I was working and living in Switzerland for a few years. My big hobby then was windsurfing on the big lakes nearby. Unfortunately, to get wind in the mountains, you often needed to wait for a storm to pass by.
Late one afternoon. I was out windsurfing with about ten other friends on just such a day when it started getting really windy, too much to handle. I thought about heading in, as I was about a mile offshore on this big lake. But then the sirens(警报器)on the shore started sounding and flashing that a major storm was headed our way. About half the guys made it to the beach while those remaining. including me, hung onto our boards in the water trying to swim to shore. It started getting dark quickly and the wind blew even harder. This storm was going to be a big one.
A rescue boat was sent out from a nearby harbor ad luckily managed to drag everyone except me back to shore. I was a little further out than the others and all my waving and screaming was now lost in the roaring wind. I was beginning to panic while I helplessly looked on and watched the rescue boat getting stuck by breaking waves while looking for me. My friends onshore knew I was out there and were doing everything they could to help find me.
It was now dark and I was being blown further offshore than ever. I eventually saw the search lights go out on the rescue boat and head back in to the harbor as it was too dangerous to continue. They had given up the search for me. I was now all alone, The storm was getting stronger and the board started flipping(迅速翻动)across the white water by itself as I desperately tried to hold to it.
Then it happened. A wave of relief came over me. as I realized there was no one left to help me. I could only rely on myself. I had to be the rescuer, not the victim.

Laila lived with her mom and her grandparents in a small house. She is a humble girl who loves to smile and always helps people. Her dad died years ago in a car accident. It was a really hard time for her and the family. But life must go on. She always remembers what her dad told her, she must be a good girl, smart and humble. She missed her daddy every single day. Every morning, her mother made all kinds of traditional snacks and sold them in front of their house and cleaned up their neighbours’ houses to fulfill their needs. Laila wanted to be a ballerina (芭蕾舞演员). She loves dancing. But her mother told her that it’s impossible, because they have no money. Laila said, “I will become a ballerina, someday.”
One morning, Laila was playing in the garden next to her house, alone. She danced beautifully and tried to catch a butterfly until she saw an old man who walked too fast and suddenly fell into a drain (下水道). Laila ran to help him but it was too deep and she could not raise the old man. Laila ran to her house, told her mother about the old man and they ran again so fast, to help him. Her mother tried to ask him his name. Meanwhile, Laila called the others. His name is Grandpa Rudi. He was in recovery time from his heart attack, weeks ago. Laila cried. She just felt so sad about Grandpa injured. His face was bleeding. Laila gave her mom a bottle of water to wash the sand and blood from his face. He said “thank you” to Laila and her mom.
Laila became famous in her school and in her neighborhood. Local newspaper made news about her kindness. The title is “Laila, A Lovely Girl with An Awesome Heart”. All people talked about her. The government heard this great news. They came to her school to give her an invitation to the meeting.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago. She was born with many physical issues affecting her tiny body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it, but she had a strange figure that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
In Emily’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium (观众席) at Christmas. It had been performed for so many years that it had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the townsfolk. Each year, many people tried out for the show, but most were turned away. Only the best performers were invited to take part.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year, she asked Mrs. Owens, her music teacher, if she could join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable too.”
Mrs. Owens sent Emily back through the door of the choral (合唱队的) room without even hearing her sing a single note. Hurt and upset, Emily decided never to try out again. But then Mrs. Owens retired, and the following school year, a new music teacher arrived, named Mr. Butler.
He had heard about Emily and suggested that she give it a try.
Emily didn’t want to be refused again, so she was a little hesitant to say yes. As Emily struggled with her decision, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler said, “Emily, you’re next.” Although she was nervous, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to do. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her test performance, she thanked Mr Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was worried that she would never fit in. By the next morning, the stress was too much to bear and she started to feel sick.

I was 11 years old when I asked my parents for piano lessons. We were in the impact of the recession (经济衰退). My mother had recently been out of work and so my father became the only bread earner for our family. A polite “no” was the answer.
That didn’t discourage me. I Googled the dimensions of a keyboard, drew the keys onto a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one — keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. After a while I could hear the notes in my head while pressing the keys on the paper. I spent six months playing scales and chord sequences without touching a real piano. Once my mother saw it wasn’t a craze, in spite of the fact that she and father never wished their daughter to work in music, she borrowed some money from family and friends, and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first lesson. I was struck by how noble and elegant the sound of the piano was, as I had become familiar with the artificial electronic sound. The teacher tried to explain where middle C was but I could already play all the major and minor scales (音阶), as well as tonic and dominant functions.
After eight lessons, I obtained the first grade piano certificate (证书). By the time I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again, so I returned to my paper keyboard. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my paper keyboard.
For the grades above that, there’s an expectation that you include a certain sensitivity into your playing. The head of music at my school said I could practice on the school’s grand piano. I would wake up at 5:30 a.m. to get there in time and play until lessons started. I’d skip lunch and then practice after school until the caretaker kicked me out. At home, I’d have dinner, do three hours of revision, and then mental practice until 1 a.m.
