Francis and Roberta Doiron, a couple married 72 years, spent more than a year apart due to COVID—19. Now, they are finally reunited.
Francis and Roberta Doiron have a love that lasts. But due to COVID—19, Francis was unable to visit his wife in her nursing home, and the two have been physically apart for over a year.
“I went there every day,” Francis says while being interviewed at his house. “I saw her from 6:30 in the morning to 6:30 at night. 7 days a week.”
And the couple’s separation has been increasingly hard for them. “She’s losing her memory more often because I’m not there,” says Francis about Roberta.
They have been able to use FaceTime over the last year to communicate. But for a couple married 72 years, it is still not the same as being in the same room as your sweetheart.
Thankfully, after a year apart, the couple is finally able to reunite in person! With both of them being fully vaccinated (接种疫苗), the two were able to have such a sweet and emotional reunion at Roberta’s nursing home. And Francis can now visit her regularly. “I’m getting to hoping that once I get to see her more often, I can bring her memory back,” he says.
And after sharing their first hug in a while and holding hands next to each other, Francis is hopeful about the future and things to come.
“Things aren’t that bad,” he says. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Now that I am no longer young, I have friends whose mothers have passed away. I have heard these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers until it was too late to tell them.
I am blessed with the dear mother who is still alive. I appreciate her more each day. My mother does not change, but I do. As I grow older and wiser, I realize what an extraordinary person she is. How sad that I am unable to speak these words in her presence, but they flow easily from my pen.
How does a daughter begin to thank her mother for life itself? For the love, patience, and just plain hard work that go into raising a child? For running after a toddler, for understanding a moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything? For waiting for the day when a daughter realizes her mother really is?
How does a grown woman thank for a mother for continuing to be a mother? For being ready with advice (when asked) or remaining silent when it is most appreciated? For not saying “I told you so”, when she could have uttered these words dozens of times? For being essentially herself-loving, thoughtful, patient and forgiving?
I don’t know how, dear God, except to bless her as richly as she deserves and to help me live up to the example she has set. I prey that I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother looks in mine.
A daughter

The year was 1933 when Ed VanderWal's father first stepped onto the farm. Now 80 years later, Ed carries the passion(热情) his father gave him for farming every day while working the fields on the family farm in Volga.
“Well, I was in the first grade when my dad moved here to this farm and I grew up on the farm. And that's what I was interested in doing more,” Ed said. But that love of working the land didn't stop with Ed. He's passed it down to his six sons. Some of them run farms of their own now, but two of them, Scott and David, still work side by side with their dad every day.
Some people might worry that working sun up to sun down with family seven days a week would lead to a few family spats(争吵). But for the VanderWals, the constant time together works just fine.
“When families work together on a farm, it's a challenge at times getting along. Everyone has to pull their weight and do their share. And that, of course, transfers from one generation to the next,” Scott said.
And while they all get along like any family, with good days and bad, it's tradition that keeps each generation teaching the next.
“But we taught them to work with animals at a young age, like most farmers do. So it's nice to be able to pass that tradition onto the next generation,” Scott said.
The youngest generation of the VanderWals, Ed's three grandsons and a granddaughter, all started learning farming techniques at a young age.

Karina Chikitova, who clung (抱着) on to her loyal puppy, fought to stay alive in a forest full of brown bears and wolves. The promising ballerina celebrates her 10th birthday on Boxing Day and has already won the Mini Miss Yakutia contest.
In August 2014 she was found after a dozen days and nights lost in the remote taiga, sleeping on a bed of long grass and eating wild berries to stay alive. Karina had followed her father into the woods but he had no idea she was trailing him. Then just four years old, she hugged her puppy Naida for warmth in the shivering (颤抖的) cold before the dog found its way home to a remote village, urging rescuers not to give up, and to go and find the little girl.
Karina’s trial was seen as so remarkable that a statue was erected (竖起) of her and the dog in regional capital Yakutsk. “I want to become a ballerina and dance Swan Lake,” she said. “I have also learned how to play the piano.” Bilingual Karina is doing well at school, where she has a talent for maths, and is learning English to add to her fluent Yakut and Russian. When she was found, her rescuer said: “She was sitting deep in grass, completely silent. I didn’t actually notice her. She saw me and stretched her arms forward. I picked her up. She was dead scared.” Later Karina said: “It was Naida who rescued me. I was really scared. But when we were going to sleep I hugged her, and together we were warm.”

