Bees are being trained to do the job of sniffer(嗅)dogs in Scotland, UK. And they could be ready to get to work in five years, saving many people’s lives.

By using sugar water as reward, the researchers have been teaching bees to recognize the smell of explosives(炸药)as though it was nectar(花蜜)from a flower. The bees can detect the smell of explosives, which are used to make bombs. They can detect the landmines from about 100 m distance but that should go up to kilometres. It should happen immediately once they’re trained and sent out.

Landmines are a type of bomb hidden just below the surface of the ground, so that a per-son walking or a car driving on it sets it off. When landmines are used in wars, the land is not safe for people to return to after the war is over until all the landmines have been cleared.

In the trials, as soon as the bees are sent out of the hive, they settle almost instantly on the spot where a landmine is. Bees have an advantage in that they cannot accidentally set off landmines and can cover ground not readily accessible for dogs. When the bees find the explosives but no reward of nectar they quickly realize they have been fooled and stop detecting the explosives. They get used to it so they realize after a couple of days that they have been hoodwinked. Every few days you have to retrain them but hopefully by that time they have found the explosives.

There has been a similar trial of bees detecting explosives in the US. Bees can also be trained to sniff out drugs, chemicals and radioactive substances. Training and keeping bees is quicker and cheaper than training dogs. They are considered at least as sensitive as dogs, and dogs are known to underperform when poorly treated.

1. Why should landmines be cleared after war?
A.They are too dangerous to soldiers.
B.The army gets them back to reuse.
C.They cause pollution to the soil.
D.People need to go back to their normal life.
2. What is the disadvantage of bees in their work?
A.They can’t access everywhere.B.They can set off landmines.
C.They must be trained continually.D.They consume too much nectar.
3. What does the underlined word hoodwinked" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Selected.B.Adopted.C.Experienced.D.Cheated.
4. What is the author's attitude to the bees' new job?
A.Critical.B.Positive.
C.Suspicious.D.Unconcerned.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,恐龙虽然已经灭绝,但仍具有研究意义,科学家们一直在探索如何科学地测量恐龙。

【推荐1】Weighing a dinosaur is no easy task. These extinct creatures were massive, and for the most part, all that remains are their bones, as their organs and skin have long since disappeared. However, new research has found more than one way to measure the mass of these creatures.

In a paper published recently in Biological Reviews, scientists evaluated the two existing ways that calculate how much a Tyrannosaurus rex (翻王龙) might have weighed. Led by Nicolas Campione from the University of New England, they examined an extensive database of dinosaur body mass estimates from as far back as 1905, with weight estimates for an individual ranging from 3 tons to 18 tons.

In an essay published by The Conversation, Campione explains that for years, scientists followed two rival (对立的) approaches for calculating a dinosaur’s weight. These methods were long thought to be at odds with each other, but Campione’s team found that both techniques are actually quite accurate.

Using limb circumference (肢体周长) to work out an animal’s mass is already widely used across a variety of modern land animals. The same method can be applied to dinosaurs. Researchers essentially measure the bones in living animals, such as the femur (股骨) in an elephant’s leg, and compare that figure to a dinosaur’s femur.

The second method involves calculating the volume of 3D reconstructions of dinosaurs, which serve as approximations (近似值) of what the creature would have looked like when it was still alive. Occasionally, these methods have come to very different conclusions.

David Evans, a researcher at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, says it’s important to use both methods because dinosaurs, like humans, did not come in one neat package. “There will always be uncertainty around our understanding of long-extinct animals, and their weight is always going to be a source of it,” he says in a statement. “Our new study suggests we are getting better at weighing dinosaurs, and it’s paving the way for more realistic dinosaur body-mass estimation in the future.”

