Italy -Flights to Italy can be quite cheap. On top of that, making your way across the country can be done on a budget by bus or ride-sharing. Keep an eye on tourist tax for your accommodation, as it’s charged on top of the usual tariff (关税). To avoid this, you could give couch-surfing a go.
Slovenia -Perfect for enthusiasts of the great outdoors, Slovenia is famous for its rolling hills and beautiful lakes. You can see most of these for free. Think Switzerland but affordable. It makes for an ideal stop if you’re travelling Europe by train during your gap year.
Argentina - Argentina has it all: mountains, beaches, desert, busy cities and more. Public transport is very affordable and domestic flights aren’t too extremely priced either. While the north is a lot cheaper than the south, it’s worth visiting the Patagonian mountain range during the high season (December to February).
Morocco-From beautiful cities like Marrakesh to the Sahara Desert, Morocco has so much to offer. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune either as the food is very cheap. And you can avoid any over-priced Sahara tours offered on the street by asking your hostel for recommendations.
1. What should you pay special attention to when travelling Italy?A.Flights. | B.Accommodations. | C.Tourist tax. | D.Shared rides. |
A.Italy. | B.Slovenia. | C.Argentina. | D.Morocco |
A.Cheap food. | B.Economical hostels. |

Guangdong Province is set to make swimming lessons compulsory (必修的) in primary schools starting from 2020, proposing (提出) the courses should be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Forum (论坛) readers share their opinions.
White Bear (Poland)
In Poland swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. I think that when it is only possible, there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a life-saving skill.
Mister Panda (France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory (dating back to Charlemagne). I even got my life-saving certificate in school.
Boilermaker (Expert in China)
There are swimming lessons in my city, but I was very disappointed in how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one-hour lesson practicing strokes on dryland. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents scolded the children, telling them they weren’t paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures.
Yunzhang (China)
It is a pity that many Chinese athletes have won world championships in swimming while most schools don’t have the swimming facilities. Swimming is an important life-saving skill that everyone should have access to. The earlier, the better. The government needs to put money into the popularity of the sport.

PASS involves weekly sessions where you work in groups to tackle specially prepared problem sets, based around a unit of study you’re enrolled in.
PASS doesn’t re-teach or deliver new content. It’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the key points from lecture materials while you are applying your skills to solve problems.
You work interactively with your peers. As a peer group, you decide what is covered in each session. That way, PASS directly responds to your needs and feedback.
Registration in Term 2 will open at 9 am, 21 September 2022.
Waiting lists
If a session is full, you can register for the waiting list. We will email you if a place becomes available or if a new session is to be held.
When you are placed on a waiting list, we will email you a number which tells you where you are on the list. If you are close to the front of the list, you have a good chance of gaining a place in the programme in the near future.
Deregistering
If you miss two PASS sessions in a row, you will be deregistered and your place will be given to someone on the waiting list. Make sure you fill in the attendance sheet at each session to record your attendance.
You’ll be informed by email if you are being deregistered as a result of missing sessions. If you believe you have received the email in error, email the PASS office at passoffice@umbs. edu..

A yearly contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year was held in London this year. The contest had 38,575 entries from around the world. Let’s have a scanning of four of this year’s best works.
The great prize this year belonged to Karine Aigner of the US for an incredible shot of a ball of bees. The “ball” was formed with a lot of male bees fighting to win a single female bee. The picture was taken in southern Texas. Ms Aigner says that soon after the picture was taken, a female bee flew off with one of the males.
Dmitry Kokh of Russia won the award for Urban Wildlife. His picture of polar bears in an old house was taken on an island in the Chukchi Sea, between Russia and Alaska. Mr Kokh was on a boat when he noticed polar bears walking through an area where no one had lived for years. To get the picture without disturbing the bears,he used a quiet drone (无人机) to take the picture.
Fernando Constantino Martinez Belmar of Mexico had to wait in the dark in a cave filled with bats and snakes to get the image. Rat snakes in Yucatàn hang from cracks in the ceiling of the cave, hoping to grab one of the many bats that are flying out of the cave for the night. Using a red light that wouldn’t disturb the animals, Mr Martinez Belmar waited until just the right moment to take the picture. He won the Amphibian and Reptile Behavior prize.
Nick Kanakis of the US took the picture of a wood wren (鹧鸪) — a bird that spends most of its time on the ground. The bird has its ear to the ground, listening for insects to catch and eat. After spotting a bird looking for food farther away, he stayed very still to get the shot, which won the prize for Bird Behavior.
1. Why do the bees develop a ball in Ms Aigner’s picture?A.To protect them from being shot. |
B.To struggle to get a female partner. |

I have been in England three months now. I hope you don’t think I’ve forgotten you. There have been so many places to see and so many things to do that I’ve not had much time for writing letters.
I shall soon be starting my studies at King’s College. So far I’ve been learning about England and British ways of living. I won’t tell you about London. There are plenty of books you can read and plenty of pictures you can look at. I’m sure you’ll be more interested to know what I think about the life here.
I find some of the customs(风俗) new and interesting. People here do not shake hands as much as we do in Europe. During the first few weeks I was often surprised because people did not put out their hands when I met them. Men raise their hats to women but not to each other.
Yours
Alice
