It was late on a Saturday afternoon. A young boy and his father were sitting quietly, watching the snow fall.

“Son, you see every snowflake is different, but when they are all together, they are so beautiful.” Dad, smiling, turned to his son, “Just like people. God makes every one of us different.”

Then came a question. “If people are like snowflakes, unique and special, how could they get along?”

Dad sat there for a moment, thinking. “Choice,” he said. “One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the gift of choice. Different as we all are, we have one thing in common. We can choose what we do, how we dress, where we live, and how we treat each other.”

“But some people don’t get along. So their choice is a bad thing?” the boy asked.

“Oh, no. Only when they choose the wrong things.”

“How do we know what’s right and what’s wrong?”

Without a word, Dad began to work with the snow. First he made several snowballs. And then he placed three of them on top of each other.

“It’s a snowman!” the boy shouted with excitement. “Those that made the snowman did the right thing.”

“Yes, these three came together and joined in an effort to build up mankind,” Dad said.

Then he held his boy tightly and said, “I pray to God that your world will learn to work and live together.”

The boy leaned back in the comfort and protection of his father’s arms, and said, “I will make the right choice. I will learn to build the best snowman ever.”

1. What was the weather like in the story?
2. What do people have in common according to Dad?
3. How did Dad show the right choice with the snowballs?
4. What does “the right choice” in the underlined sentence mean?
5. What do you think of the father in the text?

【推荐1】How to Be Creative During Difficult Times

When we are struggling, or when we have a hard time focusing, we may turn to others for help. We may even wish we had a hero to help us. Well, today we offer you some advice.

Turn yourself into your own hero!

That is the idea behind Kendra Levin's self-help book The Hero Is You. When you make yourself a hero, you get not only a focus but also a purpose.     1     For example, it can give us hope as stories often do. In stories, writers often give their hero, the main person in the story, a purpose.     2

Write out your task and idea.

In stories, heroes also have a task—what they want to achieve—and an idea—what they see for themselves. Levin suggests that we write out our task and idea, not just for a project but for our lives as well. With a clear task and an idea, events in our lives no longer feel like separate events.     3     There's just a lot of value in having a task and an idea.

Know your advantages and weaknesses.

4    In difficult times, we can make our lives easier by focusing on our advantages. It is even more important to identify weaknesses. All heroes have them. On their journey they face their weaknesses and learn from them.

Have small goals within a larger goal.

Levin tells us that the hero's journey is not a one-time thing.     5     So, she suggests having small goals that you can measure in some way. Our life's journey is ongoing and ever-changing. We should be realistic with our goals and be kind to ourselves, especially during difficult times.

A.You can never really finish all tasks.
B.They become a part of our larger story.
C.It is a journey you are on your whole life.
D.When we know our advantages, we can use them fully.
E.Making ourselves the hero in our own story helps us in many ways.
F.The more we know about the world, the better we understand ourselves.
G.Levin suggests we do the same for ourselves and identify our purpose.

【推荐2】This month I finally lived my dream: I visited behind the scenes at Disneyland, “the happiest place on Earth.” Watching thousands of smiling employees rushing, around the park, completely absorbed in their work, I suddenly understood the magic behind the park and why joy had escaped me for so long.

When I was younger, I tried to pursue happiness directly by creating as many happy moments as I could. However, no matter how many happy moments I had, they could not protect me from sadness. The sadness would unexpectedly arise when it shouldn’t when I was with friends or family, when I had achieved success, and when I tried to create art. It was the persistence (持续) of this sadness that finally made me realize the truth: the Happy/Sad model was wrong.

I updated my mental model to the Pleasure/Pain model. I saw that what I had called happiness was simply emotional pleasure, which was anything that confirmed the way I saw myself and the world. As I removed emotionally and physically painful moments from my life, I established a mental image of myself as a “happy person.” However, I was stuck in a one-dimensional emotional world.

Wandering down the 19th street and waving to the 100th friendly costumed character, I finally found the words that completed my third model — Joy/Fear, one that gives real depth to life. Disneyland, with its immersive (沉浸式的) world and perfect performances, goes beyond creating happiness and lessening pain. It is carefully getting rid of fear. It removes the possibility of anything going wrong, of disappointing us. And behind the scenes, Disneyland works tirelessly to ensure that everything always run the way it should.

Life is not Disneyland, however. Try as we might, we can’t control the world around us or completely erase our fearful moments. But we can control how we approach life and how we understand our fears. And in the absence of that fear, joy arises.

1. What gives the author a deep insight into happiness at Disneyland?
A.The beautiful scenes of Disneyland.
B.The relaxing working environment.
C.The smiling and committed staff.
D.The magical life principle.
2. The author was unhappy when younger because he/she __________.
A.had no close friends
B.didn’t get along well with family
C.achieved no success in the art creation
D.misunderstood the true meaning of happiness
3. What does the author think of his/her second mental model?
A.It is entirely subjective.
B.It gives real depth to life.
C.It focuses on temporary joy.
D.It highlights the external state.
4. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Disneyland is a magical and joyful place.
B.Emotional pleasure is the key to happiness.
C.Fear is inevitable for all of us in the whole life.
D.Approaching life with devotion brings genuine joy.

【推荐3】“Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. ” This is dedicated to my first-year self four years ago, who was addicted to getting good grades, and failed to seek the happiness found in everything else that college has to offer.

Like some people, I grew up with a family that valued academics over all else, who gave you a little extra love when you were doing great in your classes, and took it away when you didn’t. As a result, my self-worth became tied to my academic success. As an international student, I sometimes felt our parents didn’t quite understand the heavy academic weight.

There is a difference between trying to always better yourself for yourself, and simply putting too much on your plate until you burn out from attempting to live up to certain expectations. We should all strive to do the former, but unfortunately our mindsets have been always wired to follow the latter.

I used to believe school killed the creative spirit inside all of us, but as I get older and further into my academic career, I find that it is we who make the choice to kill that creative spirit. I am definitely not saying that you should throw your GPA out of the window and go painting all day. However, we should all try to develop a long-sighted perspective on how we want to shape our lives. Take some classes on topics that you’re genuinely interested in learning about, not just passing. Join clubs or work on projects that resonate with you and push you beyond your boundaries. And most of all, accept the fact that failure and loss are sometimes inevitable in life.

I promise you, when you look back at these four years, you will not remember the good grades or the bad grades, but you will hold in your memory the connections you made with people, the things that inspired you to create and the times you learned something special. And so I ask you now, what do you want to get out of college?

1. Who is the author of the passage?
A.A professor.B.A freshman.C.A parent.D.A graduate.
2. What did the author’s parents stress most on his college life?
A.Seeking happiness.B.Getting good grades.
C.Building self-worth.D.Developing various interests.
3. What is bettering ourselves for according to the author?
A.To be a better self.B.To realize our dreams.
C.To push our boundaries.D.To live up to others’ expectations.
4. Which of the following may the author probably agree with?
A.Academic growth helps to promote creativity.
B.Students themselves have a say in their hobbies.
C.Failures can be avoided with more efforts put in.
D.School is to blame for killing students’ creativity.
