, and no mother anywhere to be seen.

“What has happened?” cried Jo in shock.

Meg ran upstairs and soon came back. “She says it’s been a hard week for her, so we mustn’t complain, but take care of ourselves.” said Meg.
