【推荐2】Sitting in the garden for my friend’s birthday. I felt a buzz (振动) in my pocket. My heart raced when I saw the email sender’s name. The email started off: “Dear Mr Green, thank you for your interest” and “the review process took longer than expected.” It ended with “We are sorry to inform you…” and my vision blurred (模糊). The position—measuring soil quality in the Sahara Desert as part of an undergraduate research programme — had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for.

I had put so much time and emotional energy into applying, and I thought the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career.

So I was shocked when, not long after the email, Professor Mary Devon, who was running the programme, invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later I was equally shocked—and overjoyed—when she invited me to talk with her about potential projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn’t seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I was going to give it my all.

I found myself working with a robotics professor on techniques for collecting data from the desert remotely. That project, which I could complete from my sofa instead of in the burning heat of the desert, not only survived the lockdown but worked where traditional methods didn’t. In the end, I had a new scientific interest to pursue.

When I applied to graduate school, I found three programmes promising to allow me to follow my desired research direction. And I applied with the same anxious excitement as before. When I was rejected from one that had seemed like a perfect fit, it was undoubtedly difficult. But this time I had the perspective (视角) to keep it from sending me into panic. It helped that in the end I was accepted into one of the other programmes I was also excited about.

Rather than setting plans in stone, I’ve learned that sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don’t sound perfect at the time, and make the most of them.

1. How did the author feel upon seeing the email sender’s name?
A.Anxious.B.Angry.C.Surprised.D.Settled.
2. According to the author, the project with the robotics professor was ________.
A.demandingB.inspiringC.misleadingD.amusing
3. What can we learn from this passage?
A.An invitation is a reputation.
B.An innovation is a resolution.
C.A rejection can be a redirection.
D.A reflection can be a restriction.

名校
文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了在一家咖啡馆,使用礼貌用语,咖啡可以打折。

【推荐3】I work as a waiter in a café and love the job most of the time. I spend the morning hours with all the coffee and see the friendly customers (顾客) every day. But there’re always those mornings when a few unwanted customers come in. Maybe they are late for work, or simply wake up on the wrong side of the bed. They often make a short loud request (要求) for coffee without looking at me directly. It is hard to stand. And some customers are just discourteous and they believe that customers are always right, even if they act like fools. Things like good manners (礼貌) are often unseen in such situations.

Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. Taking matters into his own hand, to help some customers with their manners, he placed a sign outside showing their new pricing method.

His new sign shows the cost of a coffee as $5. If a customer walks up to the server and simply says, “Small coffee,” he/she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price of a “small coffee, please” goes down to $3. In other words, a nice “please” with a request for a small coffee will drop the price by $2. The coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, “Hello. One small coffee, please.” So you can see that customers that show the most manners get the largest discounts (折扣).

The new strategy (策略) certainly has got some people to rethink their manners given that the news has spread across the world. We can be sure that at least some customers have changed their behavior, and that’s a good thing, even if they do it to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you get used to it. So, this little strategy that the business owner used could actually end up causing many people to be more polite all the time.

1. What does the underlined word “discourteous” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Impolite.B.Proud.C.Confused.D.Busy.
2. Which of the following decides the price of coffee according to Austin’s method?
A.The size of the coffee customers request.
B.The way customers talk to servers.
C.Customers’ understanding of servers’ work.
D.Customers’ relationship with servers.
3. Which word could best describe Austin Simms?
A.Helpful.B.Creative.C.Humorous.D.Responsible.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A.To show he supports Austin’s method.
B.To explain the influence of discounts.
C.To show the importance of politeness.
D.To introduce the future of the café business.