1. Why is it difficult to weigh dinosaurs?
A.Almost all they left are their bones.B.They have long disappeared.
C.There is no more than one way to find their bones.D.Their organs and skin are too light.
2. Which idea may Campione agree with?
A.Measuring a living animal is not challenging.
B.Either existing technique is quite precise to weigh a dinosaur.
C.There is only one way to calculate a dinosaur’s weight.
D.Existing ways to weigh a dinosaur are at odds with each other.
3. How can one accurately measure the dinosaurs according to David Evans?
A.By measuring limb circumference.
B.By combining different methods together.
C.By working out 3D reconstructions of dinosaurs.
D.By comparing the figure of a living animal to a dinosaur femur.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Weigh a Dinosaur Properly
B.The Way to Distinguish the Types of Dinosaurs
C.What Equipment to Be Used in Estimating a Dinosaur
D.The Method of Getting Accurate Data About Dinosaurs

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了“我”在开车时发现了一只海龟,在帮助它时却伤害了它,所以“我”决定向专业人士请教如何正确地帮助海龟的故事。

【推荐2】One night, as I was driving down the road, I found something was sitting in the middle of the road. A few seconds later, I realized I was looking at a large turtle (海龟). Afraid of it being crashed by cars, so I pulled over, ran across the road and dragged the turtle to safety. But I’d made one big mistake.

I had heard that the best way to pick up a turtle without hurting it was picking it by the tail in order not to get bitten. So I’d made that big mistake. While the turtle turned out OK generally, I was determined to figure out how to move a turtle properly. I needed to find someone who dealt with turtles. I found the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. I talked to Dr. Sue, its Executive and Medical Director.

Dr. Sue told me that the organization dealt with a number of aspects of turtle conservation, including rescue, settlement, birth programs, research, and education. Sue explained that southern Ontario is home to a vast majority of turtles in Canada, but is also one of the vastest road networks of the country.

“Ninety percent of injured turtles brought in are caused by cars. These turtles spend a lot of time on land. And they do travel many kilometers on land for a variety of reasons, to find a nesting spot, or to hang out for the summer or winter. Turtles know where they want to go. So, just keep them going in the direction they want to go and you may have saved a turtle’s life,” Dr. Sue said.

Once an injured turtle arrives at the center, there are medical facilities (设备) ready to go, including an X-ray machine. That’s when the team gets to work with healing injuries, and help their patient.

1. Why did the author stop the car?
A.To help the turtle.B.To see the thing clearly.
C.To prevent a car accident.D.To find something good.
2. What happened to the turtle?
A.It got hurt by people before.B.It was injured a little bit.
C.It was run over by a car.D.It lost its direction.
3. What did Dr. Sue suggest at last?
A.Leaving the turtles alone.
B.Making Ontario home to turtles.
C.Changing the road conditions.
D.Helping turtles find nesting spots.
4. What does the underlined word “patient” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.The director.B.The driver.
C.The author.D.The turtle.

【推荐3】Most dog owners know that feeding chocolate to their furry friend is a big no-no. Well, one animal hospital in Alabama believes that “no dog should go to heaven without tasting chocolate.”

Smiths Station Animal Hospital posted a photo to their Facebook page of a jar of Hershey Kisses with the words “Goodbye Kisses” painted on the side. There was also a note from one of the hospital’s doctors that read, “This jar is reserved for our euthanasia (安乐死) appointments...because no dog should go to heaven without tasting chocolate.”

“We try to provide as much comfort as possible during a terribly difficult and emotional time. My staff has always kept little snacks and candy bars around specifically for those appointments,” Dr. Nicole Namie, told WRBL. “Typically, these are treats that I wouldn’t recommend giving to my patients, but in their final moments, I think it’s important to offer them something special.”

“We always give them something to make them feel good and to enjoy the last few minutes,” Jennifer Williams, practice manager at Smiths Station Animal Hospital told Newsweek. She said given that the hospital is in a small community, the staff and doctors become attached to the pets and when it comes time to say goodbye it’s heartbreaking for everyone.

The response to the post has been overwhelming, she said, and the best part has been having people from around the world share their own stories. “It has really turned into a really sweet post,” Williams said. “There is no hate speech on it. Everyone is just showing compassion for each other.” The post has since been shared over 113,000 times on Facebook and made its way to TikTok and Reddit feeds too.

1. What do the underlined words “Hershey Kisses” refer to in Paragraph 2?
