Walk to School Day is a great opportunity for me to spend time with parents, kids, and teachers and to present our Safe Routes to School program and the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative(倡议).
As a father, grandfather and former schoolteacher, I know how important it is that we provide students with safe choice to get to school while promoting exercise and healthy lifestyles. That’s why I’ve embraced the Safe Routes to School program so wholeheartedly since I became Secretary of Transportation.
You know, we’re looking at an increasingly sedentary(久坐的)generation of children. One out of every three kids in America is now overweight. And I admire the First Lady’s effort to end this within a generation. Safe Routes to School is a natural partner for Let’s Move. For more than 10 years, Safe Routes to School has been making it easier for students to walk and bike from home to school. And ESS, where I walked today, is one of the earliest schools to participate.
We know this program has been enormously effective because of the steady increase in the number of kids walking or biking to school. And as we made our way down the street this morning I was reminded yet again of this program’s extraordinary work.
Look, walking and biking to school is good for students’ health. It’s good for the environment. And it’s good for the entire community’s quality of life.
Everybody wins when kids take Safe Routes to School.

【推荐3】Is Adventurous Sports Teaching Good or Bad?
In recent years, adventurous sports such as bungee jumping have become increasingly popular. More and more people are taking these kinds of sports whatever the cost is. They say it is so exciting and enjoyable to take part in an adventure, which can relieve pressure or stress.
According to ED, some schools in the U.S. have also been urged to increase class teaching about adventures. And many have.
The study involved injuries treated in hospital emergency departments. Only two percent were serious.
The researchers did not try to identify the causes of the increase, but they have some theories. Lara McKenzie from Ohio State University was the lead researcher. She says one possibility is a decrease in the number of school nurses during the period they studied. For example, a study in 2004 showed that the number of school nurses nationally failed to meet federal guidelines.
Another possible reason for more injuries is a change in the traditional idea of adventure. Cheryl Richardson is with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. From her point of view, this “New adventure” expands the kinds of sports that are taught.
The researchers say larger class sizes are another possible reason for the increase in injuries.
A.Classes on large scales can mean less supervision and cause potential injuries. |
B.Yet now comes a study showing an increase in the number of injuries in “adventurous” class. |
C.Generally speaking, untrained nurses could be more likely to be unemployed. |
D.Adventurous sports help to relax students’ pressure and benefit their mental health. |
E.But high-risk activities some schools offer now, like bungee jumping, can also expand the risks. |
F.Schools without a nurse on duty may be more likely to send an injured child to a hospital. |

【推荐2】What is bodysurfing?
Bodysurfing is related to riding on a wave with no help from aid tools such as a surfboard. That’s why it is called the “purest” form of surfing. In fact, it is one of the very few extreme sports—free climbing and cliff diving are others—that can be practiced using nothing but the human body.
How do you do it?
To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting you and pushing you forwards. Then try and cut along the surface of the wave.
What do you need?
It is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (large flat rubber shoes). This is because they enable you to swim faster and surf along them more easily. A wetsuit is also advisable. Another aid is a handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to speed up along the wave. If you are lucky enough to be surfing in warm water, make sure you have your boardshorts (冲浪短裤) at the ready.
Unofficial world championships
Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, but in Hawaii there is such a festival called the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic each year. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan and France. Famous bodysurfer Mike Stewart has won the event no fewer than 12 times, and Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer in history, has also competed.
