If you walked by James Fasulo's bedroom, you might hear the 4-year-old child talking. You could think he was talking with his 4-year-old sister, Anna. But James would probably be talking to his smart speaker(智能音响). It's an Echo Dot. “I use it daily, ” he told reporters.
James often asks his Dot to tell jokes. He also asks it to play music. And his sister?“She asks for songs from Frozen, ” he said.
In December 2017, there were about 67 million smart speakers in homes in the United States. A year later, the number was nearly 119 million. “Families are interested in trying these products, ”says Caroline Knorr of Common Sense Media. But with more kids using smart speakers, privacy(隐私) worries are growing.
Smart speakers are devices such as Google Home and Id Amazon's Echo. Users can use voice to start smart speakers.
Common Sense Media did a survey about smart speakers. They talked to more than 1, 000 parents with kids aged 2 to 8. The results were announced in March. About half of the parents said their kids use smart speakers and half of those kids use them daily.
Some parents reported that they had turned off a smart speaker microphone. Why? About on-third of them said they did it because they didn't trust the device(设备).
“A smart speaker might act like a human in some ways,” says Florian Schaub, a teacher who works at a university. “But a company can collect information about you with the smart speaker. Everything you say to a smart speaker is recorded by these companies.”
“The recordings are used to help companies personalize(使个性化) service and advertisements, ”Schaub says. If users don't like this, he suggests turning off the speaker when it's not in use and setting privacy controls.

Almost all major media outlets have sung high praise for Yu's spirit. People's Daily said: "She died for the peace and happiness of so many families ... The name of Yu and other heroes will be carved not only in stone, but also in the hearts of millions." However, despite being a news hit, a lot of social media platforms still pay much attention to pop stars, no matter their weddings, problematic marriages or just datings. The day Yu died, she did not even make it to the top-10 hot topics on micro blogs.
Some netizens have criticized such people for being too cold to news about heroes who defend our country. They even quoted from the book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, to express their concerns over people being misled by new media while referring to pop stars as "xi zi", a contemptuous(轻蔑的) term used for entertainment stars in the old days.
However, it is unnecessary to shame those netizens who were busy reading about film stars and other celebrities. We live in the age of social and new media, where the celebrities usually draw greater public attention than real heroes. This is partly because the agents(经纪人) of celebrities(名人) are very skilled at using social tools to expand their fan base for commercial gains.
Of course, we should admit the great influence entertainment has on people's minds and it helps the media industry make money. Pop stars do take up a lot of our time, and especially many young people waste their spare energy on them, their new songs, new movies, even rumors about their love life and other scandals. The domestic media industry needs improvement, some entertainment stars should improve their public images, but it is not right to call them "xi zi".
The media may be encouraging people to pay greater attention to celebrities than military heroes, but that does not necessarily mean people pay less respect to heroes than stars. The increasing number of reports about the pilot shows the heroes are worth people's added attention, and they get it.

Researchers tasked 42 adult volunteers with learning the Arabic letters from beginning: Some through writing it out on paper, some through typing it out on a keyboard, and some through watching and responding to video instructions. Those in the handwriting group not only learned the unfamiliar letters more quickly, but they were also better able to apply their new knowledge in other areas—by using the letters to make new words and to recognize words they hadn’t seen before, for example.
The real question is: Are there other benefits to handwriting that have to do with reading and spelling and understanding?
While writing, typing, and visual learning were effective at teaching participants to recognize Arabic letters—learners made very few mistakes after six exercise sessions—on average, the writing group needed fewer sessions to get to a good standard.
Researchers then tested the groups to see how the learning could be generalized. In every follow-up test, using skills they hadn’t been trained on, the writing group performed the best: naming letters, writing letters, spelling words, and reading words.
While 42 people isn’t a huge sample size for a study of this type, the trends reported by the study indicate that pen and paper still have an important role to play in learning, even as digital formats (格式) have come to control our communications. And although adults were used in this particular experiment, the researchers say their findings should have relevance to children too. Several previous studies have also highlighted the advantages of copying as an aid to learning.
Today pupils in schools spend far less time than they used to on handwriting skills and practice, for obvious reasons—but based on what this study shows, it wouldn’t be wise to put away the pens and pencils permanently. Because with writing, you’re getting a stronger representation in your mind that lets you support other types of tasks that don’t in any way involve handwriting.

