I was sitting at my desk surrounded by New Year gifts, feeling happy that I had managed to buy some hard — to — find items. These were for Kids Need More, a charitable organization offering services to socially disadvantaged children. One of its most popular events is the Holiday Cheer Bus. The organization always fills the buses with donated gifts for the families on the Cheer Bus routes. Each bus is manned by a team of volunteers. My family had been volunteers for years. I had a list of the families on our route.
Just as I was packing up the items with my husband and my son, I received a call from the director of the organization. She asked if I could add a family to my route— here was a young mother, Leanne, and her son.
I called Leanne and told her that a Holiday Cheer Bus would be visiting her family. Leanne seemed really excited and began to cry. I comforted her, “The Holiday Cheer Bus is really going to come. Is there something special that your child would like?”
“My son is three. All he wants is a pair of Spider-Man snow boots so that he can play outside in the snow. ”
I asked about her son's shoe size. She told me the size and I promised I would have Spider-Man snow boots in size 9 for her son.
After I said goodbye and ended the call, panic set in. It was two days before the Holiday Cheer Bus was going on its run, less than a week before New Year. I was going to need a holiday miracle to find Spider-Man snow boots in size 9.
“We have to go shopping!" I called out to my husband and son. They were surprised but still we set off. We went to a few department stores and the shoe departments, without success. We were tired and hungry. We were becoming disheartened. My son suggested giving Leanne a gift card so she could get the boots herself. But I didn't want to give up. I promised we would bring boots.

With busy life, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, volunteering brings you lots of benefits. The more you volunteer, the more benefits you will gain.Of course, volunteering does not have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy days.Giving in simple ways can not only help those in need but also improve your health all happiness.
One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is that it allows you to connect to your community, boast your social skills and make it a better place.Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the others you choose to help.
Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health.Almost everyone has to fight against stress, anger and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being.Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person.Working with pest and other animal has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety.
Volunteering can also advance your career. If you are considering a new career, volunteering can help you get experience in your area of interest and meet people in the field.Even if you are not planning on changing careers, volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management and organization. You might feel more comfortable stretching your wings at work once you have developed these skills in a volunteer position first.

My first year of high school felt awkward. It felt strange starting over as a freshman. The school was twice as big as my old school, and to make matters worse, my closest friends were sent to a different high school. I felt very isolated.
I missed my old teachers so much that I went back and visit them. They encouraged me to get involved in school activities so that I could meet new people. I understood the psychology in what they were saying, but I took some comfort in it nevertheless.
One Sunday afternoon not long after I had started high school, I was sitting at home at our dining-room table doing homework. It was a cold and windy fall day, and we had a fire going in our fireplace. Suddenly, I smelled something strange, and then I noticed it: smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. The smoke began to fill the room so quickly that we could barely see. Feeling our way to the front door, we all ran out into the front yard. By the time we made our way outside, the whole roof was swallowed up in flames and it was spreading quickly.
... Five hours later, the fire was finally put out by the firemen. Our house was almost completely burned down. Then all at once it hit me — the new school, the fire — I broke down in tears and cried and cried. I was suffering loss, big time.
The next day, Monday, I went to school. The clothes I was wearing looked weird, I had no books or homework, and my backpack was gone.
It always seems that bad news spreads quickly, and in my case, it was no different. Everyone in high school, including the teachers, was aware of my difficult situation. I was embarrassed as if, somehow, I were responsible.

【推荐2】On a freezing morning of December, two police officers were patrolling(巡逻) the streets. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie (对讲机) on Alan, one of the officers, rang. “The cake shop near the City Museum has reported a burglary (窃案). Please rush to the scene immediately”, said the electronic voice.
The two policemen quickly arrived at the shop, only to find that the scene showed no sign of crimes at all. Curiously, they checked the monitor (监控器) and found that a thin woman broke open the window and climbed into the store at 5:20 a.m. Instead of searching around, she walked straight into the storage room, stole cheese, chocolate, butter and other ingredients for a cake, and then ran away down the road.
Both policemen felt quite confused about her behavior. One of the shop assistants identified the thief as Clara, a single mother who lived nearby. She had an eight-year-old boy to take care of and lived in poverty.
Moments later, the two officers arrived at Clara’s house. Bob, the other officer, pulled out a gun and was about to break in. But Alan told him to put the gun away and knocked gently.
The door opened and out came a very thin woman. From the outline of her figure, Alan recognized that she was exactly the thief. The woman, Clara, immediately understood the situation when she saw the two policemen. She buried her face in her hands and sat down on the floor.
At that very moment, a child’s voice broke the silence, “Mom, is anyone coming for my birthday? Invite them in, please.”
After hearing the boy’s words, Clara stood up and begged in a low voice, “Officer, I did steal those things, but there’s nothing else I could do. It’s my baby’s birthday, and I’ve got neither job nor money. Please don’t take those things away. I’ve just used them to make him a cake.”

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I was a volunteer at the beginning of this year. It is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organization, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. ”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few onedollar and fivedollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
