The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. Hunters were shooting antelopes to make profits. Their habitats were becoming     1     (small) as new roads and railways were built. In order to save this species     2     extinction, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night     3     (keep) them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move     4     (easy) and keep them safe from cars and trains.

Hoh Xil or Kekexili is the world’s third     1     (large) uninhabited (无人居住的) area. Many examples of wildlife can     2     (find) in the remote area of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. The view of mountains, glaciers and lakes here     3     (make) it a good place in terms of natural beauty.

At the 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee     4     (hold) in Poland, Hoh Xil was approved    5    a new world heritage site, becoming the 51st world heritage site in China. It is home to more than 230 species of wildlife,    6     (include) the endangered Tibetan antelope. The illegal hunting of Tibet antelope used to be     7     serious problem in the 1990s. The wool of Tibetan antelopes, soft and warm, can be obtained without hurting the animals. But poachers (盗猎者) would choose simply    8     (kill) them before taking the wool,    9     caused the number of Tibetan antelopes to drop rapidly. The struggle to stop illegal hunting was described in the 2004 film Kekexili: Mountain Patrol.

Now that Hoh Xil has made it onto the UNESCO list, it’s believed that the     10     (protect) of the region’s wild animals and special ecosystem will be more effective.

Many people may think it’s ridiculous（可笑的） that animals should have their feelings. As a matter of fact, animals’ feelings are sometimes even     1    (warm) than we can imagine. Savannah, a one-and-a-half-year-old leopard（美洲豹）, and Max,    2     dog who is just a few weeks younger, have become the best friends at Ohio Zoo. They get along quite well with each other and chase after each other all the time cheerfully.    3    Savannah was just 10 weeks old, they have been put together. From then on, their friendship has amazed large numbers of     4     (visit) to the zoo.

Another moving story     5     (occur) in Turkey. Winter     6     (sweep) the Northern Hemisphere, but perhaps no one had been hit as hard by     7    (freeze) temperatures as five donkeys in Turkey. The unattended (无人照顾) donkeys in a small Turkish village     8     (cover) by snow, with icicles(冰柱) hanging off their bodies. Later, a rescue team found the donkeys, some of     9    , however, were so frozen that they couldn’t move and had to be carried away by a truck.

After being housed in a warm shelter, all the donkeys were “defrosted (解冻)” and alive because of their strong     10    (determine).

A group of wild Asian elephants had wandered more than 500 km over the last fifteen     1     (month). Already famous at home, they had received a lot of     2     (globe) attention as well.

Some famous foreign social networking sites were full of clips (节目片断) of the elephants. Clips that showed them leaning (倚靠) together, as well as one clip of two little elephants that fell into ditch (沟渠)     3     (help) by older ones, were particularly popular. "We should be more like the elephant. Taking family vacations and caring for each other are of great     4     (important) in our life”. Lots of policemen     5     (send) to protect the elephants, clear roads,     6     use food to lead them to safe places. They also used drones (无人机) to watch them     7     (close).

“The challenge for authorities is working out     8     needs to be done next. This includes     9     (continue) to provide a safe passage for the elephants back to their Xishuangbanna habitat,” founder of The Elephant said. This came with its own risk, uncertainty and cost which needed to be evaluated further.

An assistant professor at The City University of New York said the event had     10     positive effect. The attitude of Chinese people toward the elephants was not only fascinating, but also offered key lessons for Africa.