In a few weeks, White Castle restaurants will test a robot arm that can cook French fries and other foods. The robot, called Flippy, is a product of Miso Robotics, a company based in Pasadena, California.
Robot food service was becoming popular even before the coronavirus pandemic (冠状病毒). Hospitals, college dining areas and other places tried to meet demand for food while keeping labor costs low. Robot chefs appeared at places like Creator, a restaurant in San Francisco. Now, some say, robots may become necessary for the food service industry. “I expect in the next two years you will see much more robotic adoption (采用) in the food space because of COVID-19,” Jain said.
Some people say, robots can lower the demand for labor. At the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, cafe workers used to spend six hours per day making salads, notes Tonya Johnson, the school’s director of nutrition services. But two years ago, the university added a Sally, a kind of robot that now makes around 40 salads per day. By adding Sally, the school was able to cut a job opening in its cooking staff. Johnson said, “I think the pandemic has made us realize how much we need more equipment like Sally.”
Miso Robotics co-founder and chief Buck Jordan said fast food restaurants are already having trouble finding workers, partly as a result of a losing population of young workers. Jordan added that his company’s position is that “automation (自动化) is not a choice”. He added, “You must automate in order to survive in the future.”

Plants that need water or have recently had their branches cut produce up to roughly 35 sounds per hour, the authors found. But well-watered and uncut plants are much quieter, making only about one sound per hour.
The reason why you have probably never heard a thirsty plant make noises is that the sounds are so high-pitched that very few humans could hear them. Some animals, however, probably can. Bats, mice and moths could possibly live in a world filled with the sounds of plants, and previous work by the same team has found that plants respond to sounds made by animals, too.
To overhear plants, Lilach Hadany at Tel-Aviv University in Israel and her colleagues placed tobacco and tomato plants in small boxes provided with microphones. The microphones picked up any noises made by the plants, even if the researchers couldn’t hear them. The noises were particularly obvious for plants that were stressed by a lack of water or recent cutting.
Plants do not have vocal cords (声带) or lungs. Hadany says the current theory for how plants make noises centers on their xylem (木质部) that transport water and nutrients from their roots to their branches and leaves. Water in the xylem is held together by surface tension, just like water moving through a drinking straw. If an air bubble (气泡) forms or breaks in the xylem, it might make a little popping noise; bubble formation is more likely during dry seasons. But the exact system requires further study, Hadany says.
The team produced a machine-learning model to check whether a plant had been cut or was water-stressed from the sounds it made, with about 70% accuracy. This result suggests a possible role for the audio monitoring of plants in farming and gardening.
To test the practicality of this approach, the team tried recording plants in a greenhouse. Pilot studies by the authors suggest that tomato and tobacco plants are not exception. Wheat, corn and wine grapes also make noises when they are thirsty.

This “selftalk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us!Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build selfesteem(自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
1. Why should we not feel embarrassed when talking to ourselves?A.Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health. |

Expert Keith Campbell compares communicating with narcissists to eating chocolate cakes: “When I at chocolate cakes, 20 minutes later I’m under my desk wanting to die. When I eat vegetables, in 20 minutes I feel good. But given the choice I always eat the cake.”
Some narcissists have great confidence in themselves, and also have the emotional intelligence — the ability to read people and to act accordingly — to develop lasting bonds. Having both, such a person could be a presidential candidate. Other people lack attraction, self-confidence and the skill necessary to make friends. These individuals may have no narcissism. But they lack emotional intelligence as well.
Psychologists from the UK and the US conducted a three-month experiment to analyze the attraction of different groups to their friends. Worst off at the end of three months were students who scored low in narcissism and also low in emotional intelligence. Those who scored high on narcissism and low on emotional intelligence had a large initial following, even if their poor social skills slowed the coming in of new friends over three months. During the three months, the popularity of these narcissists matches that of individuals with low narcissism but high emotional intelligence. This somewhat surprised psychologists. Starting from nothing, the emotionally intelligent earn their friends by doing the hard emotional work of friendship, and invest deeply to sustain those friends. Their following grows when friends of friends join their admiration society.
Psychologists conclude that making and keeping friends is a better strategy for long-term popularity. But whether we attract our friends with self-confidence or win their loyalty (忠诚) with caring and sharing, we will get the friends and followings we deserve.
