With the rapid growth of the aging population in China, the installation of elevators in old communities has gradually become an inevitable issue. A lot of neighborhoods are living no longer     1     due to the living ills of their six-story, elevator-less buildings.

The greatest concern is the price. Residents in old communities have been at odds with one another regarding how to most effectively distribute the necessary money with which to pay for the installation of elevators. For those living on higher floors, however, the lack of elevator can often be quite     6    , especially for the elderly. Each year, the bright light of the Nobel Prize in literature falls across our cultural canvas and illuminates the work of a major writer.

While     1     of previous years have gone to writers of prose, poetry and drama, the Swedish Academy, which awards the prize, announced on Oct 13 that American singer Bob Dylan, 75, was this year’s winner. However, the prize wasn’t given for his 2004 self-penned autobiography, but “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

It is certainly a(n)     2     choice. According to Steve Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, arts awards have almost always exclusively had an inherent bias toward so-called “high culture”, a category     3     not to include people who got their start singing in coffeehouses.

Dylan experts can battle over whether or not the singer indeed writes poetry–he was given the prize for his lyrics and music.

If music and lyrics count as literature, as plays have done, could not other forms? Could we, someday, see a Nobel in literature go to US TV producer David Simon, Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, or even US singer Beyonce?

Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was primarily known for his Chinese ink-and-wash painting of horses and birds. He was one of the first Chinese artists to articulate the need for artistic expressions that     1     a new modern China at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also     2     as one of the first to create monumental oil paintings with Chinese     3    -a show of his high proficiency (熟练) in an essential Western art technique. Xu Beihong showed his     5     at a very early age. He studied classic Chinese works and calligraphy with his father when he was six, and Chinese painting when he was nine. He travelled to Tokyo in 1917 to study arts. When he returned to China, he began to teach at Peking University’s School of Art at the     6     of Cai Yuanpei. Beginning in 1919, Xu studied overseas in Paris, where he studied oil painting and drawing. His travels around Western Europe     7     him to observe and imitate Western art techniques. In 1933, Xu Beihong organized an exhibition of modern Chinese paintings. DuringWorld War Ⅱ, Xu travelled to Southeast Asia, holding exhibitions in Singapore and India. All the proceeds (收入) from these exhibitions went to Chinese people who were     8     as a result of the war.

Xu Beihong enjoyed massive support from art collectors across Asia. Between 1939 and 1941, he held solo exhibitions in different places to help raise funds for the war relief effort in China.
