Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. John, an ESL tutor of a community college, moved to New York City with all the members of his family. John is a remarkable teacher, so     1     (be) his students for several years, we all missed him very much since he left. It was not long     2     John came back to North Carolina to handle some rounding-off (结束) affairs, ESL teachers and we students held a small party for him.

At the party,     3    people walked around and talked with each other cheerfully, I certainly would not lightly give up that good opportunity to learn English. Then I tried to think of all sorts of topics to converse with Monica, another ESL teacher.

Just before I was about     4     (run) out of my topics of conversation when I heard John said to others loudly, “I dig New York!” I immediately asked Monica seriously, “Is it really difficult to find a job in New York? Why does John, such     5     outstanding ESL teacher, have to do laborious work?”

Looking puzzled, Monica asked, “Why do you have such a feeling?”

“Haven’t you heard him say that he     6     (dig) New York? Is he building a tunnel?” I replied. When she finally understood     7     I said, Monica laughed so hard as to narrowly escape spewing (喷出) her food in her mouth. Wearing a broad smile, she gestured to us to stop talking, and then asked us, the ESL students,     8     we knew the meaning of “I dig New York.” All of us shook our heads and said no. Monica then requested John to explain it to us.

9     turns out that, in American slang, “I dig New York” means, “I love New York.” Though few people say like that nowadays, we can still find it     10     (use) in literary works.

England became England, the land of English-speaking people, at the beginning of the Middle Ages.     1     that it had been the home of Iron Age Tribes known as Celts, and for a time, part of the Roman Empire. Then beginning in the 400s AD, tribes from the north, known as the angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes,     2     (move) in.

The most famous leader of this time period in England was Alfred the Great. Alfred lived in Wessex, the kingdom of the West Saxons, which     3     (locate) in the southern part of England. He was a good leader     4     made his kingdom stronger. He created a system of defenses (防御),     5     (call) burhs, across the country. He reorganized the army so that his men     6     have time to fight and time to farm. Alfred s efforts protected his people from the Vikings and allowed Wessex to grow. Eventually the rulers of Wessex would rule all of England.

Alfred also made other improvements. He made laws for his people. He encouraged learning and translated several important books     7     his Saxon language. This was     8     modern people think of as the start of the language we call English today.

Two important pieces of literature from that time period are the anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Beowulf, both     9     (write) in old English. Old English lasted through most of the Middle Ages. Middle English came in during the late Middle ages and modern english began about the time of the renaissance.

England and English got their names, not from the Saxons, but from one of the other tribes, and Angles. The original name of England must have been     10     like Angle-land (only in old English of course).

For the past few years, several Internet buzzwords (流行语) have gone popular, “    1    (hero) in harm’s way”; “lying flat”, “nei juan”    2    (include). Why Does Language Preservation Matter?

One language dies every two weeks. This trend isn’t about to go away, either: about half of the world’s languages are at risk of extinction by the year 2100,     1     increasing globalization. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at least 43% of the 6,000 world languages are already endangered. UNESCO created International Mother Language Day, celebrated each year on February 21,     2     (increase) awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and foster international understanding. This holiday reminds us that languages, whether     3     (use) by millions or just one person, have value.

Both social changes and extreme events spur language extinction. For example, about 40% of the world’s population does not have access     4     education in their mother tongue.     5     (feel) pressure to integrate into a more dominant culture, some parents choose only to teach their children a mainstream language.

6     a language disappears, we lose much of the history, culture, and heritage of the people who spoke it.

Latin has long been a dead language,     7     some schools still teach it. There are no native speakers left, no one can tell us     8     it should sound or explain the meaning of certain words and figures of speech.

We     9     take effective measures to retain the knowledge of a community.     10     (get) a head start is especially important for oral languages that don’t have any written records. Governments, professional organizations, and local communities are jointing together to protect and promote linguistic diversity.