Both the CoVID-19 and flu are diseases caused by a virus. In the case of flu the pathogens(病原体)are flu viruses, and for COVID-19,it is a novel coronavirus(新型冠状病毒).
Common symptoms for flu and novel coronavirus are nearly identical-fever,cough and tiredness sometimes sore throat and diarrhea. In several cases they result in pneumonia(肺炎)and even death in the worst cases. Flu has seasonal ups and downs. Although it can exist all year round, the virus infects more people in winter and spring. As for the novel coronavirus, the median age for the infected is 51.But the novel coronavirus is a brand new virus no one has total immunity no matter their age.
Both the flu and the novel coronavirus are transmitted in the similar ways,by direct contact with infected patients or small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with virus coughs or breathes.
FIu can be spread by an infected person for several days before their symptoms appear. As for the novel coronavirus, spread might be possible before people show symptoms, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
For the novel coronavirus, there is also a risk for aerosol transmission(气溶胶传播)In health facilities, people may catch the virus if they breathed in aerosol, the suspension of find solid or liquid particles in the air, which have been contaminated by the virus. The novel coronavirus has also been found in patients’ fecal (排泄物) samples, but fecal-oral transmission does not appear to be a major transmission route.

The elder illustrator has just helped to produce what must have been one of the fastest books in history. Coronavirus: A Book for Children was written, illustrated and then published for free online in the space of a week!
Facts are important but the book is also frank about the uncertainty the world faces. There’s a chapter on vaccines (疫苗) which explains that the disease is new and currently has no cure. “Honesty is crucial for children of any age, you have to have their trust,” said Scheffler. The book deals with issues such as not seeing grandparents and coping with annoyed parents who might be trying to work from home themselves at a stressful time. The reaction to the book has been overwhelming.
“I’m not a doctor or a nurse but as an illustrator this was something I could do to help and I feel proud that it has had this amazing response,” said Scheffler.
Like all good children’s stories, the book ends on a positive note. There’s a picture of families, doctors and nurses celebrating together and the caption (说明文字) reads “One day this strange time will be over.” Scheffler said, “Right now, hope is very important for children, because one day this pandemic will indeed be over and then perhaps we can stand close together again as the characters do on the last page of this book.”

Why do children get the same dosage (剂量) as adults?
When children get sick, they are generally given a reduced dosage. Many parents are worried that the same COVID-19 vaccine dosage will be a burden on the small body. So there is need for proper dose in children.
Can children have full immunity (免疫力) after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?
Some parents doubt whether vaccinating children aged 3 to 11 can produce the due immune effect as their immune systems are still developing. Actually, vaccines can work exactly the same in both children and adults. The vaccine will produce a near 100 percent immune response in children.
A vaccine has to go through a strict procedure before being widely used in a specific age group. Enough data need to be collected to get emergency use or come onto the market. So the medical experiments have to be considered in advance. China has carried out a series of such studies. Based on research resnlts, the risk of negative reactions in children is no higher than that of adults.
A.Will the vaccine work on children forever? |
B.Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe for children? |
C.The virus was either carried by a person or with goods. |
D.However, the way the vaccines work differs from that of other drugs. |
E.Some parents find themselves having questions about the vaccination. |
F.This has also been proved true in medical experiments on different age groups. |
G.The COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 3 to 11 has been in progress for some time. |

So, instead, we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do. And always in the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give. Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, “Do it.” My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butter to decide we didn’t have much choice.
That night, I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink, but they won’t do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.
Next, I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each. According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter, he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.
Everything in place, I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal. A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.

Considering that there was no better way, Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it, “Give my dog half a pound of meat.” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently, “Take this to the butcher (肉贩), and he’s going to give you your lunch today.”
Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher’s shop. The butcher read the paper carefully, recognized that it was really the lady’s handwriting and pleasantly did as he was asked to.
At midday, the dog came to the shop again. It gave the butcher a piece of paper again. After reading it, he gave it half a pound of meat once more.
The next day, the dog came again exactly at midday. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at the paper, and gave the dog its meat.
However, the dog came again at four o’clock. And the same thing happened once again. To the butcher’s more surprise, it came for the third time at six o’clock, and brought with it a third piece of paper. The butcher felt a bit puzzled, “This is a small dog. “I don’t sing,” said the man.
But the lady told the waiter, “I’m tired of listening to the piano.” I want the player to sing!” The waiter shouted across the room, “Hey, friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song!” So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!
