An Olympic Village is a place that houses Olympic competitors. It is a place where they prepare for what might be the most important moment in their life. But we want to know more about this mysterious place: What really happens in the village?
We asked swimmer Natalie Coughlin, a three time Olympian and 12 -time medalist. She says, “People think it’s a lot more attractive and interesting than it is. It isn’t. It’s like a huge college campus, including a bank, a salon, a post office, and a huge cafeteria- except that everyone is anxious, getting ready for their biggest event under unbelievably high pressure (压力).”
But some other Olympians look differently at their campus. “It’s like the first day of college,” water polo player Tony Azevedo says. “You’re super excited. Everyone s meeting people and trying to socialize with others,”
Coughlin says the best spot to be in the village is the cafeteria. Not only does it provide a place to talk with the rest of the athletes from your country but it’s a great chance for people watching. One of her favorite games was to tell what sport someone in front of her took based on their body type.
Living in the same village means athletes run into one another all the time. Coughlin shares this story: While in London in 2012, at one point applause (欢呼) broke out at the arrival of someone. Coughlin thought it was one of the British royals (王室成员), but it ended up being Jamaica’s Usain Bolt (the world’s greatest runner alive). Runner Allyson Felix— a winner of six gold Olympic medals— has also had her run-ins. In 2008, she came across the world-famous U. S. men’s basketball team, including Anthony, Bryant, Wade and other top players.
It’s “a pretty wild scene, the biggest melting pot— a place where large numbers of people, ideas, and cultures are mixed together— you’ve been in,” said swimmer Eric Shanteau. Felix agrees, saying, “You get to meet people from other countries that you wouldn’t even come into contact with. To me that’s the coolest thing.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the most popular events in the Winter Olympic Games.
Figure skating
Figure skating is one of the most popular sports at the Winter Olympics, in which ice skaters, singly or in pairs, perform freestyle movements of jumps, spins, lifts, and footwork in a graceful manner. The figure skating competition is one of the strongest at the Winter Olympics-one slight error, and a competitor’s chance of a medal goes up in smoke. To win the game, the skater has to be perfect.
Curling

The two teams take turns to slide large round flat stones towards a target. Members of each team use brooms to sweep the surface of the ice in the path of the stone to control its speed and direction. And while curling may be a “slow” sport, it’s still full of skill and excitement!
Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a popular winter sport that involves sliding downhill on snow with a snowboard firmly attached to a rider’s feet. The sport is said to have been inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding. While snowboarding is one of the newer events-first included at the 1998 Winter Olympics, it has become one of the most popular and exciting sports at the Winter Olympics.
Ice hockey
Ice hockey is a game between two teams who wear skates and compete on an ice rink (溜冰场). Each team usually has six players. The object is to push the puck (冰球) past a goal line and into a net guarded by a goalkeeper. Ice hockey is popular for its speed and frequent physical contact. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my firs P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. I was all about the batter against my own body and mind. A test of will!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3.1 passed sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), 1 can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

The rise of smart phones has seen an increase in the use of instant messaging apps. The apps offer a cheap alternative to traditional texts. Using wireless internet connections, people can send a number of messages to their friends at a very low cost. Unlike traditional mobile texts, the users usually only have to pay to download the app once, after which each message they send is free.
Instant messaging apps have become popular all over the world. Hundreds of millions of people use the apps to chat with their friends. These apps allow people to send pictures messages for free---something which previously was quite costly. Many of these apps also allow users to have access to a huge range of colourful emotions, which can help people express their emotions.
The research company Informa said that almost 19 billion messages were sent per day using chat apps last year, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts. And it expects the chat app market to grow to 50 billion per day by 2015. So does this really mean the end of communicating by texting?
Pamela Clark-Dickson from Informa doesn’t think so. She says that there are a large number of people who use normal mobile phones, particularly in developing countries and prefer the SMS messaging tool. For the moment, these users still find that SMS is the best messaging experience for them.

Truly, teenage kids possess an in born knowledge of grammatical structures that these kids could not probably have learned. The idea that principles of grammar are fixed into people’s minds was initially mentioned by Noam Chomsky, a popular linguist. He said, kids do not grasp the way to talk from mothers or fathers or from anybody else; instead they learn by using their inherent(固有的) skills of grammar. As a result, Chomsky thought, every learning has the exact basic fundamental construction.
A key opinion of Chomsky for that has been the stimulus’ poverty(贫乏), which shows that kids grasp noun and verb constructions they could not have grasped by learning. For instance, to change the sentence “the unicorn(独角兽) was inside the garden” to an inquiry, you need to just shit the “was” to the top of the question. But, for the sentence “the unicorn which was eating the flower was inside the garden,” people need to restructure further than only the initial “was” to change the sentence to an inquiry. For making a correct sentence in terms of grammar, you need to shit the 2nd “was”. Chomsky rightly stated that kids would not have the error of misusing the first method for forming an inquiry to the 2nd, more difficult sentence. In later trials, no children shifted the in correct “was” although there were phrases they possibly did not hear before.
Additionally, deaf children use the right grammatical structure with signs even though they have not studied that before. Psychologists observed a deaf child called Simon. The child’s deaf mother and father just grasped signs in adulthood, hence made numerous grammatical mistakes. In contrast, Simon did not have those mistakes, despite just being exposed to his parents’ pattern of sign language. The only approach to explaining that has been that Simon possessed an inherent grammatical understanding that excluded him from having the same errors as his parents.
1. Which of the following statements may Noam Chomsky agree with?A.It’s better to learn grammar at an earlier age. |
B.Teachers impact their students’ language skills most. |
C.All people are naturally gifted language learners. |
D.It’s necessary to grasp language skills in class. |
A.between nouns and verbs in a sentence |
B.between simple and complex sentence structures |
C.between descriptive sentences and inquiry sentences |
D.between acquired language and inherent language abilities |
A.They all misplaced the first “was”. |
B.They didn’t misuse the first method. |
C.They all put the second “was” back ward. |
D.They were confused by the unfamiliar phrases. |
A.By listing some figures. | B.By providing some examples. |
C.By giving the exact definition. | D.By explaining his former study. |

Horses and oxen were the main means of transportation in Brooks's time—where there are animals, there is manure(粪肥).So there were piles of manure that needed removing regularly. The task of street sweeping was not carried out by machines, but workers sweeping garbage with a broom into a container. This method clearly required a lot of labor, although it did provide employment.
That changed when mechanical street sweepers were invented by Joseph Whitworth in England and C. S. Bishop in the USA, which were still drawn by horses as Bishop's design was dragged behind horses. Later Brooks made some changes—a truck with revolving brushes that swept the litter into a hopper(漏斗). The revolving brushes were attached to the front part of the truck and could be replaced by scrapers for snow removal in winter.
Brooks also designed an improved container for sorting garbage as well as a wheel drive for the automatic turning of the brushes and for powering a lifting mechanism for the scrapers. It's not known whether his design was produced and marketed. The patent number 556711 was issued on March 17tn, 1896. The motor-driven pickup street sweeper was later developed by John M. Murphy for the Elgin Sweeper Company, which first appeared in 1913.
1. Why was much labor involved in street sweeping in Brooks' time?A.Because manure needed clearing at times. |
B.Because workers took it to support their families. |
C.Because it was done by hand. |
D.Because there was much ticket litter on the streets. |
A.It was pulled by a horse. |
B.It offered more working opportunities. |
C.It could do a timely cleanup of manure. |
D.It was fixed to the front of a truck. |
