Amazon has made a new version(版本)of its cheapest Kindle e-reader with an improved screen and a reading light, a feature previously held back for its more expensive e-readers.
Costing $10 more than the previous generation, at $69.99, the new Kindle has a 6in e-ink display with an adjustable front light to make the screen readable in the dark. “Customers consistently tell us how much they appreciate having a front light on Kindle e-readers so they can read in any environment, ” said Erie Saarmio, the European head of Amazon e-readers. He added that this was the first Kindle under S100 with a built-in adjustable front light.
The new Kindle not only has a similar light to the Kindle Paperwhite, but also mirrors its design from 2015. It is 8. 7mm thick, making it 0. 4mm thinner than the previous version, but it weighs 174g instead of 16lg now. Amazon says its size and weight till make it easy to read while holding in one hand. The new Kindle also relinquishes the previous touch system for a more modern touch screen, the same technology used in smart phones and Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite, which should be more responsive. Amazon says the redesigned e-reader still has a six-week battery life based on 30 minutes of reading a day with Wi-Fi turned off.
Amazon’s audiobooks(有声读物), first introduced with the Kindle Oasis in 2016, can also be used in the new Kindle. It has enough storage(存储)to hold 14 audiobooks or thousands of e-books as is standard with Amazon’s e-readers.

The iPhone maker said that it would no longer tell how many iPhones, iPads and Macs it sells each quarter, claiming the figure was no longer relevant to investors. The announcement, combined with a forecast for the vital Christmas quarter, sent shares falling by more than 7 percent in after-hours trading, knocking over $70 billion off its value. If maintained, the drop means Apple’s value has fallen below the trillion-dollar mark for the first time since it reached the milestone in August.
Apple’s fall come despite it posting record profits and sales after it convinced consumers to buy more expensive versions of the iPhone in the three months to the end of September. During this period, it sold 46. 9 million iPhones, flat on the same period last year and below what analysts had expected. However, a huge increase in the price of each phone meant that iPhone revenues (收益) increased by 29 percent. On average, consumers now pay $793 for each iPhone, up from $618 a year ago.
Apple has successfully pushed its users into paying more for newer versions of its iPhone by adding new features and bigger screen sizes, even as sales growth has decreased. Revenues in the quarter increased by 20 percent to $62.9 billion, while profits were up 32 percent to $14.1 billion. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, said sales had been disappointing in some emerging markets such as India, Turkey and Brazil.
Apple sold fewer Mac computers and iPads than a year ago, but said revenues from its software division had increased by 17 percent. Apple said it would continue to say how much revenue it makes from each of its product lines, which it claimed was a more relevant figure than unit sales.

★ Spectacular value!

The typical price per piece of Lego has been slightly more than $10 since 2005. At $101 for 160 pieces, this set is about $ 0.6 per piece. It is a great deal.
But there are some downsides: no wheels, bushes, trees, grass, technic elements and that sort of thing. This is otherwise a fantastic starter set.
★ A great deal!

I got this set as a Black Friday deal for an amazing $30! I wanted 2 sets but they were gone before I could even get my hands on one. A very nice man gave me a spare that he grabbed. It’s huge, strong and well-made. The box is about 2 feet tall and is strong enough for a storage option. I will absolutely be looking to get another set one day!

The pilot project called Corvid Cleaning comes from The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation and aims to lower the cost of street cleaning in the city of Sodertalje.
Founder Christian Gunther-Hansen thought crows would be the best choice because they are very clever. “They are easier to teach and there is also a higher chance for them to learn from each other,” he told Swedish news agency TT. “At the same time, they have a lower risk of eating any rubbish by mistake”.
The birds are trained through a step-by-step process to pick up rubbish and place it into a machine that offers them food.
Tomas Thernstrom, a waste expert for the Sodertalje Municipality, said one of the most interesting things about the project was that crows could be taught to pick up cigarette butts but humans can’t learn not to throw them on the ground in the first place.

B.Because crows like eating cigarette butts. |
C.Because there are plenty of crows in Sweden. |
D.Because people there are interested in crows. |

A.To train crows to collect cigarette butts. |
B.To set up the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation. |
C.To lower the costs of street cleaning. |

A.It’s difficult to train crows to pick up rubbish on the ground. |
B.It’s difficult to stop people from throwing away rubbish everywhere. |
C.It’s interesting to train crows to pick up rubbish on the ground. |
D.People who throw away rubbish everywhere are not as clever as crows. |

Many people wrongly believe that factors like hunger or boredom and depression are the main causes of overeating, but their research has shown otherwise. It is thought that we overeat if the food is good or if we’re really hungry. In reality, those are two of the last things that determine how much we eat.
In one experiment, the researcher placed jars of candies in workers’ offices for a month. Then, he moved the candies 1.8 m away. The office workers ate five more candies each day when the jar was closer to them, equaling an additional 125 calories a day. It does not sound too bad, but add that up over a year and you will have gained 5.4 kg. “If something is visible, every time we see it, we have to make a decision: to eat it or not?” the researcher explained.
In the other experiment, moviegoers were given five-day-old popcorn, some in medium-size buckets, some in large buckets. The researcher found that moviegoers who had the larger buckets ate 53 percent more, despite its unpleasant taste. He believes that the distraction of the movie and hearing others eat the popcorn persuade people to keep eating.
The findings in other researches have shown that we tend to eat more when we use larger dishes, eat in front of the television, or dine with someone who eats a lot. Researchers of the lab advise a gradual approach in changing eating habits. People can cut a couple of hundred calories a day by doing things such as avoiding open food dishes at the office, using smaller serving bowls, sitting next to the slowest eater and being the last one to start eating.
1. What is the truth shown by the study?A.We eat more when the food is good. |
B.People tend to eat a lot when they dine out. |
C.Feeling depressed leads us to overeat. |
D.Hunger is not the key factor in overeating. |
A.People turn to more candies for more energy. |
B.Office workers eat more candies due to visibility. |
C.Moviegoers eat more popcorn because it is tasty. |
D.People keep eating popcorn to enjoy the movie. |
A.Dining with slim persons. | B.Eating while watching films |
C.Using smaller dishes. | D.Starting eating earlier. |

Tigers are different from others in the cat family: they like water and often jump into rivers to swim. Some tigers live in very cold places in North Korea, Russia and China. Other tigers live in warmer places—in India and parts of Southeast Asia.
But now all tigers are in danger. Some people kill tigers to use their skins for clothes, and their bodies for medicine. There is also less and less land for tigers to live in.
